CNN —At least seven people have died after some of the heaviest rain in years hit central and eastern Europe, causing flooding and widespread disruption. The heavy rainfall continued to pummel the region into Sunday. Rescuers have been working hard to rescue hundreds of people left stranded by heavy rainfall there. In neighboring Austria, heavy rainfall has caused water levels to rise in several rivers and rescue services have been called out to parts of the country. Red alerts, the highest level of warning, have been issued for portions of Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia.

Though my husband didn't want kids, he also never pushed me either way, which I'm grateful for. CNN —Pressure is building on President Joe Biden, including from within his own party, to loosen the restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US-provided weapons to strike deep inside Russia. On Tuesday, the bipartisan congressional Ukraine caucus called on Biden to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with the long-range weapons. A group of key House Republican also urged Biden to ease the restrictions in a letter on Monday. On Tuesday, asked if the US will lift the restrictions, Biden answered, “we’re working that out right now.”Two US officials later told CNN that the Biden administration is not anticipating any policy changes when it comes to lifting restrictions. Asked about Trump’s comments, Sybiha, the Ukrainian foreign minister, also downplayed them.

Mohacs, Hungary/Prahovo, Serbia Reuters —The wrecks of explosives-laden Nazi ships sunk in the Danube River during World War II have emerged near Serbia’s river port town of Prahovo, after a drought in July and August that saw the river’s water level drop. The vessels revealed in Prahovo were among hundreds scuttled along the Danube by Nazi Germany’s Black Sea fleet in 1944 as they retreated from advancing Soviet forces, destroying the ships themselves. The wrecks can hamper river traffic during low water levels. During floods, the Danube rises well above 6 meters (19.7 feet). Long-awaited rainfall set in on Monday, which is expected to raise Danube levels to around 3 meters (9.8 feet) at Mohacs by the weekend, with the river likely to submerge the shipwrecks again.

But it was only when Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine , in 2022, that Ammosov began to plot the overthrow of his homeland. As I found in months of wide-ranging interviews, everyone aspiring to a new Russian revolution grasps the seemingly impossible odds of their bid to topple Putin. Ponomarev — who was profiled last year in The Washington Post under the headline "Could this man bring down Putin?" Most applicants live in Russia, Sokolov tells me, but submissions have come from as far away as Uruguay. Northvolt, a key battery producer for Europe's electric vehicle industry, announced Monday that it plans to cut jobs, shut down one of its sites, and enter into discussions with partners and investors to secure the future of a facility in Poland. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Northvolt is one of Europe's most valuable privately-held tech firms that builds lithium-ion batteries for the electric vehicle industry. The battery maker cited a "challenging macroeconomic environment and our subsequent reassessment of Northvolt's near-term priorities" as the key reasons behind its decision to embark on the cost-cutting drive. Northvolt has faced a litany of pressures in recent months — not least the demand challenges facing the broader electric vehicle industry. BMW said at the time that the deal had been cancelled due to Northvolt being unable to deliver on time.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. UkraineA month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Harris was dispatched to NATO’s eastern flank on a reassurance mission – one that also came with some sensitive diplomatic smoothing-over. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. She has vowed to continue to support Ukraine and impose costs on Russia,” an aide to the vice president said.

Modi Arrives in Kyiv as Ukraine Pushes Diplomacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India arrived in Kyiv on Friday, furthering a long diplomatic effort by Ukraine to engage non-Western nations in potential settlement talks in the war with Russia. While many leaders of countries backing Ukraine, including President Biden, have visited Kyiv, Mr. Modi’s trip is the highest-profile wartime visit of a leader of a nation with a neutral stance on the conflict. Ukrainian officials have said that they do not see a mediating role for India, but they portrayed Mr. Modi’s visit as a welcome show of support for their country during the war. The visit is a first by an Indian leader since Ukraine gained independence in 1991. In comments to reporters in Poland before traveling into Ukraine, Mr. Modi said he intended to discuss the war.

British fintech startup Revolut on Friday said it was valued at $45 billion in a secondary share sale with existing and new investors. The $45 billion transaction sharply increases the company's valuation from the $33 billion notched in July 2021. The valuation comes just weeks after Revolut was granted a banking license with restrictions in the U.K., ending a three-year wait after first applying for the license in 2021. The license allows Revolut to take customer deposits and issue products such as loans and credit cards. The company is now set to build up banking infrastructure in the U.K. before the official launch.

BERLIN — German prosecutors have issued a first arrest warrant in their investigation into the undersea explosions in 2022 that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany, according to a media report Wednesday. Swedish and Danish authorities closed their investigations in February, leaving the German prosecutors’ case as the sole probe. The blasts happened as Europe attempted to wean itself off Russian energy sources following the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. They ruptured the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which was Russia’s main natural gas supply route to Germany until Russia cut off supplies at the end of August 2022. They also damaged the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which never entered service because Germany suspended its certification process shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine in February of that year.

CNN —German authorities have issued an international arrest warrant for a Ukrainian man suspected of carrying out the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipeline two years ago. The explosions left gas billowing from Nord Stream 1 and 2 – two major conduits that transported Russian gas to Europe – and prompted a huge operation to find who was responsible. Neither of the pipelines were actively transporting gas to Europe at the time of the leaks, though they still held gas under pressure. During that voyage, the crew is reportedly suspected of diving into the Baltic Sea and attaching explosives to the massive Nord Stream pipelines, which subsequently detonated and damaged both lines, according to the outlets. The Nord Stream project had been controversial long before Russia invaded Ukraine.

The multi-billion dollar Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines transporting gas under the Baltic Sea were ruptured by a series of blasts in September 2022, seven months after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The only certainty about Summer Olympics weather is that there’s really no certainty at all. In other words, holding the Summer Games in these cities would be a huge health risk for the athletes. The Games held in 1996 in Atlanta simply wouldn’t be possible in 2050. They may not againSome of the cities that have already hosted the Summer Games will be way beyond safe temperatures by 2050.
