Does he choose to be a heat shield for members who quietly want to buck Trump without doing so publicly? The answers will set the tone for a long-awaited new era facing the Senate GOP. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.McConnell is the ultimate free agent as he relinquishes the job of Senate Republican leader after a record 18 years.

Abortion providers, meanwhile, got an influx of funding that enabled them to set up new clinics and extend hours in states where abortion is still legal. Abortion pills are a target for anti-abortion activists, who hope the incoming administration might revoke provisions that allow the medications to be prescribed via telehealth and mailed nationwide. In 1999, Gomperts founded an organization that transported women from places with restrictions to a ship in international waters to obtain abortions. In 2016, the agency enabled mifepristone — one of the two pills used in medication abortions — to be used up to 10 weeks’ gestation instead of seven. By last year, medication abortions accounted for 63% of abortions nationwide, up from 53% in 2020, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

So, we need to find a way out,” TNLA spokesperson Lway Yay Oo said. The other two groups in the alliance, the Arakan Army and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The rebel alliance had previously reached a ceasefire in January with Myanmar’s military during China-mediated talks, but the deal collapsed in June and fighting resumed. Myanmar’s parallel administration, the National Unity Government, said Beijing must consider the desires of Myanmar’s people when getting involved in the country’s crisis.

MANILA, the Philippines — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed Monday to fight back against what he called reckless and troubling threats against him, speaking out after his estranged vice president said he would be assassinated if she herself were killed. “If planning the assassination of the president is that easy, how much more for ordinary citizens?” he said. Sara Duterte told reporters she had yet to hear the president’s statement but she recalled the 1983 assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino, for which she blamed the Marcos family, without giving proof. “The whole nation fought back when their family killed Benigno Aquino Jr.,” Duterte told reporters. Rodrigo Duterte told the hearings that he was solely responsible for the bloody crackdown and has urged the ICC to “hurry up” with its investigation.

Millions of Americans with obesity would be eligible to have popular weight-loss drugs like Wegovy or Ozempic covered by Medicare or Medicaid under a new rule the Biden administration proposed Tuesday morning. Some people may already get coverage of the drugs through Medicare or Medicaid if they have diabetes or are at risk for stroke or heart disease. Becerra estimated that an additional 3.5 million people on Medicare and 4 million on Medicaid could qualify for coverage of the drugs. But research suggests far more people might qualify, with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimating roughly 28 million people on Medicaid are considered obese. In speeches and on social media, he's said the U.S. should not cover the drugs through Medicaid or Medicare.

On page 273 of her memoir, Angela Merkel admits she made a mistake. In a 2003 guest essay for The Washington Post, she attacked him for criticizing the impending American invasion of Iraq: “Schröder doesn’t speak for all Germans,” the headline ran. Strangely, the mistake Ms. Merkel acknowledges is not her support for the Iraq war, even though she now thinks the invasion was wrong. After three years away, Ms. Merkel is stepping back onto the world stage. But she isn’t ready to say “sorry.”

For more than a year, the Israeli government has avoided holding itself to account for its failure to prevent the deadliest event in Israel’s history: the Hamas-led raid on Oct. 7, 2023. An independent commission, founded by survivors of the raid and relatives of Israelis who were killed and kidnapped, tried to fill that void on Tuesday, releasing a scathing report that blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and top military commanders for years of faulty decisions that made Israel more vulnerable to invasion. Based on three months of interviews and public hearings, the commission’s 90-page report criticized the government’s decision to funnel money to Hamas, which allowed the group to entrench itself in the Gaza Strip in the decade before the attack. The commission, formally known as the Civil Commission of Inquiry of the Oct. 7 Disaster, condemned Mr. Netanyahu for sidelining high-level decision-making forums that might have stirred greater internal debate about the wisdom of such a policy.

AdvertisementDuring his first term, Trump threatened tariffs while renegotiating trade with Mexico and Canada. Scott Bessent, Trump's pick for Treasury secretary, has called tariffs a "negotiating tool." In June of 2019, Trump threatened tariffs against Mexico if the country didn't alter its immigration system, which it eventually did. While financial analysts are taking Trump's threats seriously, some banking leaders seem to think that Trump's most recent tariff threat is a continuation of his prior negotiation tactic.
