☆ Monte Kiffin: Longtime NFL and college coach dies at 84

CNN —Longtime NFL and college coach Monte Kiffin has died at the age of 84, the University of Mississippi announced on Thursday. Kiffin passed away peacefully in Oxford, Mississippi, surrounded by friends and family, the school said. The Buccaneers-owning Glazer family said Monte was a “beloved and iconic member” of the organization. “As a coach, Monte was a true innovator who got the best out of his players and helped create one of the signature defenses of the early 2000s,” the Glazer family said in a statement. Lane has been the head coach of Ole Miss since 2020 where Monte has been an analyst on the staff.

☆ OpenAI is reportedly nearing AI systems that can reason. Here's why that could be a cause for concern.

The scale ranked AI systems by levels of intelligence, from chatbots at level one, to AI systems that could do the work of entire organizations at level five. Execs reportedly told staffers they believed OpenAI was at level one, defined as AI with conversational language skills, but was nearing level two, identified as "reasoners" with human-level problem-solving. Burden added developing AI systems to this level runs the risk of the machines "reasoning past us," something that could have consequences for the workforce. An OpenAI representative told Bloomberg the scale also included "Agent" and "Innovator" levels, which classified AI systems by their ability to take action and aid in invention. "We've got AI systems that appear to do a tiny bit of reasoning, but it's not clear if it's just a mirage."

Cars that run on hydrogen emit zero carbon at the tailpipe, but 96% of the world’s hydrogen is still derived from fossil fuels like methane gas. That makes most hydrogen-powered cars much more polluting than battery electric vehicles, or EVs, and only marginally cleaner than traditional combustion engine cars. Toyota is supplying the Game’s official fleet, which includes 500 Mirai cars and 10 coaches that run on hydrogen, as well as 1,150 EVs, to ferry athletes around. It is also one a few major automakers betting on hydrogen-powered vehicles, as well. Hydrogen vehicles have so far failed to take off as a popular choice for consumers, and very little infrastructure to refuel with hydrogen exists.
