CNN —A group of people carrying Nazi flags demonstrated outside a community theater performance of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in Livingston County, Michigan, in a display of antisemitism. Several masked men showed up waving Nazi flags and reportedly shouted antisemitic and racist slurs outside the American Legion Post 141 in Howell on Saturday during the play, according to CNN affiliate WXYZ. “The Diary of Anne Frank” was published posthumously and has been translated into more than 70 languages in more than 60 nations, with several film and stage adaptations. After we published our research, the story of driving rats went viral in the media. The tale of rat tailsIt wasn’t just the effects of anticipation on rat behavior that caught our attention. While it’s vital to study negative emotions such as fear and stress, positive experiences also shape the brain in significant ways. As animals – human or otherwise – navigate the unpredictability of life, anticipating positive experiences helps drive a persistence to keep searching for life’s rewards. That’s a lesson my lab rats have taught me well.

My bank has lowered the APY on my high-yield savings account by almost half a percent recently. AdvertisementIt's never pleasant to receive an email from your bank informing you that the interest rate on your high-yield savings account is decreasing. From August until the end of October, the annual percentage yield (APY) on my high-yield savings account has fallen from 4.6% to 4.2%. After paying off my bills every month, I would put the remainder of my paycheck into my high-yield savings account and watch the number creep up. Is there anything I can do about the state of my savings account, or do I have to watch my yield erode away slowly?

Pitchfork announced that its annual Chicago music festival would not return in 2025. In an announcement on social media and on its website, the music publication said it made the decision after assessing the rapidly evolving "music festival landscape." “For 19 years, Pitchfork Music Festival has been a celebration of music, art, and community—a space where memories were made, voices were amplified, and the shared love of music brought us all together." Pitchfork Music Festival was founded in 2006 by the publication's founder Ryan Schreiber, ex-Pitchfork staffer Chris Kaskie and festival producer Mike Reed. It is unclear if the music festival will move forward in the other cities, but Pitchfork said in its statement that it "will continue to produce events in 2025 and beyond."

By the weekend, tens of thousands of students had joined this self-proclaimed "night riding army," seeking not just breakfast, but also a way to travel and socialize without spending much money. They rented shared bikes and cycled in groups through the night from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng. My American family of five, two adults and three kids, lives in an apartment in Germany. AdvertisementOur family of five, two adults and three children, lives in an apartment in Germany. Apartment life is the norm where we live — most of our friends who have kids also live in apartments. However, since, by default, apartment life makes you more minimalist in terms of anything from furniture to toys, this certainly was helpful in regards to having far fewer boxes to pack. Apartment life is something that I feel contributes to our sense of community.

Pompeii is limiting its daily visitor numbers

CNN —Authorities at Pompeii in southern Italy are introducing a daily limit of 20,000 visitors as part of efforts to protect the ancient site. The measure, which will come into force from November 15, will see the introduction of personalized tickets bearing the name of each visitor, according to a statement from the Pompeii archaeological park published Friday. Pompeii has received an increasing number of visitors in recent years. The site has long been a popular tourist attraction, but the sheer weight of numbers has caused increasing problems at the site as visitor numbers rose from under 2.7 million in 2014 to more than 3.9 million by 2019. “Grande Pompei,” as the project is called, is a “parco diffuso” or scattered archaeological park, incorporating the archaeological area of Pompeii itself, as well as villas at nearby Boscoreale, Oplontis (in the modern town of Torre Annunziata) and Stabiae, at modern Castellammare di Stabia.

CNN —Dangerous wildfires are burning on the East and West coasts Monday, with firefighters in New York and New Jersey working to contain a deadly blaze spurred by an ongoing, historic drought – while strong winds in Southern California could fan a destructive fire in Ventura County. Nearly 600 wildfires have burned nearly 7,000 acres in New Jersey and New York since October 1, according to officials. Most of the fires were in New Jersey, where the state’s Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 wildfires. “We were fortunate that the fire started at 9 o’clock in the morning, with daylight,” said Jim Fryhoff, the sheriff of Ventura County. Agricultural officials assessing the impact on farmland planted with avocados, citrus, and berries have estimated the damage at $2.4 million, the Ventura County Star reported.

Manufactured housing, sometimes called mobile homes, are homes made in a factory rather than constructed on site, and they have been surging in popularity this year amid America’s housing crisis. Instead, they’re turning to the internet for lower-cost options, whether a pop-up foldable house kit, a tiny home or a traditional mobile home. Amazon is not the first major retailer to sell manufactured homes. More than 100 years ago, American retailer Sears, Roebuck and Co began selling kit homes from its catalog, with some for under $1,000. A 2023 Urban Institute paper argued that mobile homes were “uniquely vulnerable” to natural disasters compared to other housing.
