Dollar winds down after volatile week, China NPC in focus
  + stars: | 2024-11-08 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The dollar further unwound some of its sharp gains from earlier in the week as traders closed out profitable bets on a Trump presidency after his election victory. That helped lift sterling back toward the $1.30 mark, while the yen similarly got some respite and hovered closer to the 153 per dollar level. Sterling last traded $1.2983, recovering from its fall to a roughly three-month low earlier in the week. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar ticked up 0.03% to 104.44, on track to gain just above 0.1% for the week. The Fed may have declared inflation victory too early, Stanley Druckenmiller said. Inflation could could be bottoming right now, the billionaire investor told a Norges Bank podcast. "I'm a little worried that the Fed has declared victory too early," the billionaire investor said about consumer prices on a Norges Bank podcast. When inflation eases, the Fed lowers rates to make sure economic growth keeps up — and has justified its cuts given shifting labor prints. AdvertisementThough the podcast was recorded prior to the president-elect's victory, Druckenmiller cited that Trump's tariff plans are marginally inflationary.

Trump took a dim view of the Powell Fed during his first term in office, calling policymakers "boneheads" and once compared Powell to a golfer who couldn't putt. Powell, who was nominated by Trump in November 2017 and took office the following February, largely shrugged off the criticism then, and he again deflected Thursday. However, dealing with the ramifications of a Trump presidency will be almost unavoidable for the Fed leader. LaVorgna has a unique perspective on the situation, having served as chief economist for the National Economic Council under Trump. Trump historically has favored lower rates, though that too could change if the Fed cuts and inflation rises.

“The notion that your client doesn’t have any knowledge of where his assets are located is farcical," Liman told Giuliani lawyer Ken Caruso. Giuliani told reporters Thursday that "they lied" about items being moved. In court, Caruso told the judge it was "vindictive" of Freeman and Moss to ask for the watch, a claim the judge angrily shot down. “All the property must be turned over to the receiver, and if not I will hold him in contempt,” the judge said of Giuliani. DoubleLine Capital CEO Jeffrey Gundlach said Thursday that interest rates could shoot higher if Republicans end up controlling the House, securing a governing trifecta that gives President-elect Donald Trump free rein to spend as he pleases. "If the House goes to Republicans, there's going to be a lot of debt, there's going to be higher interest rates at the long end, and it'll be interesting to see how the Fed reacts to that," Gundlach said on CNBC's "Closing Bell." The race to control the House is undecided as of Thursday after Republicans clinched their new Senate majority. "So it looks to me that there will be some pressure on interest rates, and particularly at the long end. Still, Gundlach, who had predicted a recession in the U.S., said the Trump presidency makes such an economic downturn less likely.

Trump Media, which is the operator of Truth Social, was viewed as a proxy for Trump's election odds in the past few months. The stock had shot up as much as 60% early Wednesday as Trump was projected to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris. The media company, majority owned by Trump, went public in March via a blank-check merger and now trades under ticker DJT — Trump's initials. And about 99% of voters in a Gallup survey said the economy was at least somewhat important in influencing their vote for the next president. Japan is one stock market outside the U.S. that could win now that Donald Trump is headed back to the White House. Trump has previously proposed tariffs of up to 20% on imports, with a stringent tax of 60% on goods coming from China. Japanese stocks rallied, however, as the yen weakened with some investors expecting the U.S. defense partner stands to gain most from Trump's policies. However, Akutsu warned, with few positive earnings surprises in the market, a year-end rally could be "limited in scope." Takada said investors may have to weigh the near-term benefits of a Trump market against the risks of a possible trade war, even with a rise in the Japanese equity risk premium.

Especially when such a small amount may improve your blood pressure, according to a new study. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 15,000 people who wore activity monitors and had their blood pressure tracked, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal Circulation. As little as five more minutes a day of exercise was associated with lower blood pressure, and just 10 to 20 minutes more as linked to a clinically meaningful change in blood pressure (defined as a reduction of 2mmHg of systolic blood pressure or 1mmHg of diastolic blood pressure), Blodgett said. Even five minutes more of exercise is associated with lower blood pressure, the study said. The answer for better blood pressure may be more than just a walk in the park, however.

New York CNN —Wednesday morning, my inbox was flooded with notes from analysts eager to talk about the election’s upside for various sectors. The crypto folks came on especially strong, cheering the success of the candidate who promised them the moon. When the stock market opened in New York, the enthusiasm for these so-called Trump trades went into hyperdrive. Virtually all mainstream economists oppose tariffs on that scale and expect they would cause inflation to rise yet again. “My worst-case scenario is that he’s actually successful with his blanket tariff policies,” Alpert told me.

Our NFL writers addressed these topics and more in making one prediction for every team heading into the season’s second half. The fourth-year back is on pace to finish with 1,256 yards, which would be the fourth-highest total in team history. Every other NFL team has put a player in at least one of those categories during that stretch — and most teams have checked both boxes. Minnesota has one of the most productive defenses in the NFL and an offense loaded at the skill positions. And the Eagles have managed to win games despite bad luck and bad decisions.

To lower housing costs, Trump has said he would allow homes to be built on federally protected land, something that could help increase the supply of homes in places like Nevada and Arizona. TaxesTrump has proposed a number of tax cuts, including a complete elimination of the federal income tax. Those cuts lowered the corporate tax rate to 21% from 35%, reduced individual income tax rates, and increased the standard deduction. That could create havoc for workers and consumers and reduce the amount of income taxes the federal government brings in. About 40% of Social Security recipients pay federal income taxes, typically because they have other sources of income that raise them above a certain threshold where they are required to pay income tax, according to the Social Security Administration.
