☆ Peru earthquake: Powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off coast

CNN —A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Peru overnight Friday at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGC). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PWTC) issued an alert warning of “possible” tsunami waves reaching up to 1 to 3 meters along some coasts in Peru. “Based on all available data, hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts,” the center said. PWTC said there was no risk of a tsunami for the US West Coast. The quake hit eight kilometers (5 miles) west of Atiquipa, about 600 kilometers (372 miles) south of the capital Lima.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature reports 35% of all shark species are threatened with extinction. The primary reason is overfishing; shark meat and fins are highly sought. That research has helped expand the number of shark species now regulated by CITES. Cardeñosa said when he got started in the field, there were only five or six shark species regulated by the CITES agreement. Brent crude futures edged up in early trade on Thursday as Israeli tanks advanced into Gaza, while U.S. crude futures dipped on the prospect of swelling oil inventories. Brent crude futures for August delivery rose 8 cents to $85.15 a barrel by 0008 GMT. WTI crude, meanwhile, slipped ahead of the U.S. government's oil inventories report, which was delayed by a day due to the national holiday. The Energy Information Administration is due to release last week's oil stocks data at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT) on Thursday. An industry report release on Tuesday showed U.S. crude stocks rose by 2.264 million barrels in the week ended June 14, market sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures, while gasoline inventories fell.

CNN —The Oscars of the food world — the James Beard Awards — were handed out Monday night to many chefs and restaurants reflecting cultures and regions that have long been overlooked when honoring culinary achievement in the United States. Outstanding Chef winner Michael Rafidi dedicated his award to Palestinian people all over the world in his acceptance speech. The 2024 winners bring heritage from all over the globe — the Philippines, Mexico, Japan, Peru, Vietnam, Senegal — to tables across the United States. This year’s awards also bring recognition to restaurants in many smaller towns and states that have not historically been recognized with James Beard Awards. One of Latin America’s most celebrated journalists, whose work has toppled presidents and set off criminal investigations into government wrongdoing, was recovering from an aggressive bout of chemotherapy when he got more bad news: A Peruvian prosecutor was investigating him for bribery. The journalist, Gustavo Gorriti, 76, the top editor at an investigative news media organization in Peru, is no stranger to trouble. In the 1990s, he was kidnapped by members of a secret death squad that Peruvian investigators later determined was headed by former President Alberto Fujimori. Mr. Gorriti had spent years reporting on corruption and human rights violations by the Fujimori’s government. More recently, he helped expose an enormous bribery scandal known as Operation Carwash that has led to the arrest and resignation of government officials across Latin America.
