Nvidia is replacing rival chipmaker Intel in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, a shakeup to the blue-chip index that reflects the boom in artificial intelligence and a major shift in the semiconductor industry. Intel shares were down 1% in extended trading on Friday. Nvidia shares rose 1%. Nvidia's market cap has swelled to $3.3 trillion, second only to Apple among publicly traded companies. Intel shares have fallen by more than half this year as the company struggles with manufacturing challenges and new competition for its central processors.

Mark Zuckerberg says Meta's Llama 4 AI models are training on the biggest GPU cluster in the industry. During Meta's earnings call, he said the cluster is "bigger than 100,000 H100s." A lot of computing power is going into training Meta's forthcoming Llama 4 AI models — more than anything currently offered by the competition, according to Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg added in the earnings call Wednesday that Meta's Llama 4 models will have "new modalities, capabilities, stronger reasoning" and be "much faster." Meanwhile, Musk tweeted earlier this week that xAI will soon double its cluster size in the coming months to 200,000 H100 and H200 chips.

Amazon's AI services are rapidly growing, with significant demand for AWS's AI chips. AdvertisementJust when you thought Big Tech executives couldn't get more bullish on AI, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy upped the ante on Thursday. Amazon has launched a number of new AI services in recent years, including Bedrock, an AI development tool, the Rufus shopping agent, and homegrown AI chips called Inferentia and Trainium. Amazon's AI business is "growing three times faster at its stage of evolution than AWS did itself," he added. AdvertisementCustomers are realizing that AI model training and inference "could get costly" and AWS's AI chips can be "very compelling" in terms of its price, the CEO explained.

AMD aims to close the gap with Nvidia, which holds 80% of the GPU market. AMD still has a large gap with Nvidia, as it lags behind in GPUs or graphics processing units. Su responded that AMD's road map "actually closed a good part of that gap" with Nvidia's products and that AMD holds an advantage in data center retrofitting. Advertisement"As much as we still believe NVDA will be hard to shake from its 80-85% AI share, AMD still has done an enviable job from virtually zero to ~5% market share," Arya wrote in a note released on Wednesday. Even if this share remains unchanged, the underlying AI growth will still provide AMD "the chance to participate," he added.

Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of Meta Platforms Inc., arrives for the Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California, US, on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024. Meta is slated to report third-quarter earnings on Wednesday after the close of regular trading. Meta's results come a day after digital ad companies Alphabet , Reddit and Snap all reported solid quarterly earnings. Microsoft reports after the bell on Wednesday, and the big week for tech earnings wraps up on Thursday, when Apple and Amazon report quarterly financials. If Meta hits analysts' expectations for third-quarter revenue, that would represent 18% year-over-year growth, down from 23% a year ago.

AMD's GPU sales are nearing CPU sales, driven by AI data center demand. AMD raised its 2024 GPU sales forecast to over $5 billion, up from $4.5 billion. AdvertisementWhat could also keep this dynamic from becoming permanent is the immaturity of the ecosystem around AMD GPUs. UBS analysts warned that 2025 may be yet another transition year in which AI data centers and GPU sales don't reach maturity — predicting higher GPU sales in 2026 than in 2025. The analysts expect $5 billion in GPU sales this year to reach around $8 billion next year.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., arrives for the Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California, on Sept. 25, 2024. Meta has been so quick to build out its massive data center and computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence projects that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is even a bit surprised. In a call with analysts on Wednesday after Meta's third-quarter earnings report, Zuckerberg explained to investors how Meta's rising costs for the year are tied to the speed at which employees are able to get data centers, servers and chips for AI up and running. Meta raised the low end of its capital expenditures guidance for 2024 to $38 billion from $37 billion. "That execution makes me somewhat more optimistic that we're going to be able to keep on building this out at a good pace."

Major equipment suppliers in Europe say that U.S. chip designers are calling on them to lower their water temperatures to accommodate the hotter AI chips, according to Herbert Radlinger, managing director at NDC-GARBE. Energy efficiency is high on the European Commission's agenda, as it seeks to reach its goal of reducing energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030. The EU predicted in 2018 that energy consumption of data centers could rise 28% by 2030, but the advent of AI is expected to boost that number two or threefold in some countries. Many of the recent discussions have focused on different ways to source "prime power" for AI data centers and for the potential for more collaboration with utilities, said Steven Carlini, chief advocate of AI and data centers and vice president at Schneider Electric. Liquid cooling will require a "reconfiguration," Gunen explained, adding that new data centers are already coming ready with this technology.

How I turned ChatGPT into my tour guide in Italy
  + stars: | 2024-10-26 | by ( Salvador Rodriguez | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Traveling through Italy, I used ChatGPT as a tour guide for the moments where my mom and I wandered into interesting little corners, alleys and buildings where our curiosity was piqued with no tour guide around. As I stood with my mom under the blistering sun in Rome waiting for our audio tour of the Pantheon to begin, I decided to kill some time with ChatGPT. "Pretend you're a tour guide and tell that to me in a more interesting fashion," I wrote. But my favorite ChatGPT use case so far has been as a tour guide in Italy. Elsewhere on our trip, ChatGPT told us that the central figure of the Trevi Fountain was Neptune riding a chariot pulled by sea horses, and explained why Rome's Stadio Olimpico still maintained a monument for Benito Mussolini.
