NEW YORK, May 30 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Nvidia (NVDA.O) has made a boisterous entry to the $1 trillion club, but it might not remain there for long. While Nvidia has been around for ages – it was founded in 1993, making it older than Amazon and Alphabet – its valuation growth of late has been prodigious. Its trip from $500 billion to $1 trillion has taken about 500 days, which is about one-third what it took Apple. Unlike Apple or Google-owner Alphabet, the brand has little consumer cachet to fall back upon. Alphabet, Amazon.com, Apple, and Microsoft are the four other United States-based companies worth over $1 trillion, according to Refinitiv data.

London CNN —WPP, the world’s largest advertising agency, has teamed up with chipmaker Nvidia to create ads using generative artificial intelligence. This new technology will transform the way that brands create content for commercial use,” WPP CEO Mark Read said in a statement. The platform will enable WPP (WPP)’s creative teams to integrate content from organizations such as Adobe and Getty Images with generative AI to produce advertising campaigns “more efficiently and at scale,” according to WPP (WPP). In the demo screened by Huang, WPP had created realistic footage of a car driving through a desert. “It’s much easier to identify the jobs that AI will disrupt than it is to identify the jobs that AI will create,” Read told the Financial Times Monday.

Nvidia’s H100 data-center processor got a shout-out at a Google conference last week. Photo: GoogleGoogle’s ambitious plans for generative artificial intelligence announced last week were great news for one chip maker. During a two-hour long presentation at its I/O developers conference on Wednesday, Google took pains to point out its use of Nvidia ’s H100, a high-end data center processor that the chip maker began shipping only earlier this year. No other chip makers or data-center component suppliers got such a shout-out. Again, no other chip maker was mentioned.

Generative AI and large language models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT require massive amounts of computing power to run, and typically rely on chips like Nvidia’s graphics-processing units, or GPUs, that are specialized for these types of calculations. Graphcore sells primarily to AI startups looking to build and train models at lower cost, he said, and the company is benefiting from the proliferation of those startups. Shane Rau, who leads International Data Corp.’s semiconductor research, said chip startups are increasingly pivoting to focus their products on supporting large language models. Still, he added, “you’re going to see a combination of real adaptation and marketing.”“There will be the pressure to say: ‘Hey, we’re already relevant, our AI chip technology’s already relevant to generative AI’,” said Mr. Rau. Some chip makers say they expect yet another surge in demand once businesses more widely adopt generative AI.
The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index (.SOX) is up about 16% so far this year, dwarfing the 3% year-to-date gain for the S&P 500 (.SPX) and the Nasdaq Composite’s (.IXIC) 8.5% rise. With semiconductors a key component in countless products, some investors are betting economic strength could help the shares outperform. "If that’s the case, then I think semiconductors can do very well.”Of course, economic strength has been a double-edged sword for stocks lately. Semiconductor shares have pulled back recently along with broader markets on worries of a "no landing" economic scenario in which strong growth keeps inflation elevated and prompts the Fed to raise interest rates higher for longer. And if tighter Fed policy eventually brings on a recession in the second half of the year, as some fear, semis could suffer.

Shares of Nvidia, led by CEO Jensen Huang, rose 42% since the first of the year through Wednesday. Given all the talk about Nvidia ’s opportunity in ChatGPT’s world, the chip maker is at least highly motivated to show that it isn’t just hot air. Nvidia’s stock price soared 42% since the first of the year through Wednesday—the best performance on the PHLX Semiconductor Index, which was up by a mere 14%. And that was ahead of the company’s fiscal fourth-quarter results, which were widely expected to reflect the same weakness in PC and data center spending that has hit rivals Intel and Advanced Micro Devices .
Lucid Motors — The electric vehicle maker saw shares slide 14% premarket after reporting that fourth-quarter revenue fell short of expectations. eBay — The online auction platform fell 5% despite posting fourth-quarter earnings and revenue that topped analysts' estimates as gauged by Refinitiv. The company also forecast current quarter revenue of $600 million and $640 million, compared to estimates of $622 million. Bath & Body Works — Shares fell more than 4% after the company reported fourth-quarter earnings. Sunrun — The solar company rose 1.5% after its fourth-quarter earnings topped Wall Street's expectations.
Last quarter, Nvidia said tech giant Microsoft was deploying “tens of thousands” of its GPUs in its cloud unit Azure to train and use AI. Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT runs entirely on Nvidia chips, Piper Sandler analyst Harsh Kumar said. Revenue from the data center business was $3.62 billion for the fourth quarter, slightly below analyst estimates of $3.84 billion. Gaming chip sales were $1.83 billion, beating analyst estimates of $1.52 billion, according to Refinitiv data. CNN —Microsoft announced it has agreed to partnerships with Nvidia and Nintendo as it tries to convince European Union officials to approve its $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard — the company behind the popular game franchise Call of Duty. Microsoft President Brad Smith had a closed-door meeting Tuesday with EU regulators and competitors in Brussels to address concerns that its acquisition of Activision Blizzard could hurt competition in the video game industry. The deal has also come under scrutiny from regulators in the United States and the United Kingdom. Microsoft (MSFT) said that it has entered into a 10-year partnership with Nvidia to bring Xbox PC games to Nvidia’s cloud gaming service. In a statement, the software giant said the partnership “resolves Nvidia’s concerns with Activision Blizzard.

OAKLAND, Calif, Nov 16, (Reuters) - U.S. chip designer and computing firm Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) on Wednesday said it is teaming up with Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) to build a “massive” computer to handle intense artificial intelligence computing work in the cloud. The AI computer will operate on Microsoft’s Azure cloud, using tens of thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia’s most powerful H100 and its A100 chips. “We're seeing a broad groundswell of AI adoption ... and the need for applying AI for enterprise use cases.”In addition to selling Microsoft the chips, Nvidia said it will partner with the software and cloud giant to develop AI models. Buck said Nvidia would also be a customer of Microsoft’s AI cloud computer and develop AI applications on it to offer services to customers. This is important as heavy AI computing work requires thousands of chips to work together across several servers.
Nvidia’s new chip is a response to the Biden administration’s new rules restricting exports of American chip technology to China. HONG KONG— Nvidia Corp. has begun offering an alternative to a high-end chip hit with U.S. export restrictions to customers in China, after the new rules threatened to cost the American company hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue. Nvidia said the new graphics-processing chip, branded the A800, meets U.S. restrictions on chips that can be exported to China under new rules rolled out last month. The chip went into production in the third quarter, the company said.
OAKLAND, Calif., Oct 18 (Reuters) - Oracle Corp (ORCL.N) and Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) on Tuesday announced they are expanding their partnership and adding tens of thousands of Nvidia’s chips to boost artificial intelligence- related computational work in Oracle’s cloud. The expanded partnership comes as more companies use AI and the AI models become more complex, requiring a ramp-up in data center infrastructure investments. Chips that help accelerate computing speed include GPUs and are heavily used in AI work where Nvidia has the lion's share. While there are many AI chip startups challenging Nvidia, Clay Magouyrk, who is in charge of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, said he does not see much of an opening for the newcomers. Manuvir Das, who is in charge of enterprise computing at Nvidia, said the Oracle partnership includes increased cooperation to make the AI software run more efficiently on Oracle Cloud and to provide more support to Oracle’s customers.
