Shirley Chisholm, a former New York congresswoman, became the first Black woman to seek the office in 1972. “I’m ready for a female president, I just don’t think that most of America is yet, and I don’t know why,” she said. Asian American support for Donald Trump was 5 points higher this election cycle than in 2020, marking a slight shift to the right. The NBC News Exit Poll of early and Election Day voters indicated that 54% of Asian American voters chose Harris, while 39% voted for Trump. Harris lost seven points compared to Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) support for Biden in 2020. “The pendulum has started to swing back.”Ramakrishan pointed out that previous polling showed that the economy was a major priority for the Asian American electorate. Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin defeated GOP former Rep. Mike Rogers in the race for Michigan’s open Senate seat, NBC News projects, a key hold in one of the most contested battleground states. Slotkin beat Rogers amid intense presidential campaigning between President-elect Donald Trump, who carried Michigan, and Vice President Kamala Harris, who ran behind Slotkin. Slotkin will replace Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a fellow Democrat first elected to the seat in 2000 who is retiring this year. Slotkin held the seat in two subsequent close elections before she ran for the Senate this election cycle. He was previously a critic of Trump but came around as he ran for the Senate and received Trump’s endorsement in March.

LGBT voters shifted even more solidly into the Democratic camp this year, according to the NBC News Exit Poll. Harris led President-elect Trump 86% to 12% among LGBT voters, the poll found. As in previous elections, LGBT voters stood out as one of the most left-leaning voter blocs in the electorate. Among LGBT voters, Democrats vastly outnumber Republicans, 56% to 5%, and liberals surpass conservatives, 61% to 5%. LGBT voters are staunchly pro-choice: 59% say abortion should be legal in all cases, a much higher level of support for abortion rights than among non-LGBTs, at 31%.

Former President Donald Trump has defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in Wisconsin, NBC News projects, denying Democrats a vital segment of their “blue wall” of Northern states to claim victory in the presidential race. Polling in the lead-up to Election Day had showed Harris and Trump locked in a tight race within the margin of error in Wisconsin, similar to other battleground states. Harris and Trump campaigned feverishly for months in Wisconsin, regularly crisscrossing the state and advertising heavily. She was joined by former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., whose father was Republican President George W. Bush’s vice president. Trump's two Wisconsin wins are the only ones for Republicans at the presidential level since 1984.

That included a striking shift of Latino voters into the GOP column compared with 2020 — they backed Trump by 13 points more. Women broke for Harris, 54%-44%, while men favored Trump, 54%-44% — a gap in support amounting to 22 percentage points.
