A 22-year-old Brooklyn man was charged with assault as a hate crime after the police said he yelled “Free Palestine” and “Do you want to die?” before stabbing a young man near a synagogue in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn early Saturday morning. The 22-year-old man, Vincent Sumpter, was charged with second-degree assault as a hate crime in the attack, which occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday on Kingston Avenue, around the corner from the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement on Eastern Parkway. Rabbi Behrman said that Mr. Dabrowskin, who is Jewish and about 30 years old, was taken to Maimonides Medical Center and was expected to recover from his wounds. “This is obviously a very serious incident, and there has been a lot of antisemitic rhetoric,” Rabbi Behrman said. “I’m concerned that unless this rhetoric stops, it’s going to become more common, sadly.”

Social media keeps catching Wall Street off guard

In 2015, he created TickerTags, a social media data aggregator that tracks company mentions, and sold it to Jefferies' M Science. To be fair…Speculating and making decisions based on social media trends is a risky wager. Wall Street doesn't always respond to social media trends that could negatively drive fundamentals because there aren't tools to understand the impacts, McKeown noted. In the event a social media trend is mentioned, it's not factored into their valuation model, Ober added. How social media sentiment plays into a thesis should depend on an investor's time horizon.

A German court ruled on Tuesday that a protester who shouted “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” at a rally in Berlin in October had condoned criminal acts — the Hamas-led terrorist attacks on Israel — and gave her a fine of 600 euros, about $650. The slogan, which has radically different interpretations, was later banned in Germany, viewed as basically constituting a call for the elimination of Israel. The court case had been seen as a test of that law. The Israel-Hamas conflict has underlined the delicate balance in Germany between freedom of expression and the country’s relationship with Israel. One of the foundations of Germany since the Holocaust is support for Israel, a principle known as a Staatsräson, or “state reason.” Since Oct. 7, activism in Germany has been roiled by that tension, with cancellations, bans and fierce debates about what can and can’t be said about Israel and the war.

UNESCO's World Heritage Committee named a site in the Gaza Strip — Saint Hilarion Monastery, or Tell Umm Amer — to both its "World Heritage" and "World Heritage In Danger" lists in late July. The decision, made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi, India, reflects the ancient monastery's value and need for protection, according to UNESCO. The Committee inscribed the monastery — one of the oldest sites in the Middle East, according to UNESCO — to both lists using an emergency procedure set forth in the World Heritage Convention. Use of the emergency procedureSimultaneous inscriptions to UNESCO's World Heritage and its "In Danger" lists are rather common, a UNESCO spokesperson told CNBC. Use of UNESCO's emergency procedure fast-tracked Saint Hilarion Monastery/Tell Umm Amer's inclusion onto its World Heritage Lists, a procedure which normally takes at least two years.

Bell has consistently maintained that Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas and said he would be supportive of the U.S. ally if elected. Bush accused Israel of an “ethnic cleansing campaign” as the country retaliated. A group of 30 rabbis from the area endorsed Bell in the spring and accused Bush of antisemitism. Bush confirmed the federal investigation but referred to the complaints as “baseless.”Both Bush and Bell argued that the race is about more than just the Middle East. On Friday, Rep. Nine staff members who worked for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees may have been involved in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, according to a now-completed investigation conducted by The Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS). Since then, Israel declared war on Hamas and has killed over 40,000 people in Gaza, according to officials there. A total of 19 UNRWA staff members in Gaza were investigated by the OIOS for allegedly being involved in the attack, Lazzarini said. In one case, no evidence was found to support that the staff member in question was involved in the attack on Israel, according to Lazzarini. In nine cases, the evidence obtained was "insufficient to support the staff members' involvement," according to the news release.

The investigation was launched in January after Israel accused some UNRWA employees of participating in the attack that left 1,200 people in Israel dead. “The evidence obtained by OIOS indicated that the UNRWA staff members may have been involved in the armed attacks of 7 October 2023,” OIOS said in a statement. Nonetheless, UNWRA in January said that it had terminated the accused employees’ contracts. They also reviewed UNRWA employees’ communications and media reports. “Because of safety concerns,” they did not meet with the accused UNRWA staff or corroborating witnesses.

The first national Muslim organization that had declared itself "uncommitted" on President Joe Biden's re-election bid is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris' candidacy. “She has shown more sympathy towards the people of Gaza then both President Biden and former President Donald Trump,” Suswell said of Harris. The group’s endorsement is significant given the backlash the Biden administration has faced from the Muslim community over its handling of the war. “It wasn’t an easy meeting for the president,” Suswell said. Iran says Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran

Hamas said Haniyeh was killed "in a Zionist airstrike on his residence in Tehran after he participated in the inauguration of Iran's new president." Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said early Wednesday, and Hamas blamed Israel for the attack. Hamas officials did not immediately respond to requests for further comment. In April, an Israeli airstrike in Gaza killed three of Haniyeh's sons and four of his grandchildren. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian's swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, along with other Hamas officials and officials from Hezbollah and allied groups.

Three prominent lawyers, among them the consumer safety activist and four-time presidential candidate Ralph Nader, sent a letter on Tuesday to a leader of the Wall Street law firm Sullivan & Cromwell to condemn the firm’s policy of scrutinizing job applicants’ participation in protests over Israel’s war in Gaza. The letter, addressed to Joseph C. Shenker, one of the firm’s two senior chairs, was the most prominent criticism of Sullivan & Cromwell’s policy yet from within the legal field. It was also signed by Bruce Fein, a Justice Department official under President Ronald Reagan, and Lou Fisher, a constitutional scholar who worked for 40 years at the Library of Congress. Sullivan & Cromwell said in May that it would use a background-check company to review job applicants’ involvement with pro-Palestinian student groups and in antiwar protests for statements and slogans it deemed to be “triggering” to Jews, including the ubiquitous protest slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”Under the policy, applicants risk being disqualified for a job at the firm even if they weren’t using problematic language themselves but were involved with a protest where others did.

Up until now, Harris has been defined by working for President Joe Biden, arguably the most explicitly pro-Israel American president, even though his relationship with Benjamin Netanyahu has frayed. “President Biden brought to the White House a lifelong relationship with Bibi Netanyahu and a very mature history on the US-Israel relationship,” Murphy said. “The vice president has been a strong and longstanding supporter of Israel as a secure, democratic homeland for the Jewish people. “One can criticize specific policies of the government of Israel while still strongly supporting the state of Israel and the people of Israel. It’s the latest example of how Democrats remain divided over Israel’s handling of its war with Hamas. Approximately 80 House Democrats and at least six Democratic senators are expected to skip Netanyahu’s speech on Wednesday, according to sources and public statements reviewed by CNN.
