CNN —The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that after reviewing Boeing’s instructions for inspecting grounded 737 Max 9 planes, it has decided to seek more information before allowing the plan to proceed. One hundred and seventy-one of the planes remain grounded in the United States as airlines Alaska and United await updated emergency inspection guidance from the FAA. The FAA said it plans to collect data from the inspection of 40 of the planes using Boeing’s procedures before deciding whether the process will work for the rest of the grounded planes. It’s unclear whether the 40 planes will come from the Alaska Airlines fleet or the United Airlines fleet – the two airlines that fly this model of aircraft – or both. The agency’s latest move comes as the FAA also plans to audit the Boeing 737 Max 9 production line and its suppliers, with a focus on ensuring quality control.

Speaking to supporters in Iowa, Trump said he was against the regional trade deal being negotiated by the Biden administration with 13 other countries, arguing that it would hollow out U.S. manufacturing and trigger job losses. Trump, who withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal that had been forged with many of the same countries after taking office in January 2017, said he would "knock out" what he referred to as "TPP Two" immediately upon taking office. The Biden administration had hoped to finish key chapters of its IPEF trade initiative in time for this week's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. It has vowed to continue negotiating the ambitious deal, but election-year pressures and resistance to tough commitments from some countries make a deal unlikely, trade experts and business groups say. Singtel has said that while Optus experienced an outage after its software upgrade, the upgrade itself was not the cause. "Singtel will support Optus as it learns from what has occurred and continues to improve," the Singapore company said a day earlier. Kanagaratnam told the hearing Optus never expected a total shutdown because it had filters designed to stop all 90 of the company's routers from being overloaded with data. "The outage was a result of our defence not working as it should have," he said. Bayer Rosmarin said 228 calls to Australian emergency hotline Triple-0 failed to connect because of the outage, but the telco had followed up all incidents and "thankfully everybody is OK".

In sentencing Azari in federal court in Manhattan, U.S. District Judge John Koeltl said the hacking had a "devastating impact" on its victims. "Your Honor, I made a mistake," Azari said in court through a Hebrew interpreter before the sentence was handed down. Prosecutors did not allege any link between Azari and Exxon, which denied any connection to Azari or his hacking campaign. Three victims who spoke in court, including two climate activists, said they still wanted to learn his clients' identities.
