It is no one's fault except perhaps my father, the geologist, who named his firstborn after a rock. I have run into a couple of Rubys and even Sapphires, but I have never even run into a "Lapis" or "Lapis Lazuli." Now, I introduce myself as Lajward Zahra — no middle name and no family name. It is incredible that when you google "Lajward Zahra," I make up all the top results despite having a relatively low profile. Last year, 12.9% of Europe's LNG went through the Red Sea from suppliers in the Middle East, mainly Qatar. That means “an extended shut-in of the Red Sea route from the Middle East poses a supply risk to Europe,” said Kaushal Ramesh, vice president at Rystad Energy. So far, there's been little to no impact on natural gas prices. Europe is getting a break because demand for natural gas is weak amid a sluggish economy.

U.S. freight costs have soared 64% since mid-November when Houthi militants in Yemen began to target commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea, according to the bank. "The impact from shipping costs alone to inflation is likely very small," Kapteyn said. Iranian state TV cited the country's Oil Minister Javad Owji saying that outside interference was a possible cause after 70% of Iran's gas stations were hit by service disruptions, according to Reuters. "We, Gonjeshke Darande, carried out another cyberattack today, taking out a majority of the gas pumps throughout Iran. Gonjeshke Darande has claimed responsibility for previous cyberattacks on Iran, including on one of the country's major steel companies in June 2022. These cyber-attacks [are] being carried out carefully to protect innocent individuals," Gonjeshke Darande wrote in a Telegram post at the time. As for the Monday hit to Iran's gas stations, the country's civil defense agency said an investigation was underway and that it was still examining all possible causes for the disruption.
