CNN —What you eat and don’t eat can reduce your risk of medical conditions such as heart disease and cancer and increase life expectancy, according to decades of research. Studies have linked highly processed meat with negative health outcomes, so once again look for minimally processed whole foods. I’d also urge them to cut out ultraprocessed foods, which includes junk food like chips and candies. This is not easy to do because of the sheer amount of sugar-sweetened beverages and ultra-processed food around us. If so, you may end up consuming primarily ultra-processed food, including fast food.

CNN —Two men were charged with murder and other felony charges for their roles in the mass shooting after a Kansas City Chiefs championship rally last week, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Tuesday. Lyndell Mays, of Raytown, and Dominic M. Miller, of Kansas City, were both charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action, the prosecutor’s office said. Though they were both charged with murder, Miller’s firearm was the one that fatally wounded Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two and local DJ and radio host. The incident was at least the 48th mass shooting in the United States in 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which like CNN counts those in which four or more are shot, not including a perpetrator. Police initially said Wednesday they detained three people after the shooting, but one was later “determined to not be involved.”

Start-up companies around the world are competing to develop technologies for producing chicken, beef, salmon and other options without the need to raise and slaughter animals. Now, a measure in Florida that would ban sales of laboratory-grown meat has gained widespread attention beyond state borders. The bill, which is advancing through the Florida Legislature, would make the sale or manufacture of lab-grown meat a misdemeanor with a fine of $1,000. It’s one of a half-dozen similar measures in Arizona, Tennessee, West Virginia and elsewhere. Opponents of lab-grown meat include beef and poultry associations worried that laboratory-made hamburgers or chicken nuggets could cut into their business.
