“We’re expecting this holiday period to be very consistent with that,” he said. Retailers, including Walmart, are contending with a mixed bag of factors this holiday season. The holiday season is also shorter this year and parts of the U.S. have had unseasonably warm weather, two dynamics that could hurt retailers. That would be lower than the 3.9% year-over-year jump from the 2022 to 2023 holiday season, when spending totaled $955.6 billion. Rainey said the holiday period is “off to a pretty good start.”He said items like TVs, Apple AirPods, Beats headphones and even tires have been selling.

WASHINGTON — The administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Deanne Criswell, is set to face questions from House lawmakers on Tuesday about the federal government's response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton that caused catastrophic damage in the Southeast. “And FEMA leadership didn’t take action against this supervisor until the press exposed this discrimination," his remarks say. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed a lawsuit against Criswell and Washington last week over the incident. More than 220 people died from Hurricane Helene in late September, which hit Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. At least 17 people died during Hurricane Milton, which hit Florida hard in early October.

Vacant federal office space in downtown Washington is costly to maintain and a deep source of frustration to Mayor Muriel Bowser. She told reporters last week that she had requested a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump and that top on her agenda is pushing federal workers to return to downtown Washington. All told, the U.S. has roughly 2.2 million federal workers. With fewer people in the office, the cost of excess federal office space has become a concern. In 2004, a little over 750,000 federal workers were eligible to work from home.

The family of a 30-year-old Hawaii resident is searching for her in Los Angeles after she missed a connecting flight, sent unusual text messages and then went silent, the relatives said. The next day, she sent concerning text messages to loved ones, family members said. The three were part of a larger group of family members and loved ones who gathered in Los Angeles in recent days to launch a search effort. Family members said they couldn't speak about it in detail because they don't want to hinder investigators. Options on BlackRock's popular iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) began trading on the Nasdaq Tuesday, ushering in a new way to trade and speculate on the price of bitcoin. IBIT traded 73,000 options contracts in the first 60 mins of trading Tuesday, Nasdaq told CNBC, placing the fund in the top 20 of the most active nonindex options. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday said the charts suggest that fears about President-elect Donald Trump's intentions to implement major tariffs on imports won't affect the market just yet, and the impact of any actual tariffs will be lessened if the market remains bullish. Cramer examined analysis by Jessica Inskip, director of investor research at StockBrokers.com. "The charts ... suggest that tariffs had little impact on the market until they actually materialized during Trump's first term — all the saber-rattling beforehand didn't do much damage," he said. "Even when the tariffs actually hit and the market sold off, we eventually erased those losses the moment that the Fed stopped raising interest rates. But the broader market reacted when Trump actually imposed them, balking at the idea that he had ignited a global trade war, Cramer added.

CNN —Ukraine has fired US-made ATACMS missiles into Russia’s Bryansk region, Russia’s Defense Ministry said, in a major escalation on the 1,000th day of war. The attack comes just two days after the Biden administration gave Kyiv the green light to use the longer-range American weapons against targets inside Russia. The attack marks the first time Ukraine has used the longer-range American weapons to strike targets deep inside Russia, and show that Kyiv has wasted little time in making use of its newly-granted powers. ET) Tuesday, Ukraine fired six ballistic missiles at a facility in Bryansk, the ministry said. On Sunday, US President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use longer-range American missiles inside Russia, ending a months-long prohibition aiming to help Ukraine defend itself while not drastically escalating the conflict.

AdvertisementGoogle pays Apple at least $20 billion a year to make its search engine the default on iPhones. Those payments were at the heart of a federal antitrust case Google lost earlier this year. That's because a long-running deal between Apple and Google, where Google pays Apple at least $20 billion a year to make Google the default search engine on iPhones, is at the heart of the US government's antitrust case against Google. (Though, confusingly, an earlier Bloomberg report about the DOJ's plan focused on forcing Google to sell off its Chrome browser and never mentioned the Apple payments.) Yet, some experts say they are seeing a renewal of so-called animal spirits. "Animal spirits" is a term first coined by economist John Maynard Keynes and refers to the tendency for human emotion to drive investment gains and losses. watch nowSome experts say animal spirits are a sign of consumer confidence. "It's essentially why dead investors outperform living investors, because dead investors are not impacted by their animal spirits," Klontz said. Research has shown dead investors' portfolios tend to outperform, since they are left untouched because they are less likely to be influenced by emotional decisions, such as panic selling or buying.
