But any grain will work as long as you modify the cooking time accordingly. White rice will be ready in 15 to 20 minutes, while brown rice or barley can take as long as an hour. And lingering near the pot has the added benefit of enveloping you in a fragrant cloud of aromatics and spices. To give the soup its robust, unforgettable flavor, I added some baharat to the pot along with the tomato paste, letting everything toast and caramelize. Other spice mixes would work similar magic, each adding character to the soup.

Shimane, Japan CNN —In Japan, gardening isn’t just a hobby – it’s an art form with spiritual significance. The US-based Sukiya Living magazine (formerly Journal of Japanese Gardening) has awarded the Adachi Museum its highest honor – most beautiful traditional garden – for more than 20 years running. Despite accolades coming from outside of Japan, the museum and gardens remain relatively unknown compared to those in Kyoto and Tokyo. Many Western visitors to Japan are confused when they visit a Japanese garden, only to not see a single flower. “Before looking at Japanese paintings, you can look at these Japanese gardens and understand them in this sequence.

There's a safer way to log in to apps and websites that removes the need to use passwords. The move toward passkeys comes as our digital privacy gets harder to protect, particularly as people need to remember more and more passwords. A recent Pew Research survey showed that almost 70% of Americans are stressed about the number of passwords they need to remember. Bottom line: Passkeys are better than passwords at protecting your personal information. I created the passkeys using my iPhone, but you can do it from a computer or Android phone by following similar steps.

REUTERS/Fabian Bimmer/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - China is upping the critical minerals stakes by curbing exports of graphite, a key raw material in electric vehicle batteries. There is much potential for further escalation in this unfolding critical minerals battle between China and the West. Previous restrictions on lower-grade graphite exports destined for the steel and lubricants sectors have been rescinded. The world's graphite supply chain could well be in for a similar short-term shock. Western governments are still evaluating their response, waiting like the rest of us to see how China's graphite volumes play out in the coming months.

China's decision may escalate trade disputes globally and spur other countries to prioritize research into alternative sources and materials, industry executives said. "We see China's move as a potential catalyst to highlight the urgency of improving (U.S.) graphite supply," said John DeMaio, president of Graphex Group's (6128.HK) graphene division. It has graphite supply deals with Syrah Resources (SYR.AX) and is looking for other sources, DeMaio said. Synthetic graphite could account for nearly two-thirds of the EV battery anode market by 2025, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence estimates. Chief Operating Officer Hans Erik Vatne told Reuters recently that developing synthetic graphite production is costly, but that is the price to pay to reduce reliance on China.

PARIS (AP) — The “Mona Lisa” has given up another secret. The oil-paint recipe that Leonardo used as his base layer to prepare the panel of poplar wood appears to have been different for the “Mona Lisa," with its own distinctive chemical signature, the team of scientists and art historians in France and Britain discovered. Gonzalez has studied the chemical compositions of dozens of works by Leonardo, Rembrandt and other artists. Is ancient Roman concrete better than today's? Most modern concrete starts with Portland cement, a powder made by heating limestone and clay to super-high temperatures and grinding them up. The ancient builders mixed materials like burnt limestone and volcanic sand with water and gravel, creating chemical reactions to bind everything together. Now, scientists think they’ve found a key reason why some Roman concrete has held up structures for thousands of years: The ancient material has an unusual power to repair itself. Even though Roman concrete lasted a long time, it couldn't hold up heavy loads: “You couldn’t build a modern skyscraper with Roman concrete,” Oleson said.

According to Selvaraj's research, in humid areas of India, builders used local herbs that help structures deal with moisture. Applying to jobs can feel like a numbers game, and there's no shortage of hacks to try and get your resume into the hands of a hiring manager. But one so-called tip that's gone viral on TikTok several times over may not be so foolproof. The hack, known as "white fonting," is "bad advice," says Farah Sharghi, a recruiter who estimates she's conducted more than 10,000 interviews at companies like Google, Lyft and TikTok. The idea stems from standard advice to tailor your resume using keywords in the job description. "It drives me nuts," Sharghi says of the trick, "and there's always a resurgence every year on TikTok where somebody makes a video about it, and it gets millions of views and people do it."
