President Biden and I have something in common: We were born on Nov. 20, 1942 — he in Scranton, Pa., I in Providence, R.I. He and I once even joked about it, long before anyone could suggest we were too old for our jobs. The White House physician says it’s the result of “wear and tear” on his spine. The president and I share other health issues common for folks our age. (Thank goodness for Medicare for me, the White House Physician’s office for him.

What’s in Store for the 2024 Hurricane Season?
  + stars: | 2024-07-10 | by ( Christopher Kuo | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When Hurricane Beryl intensified into a Category 5 storm last week, it broke records and left a trail of damage across the Caribbean. The first named hurricane of the season, Beryl is the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, and also the first Category 4 hurricane to form in the Atlantic in the month of June — a portent of what experts say is a hurricane season that will be much more intense than usual. Hurricane season usually runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, with most storms developing between mid-August and mid-October. If you’re planning to travel during this hurricane season, here’s what you should know. How bad will hurricane season be this year?

The combination of recent Supreme Court rulings on presidential power with the Democratic Party’s nomination crisis in the wake of Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance has significantly improved Donald Trump’s prospects — not only his odds of once again becoming president, but also of enacting a sweeping authoritarian agenda. Trump’s debt to the six-member conservative majority on the Supreme Court is twofold. First, their delay. By waiting until the last day of the court’s term to issue their decision on Trump’s immunity claims, the justices effectively prevented prosecution of federal criminal charges against him before the election. “By shielding Donald Trump from standing trial before a jury in two of his felony cases,” Michael Podhorzer, a former political director of the AFL-CIO, writes in a post on his Substack, Tipping the Scales, “Trump’s three appointments to the Supreme Court, along with the even more MAGA Justices Alito and Thomas and Judge Aileen Cannon, have already irreparably interfered in the 2024 election.”Second, the substance of the July 1 ruling in Trump v. United States has convinced Trump and his allies that they will face few legal obstacles if they pursue a radical reconstruction of government — a “second American Revolution,” in the words of one loyalist — if Trump regains the White House on Nov. 5.

In this gilded echo chamber, Mr. Trump enjoys unwavering devotion — and collects the staggering price of admission. During the 2014-15 season — the last before Mr. Trump officially entered politics — The Times counted 52 fund-raiser events at Mar-a-Lago. More than two dozen midterm candidates had already held fund-raisers on the property when Mr. Trump made that statement. But that changed when Letitia James, the New York attorney general, sued Mr. Trump for exaggerating the value of his properties. And, unlike when Mr. Trump was president, “he was there a lot,” Mr. Rustmann said.

Here are a handful of them:1) CampaignsBy the time a presidential election takes place in the United States, the electorate will have already endured months of seemingly endless electioneering — with the entire election campaign process from candidacies and the campaign trail to the actual presidential election and inauguration taking up to two years. In the U.K., the time frame between a prime minister calling a general election to the actual vote is just six weeks. It sounds simple, and usually is, unless there's a "hung parliament" in which no political party wins a majority of seats. In the U.K., political advertising on TV and radio is not allowed, so U.K. voters are subjected to the somewhat quaint "party political broadcasts" during election campaigns. 6) 'Absurd' diversionsBritish political experts note that, unlike in the U.S., where broad political debates tend to remain the key focus, U.K. election campaigns can see more minor or fringe issues dominate the short election campaign.

Before the refinancing, Peloton would have needed to pay around $800 million toward its debt by November 2025. Now that it has refinanced, Peloton has eased investor concerns about liquidity and has the breathing room it needs to try to turn around its business. Peloton faces risks aheadWhile the refinance may have bought Peloton some time, it's far from a panacea. Under the terms, Peloton will now be spending about $133 million annually in interest, up from around $89 million previously. Trump immunity ruling hands big decisions to Judge Tanya Chutkan
  + stars: | 2024-07-01 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
A general view of the U.S. Supreme Court as justices issue rulings in pending cases on the final day of the court's term in Washington, U.S., July 1, 2024. The U.S. Supreme Court's presidential immunity ruling on Monday sends the federal case accusing Donald Trump of attempting to overturn his 2020 defeat back to Judge Tanya Chutkan for critical decisions that will shape the future of the historic prosecution. Chutkan, a judge on the U.S. District Court in Washington, will have to decide whether a pair of Supreme Court rulings requires some of the allegations against the Republican presidential candidate be tossed out. Chutkan, born in Jamaica and nominated as a judge by former Democratic President Barack Obama, was assigned to oversee the Trump case in August 2023. She has had little to do for more than six months as Trump's bid for presidential immunity stalled any activity until the Supreme Court ruled.

Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Ketanji Brown Jackson and Elena Kagan laid out grim visions of U.S. democracy in their joint written dissents to the court's Monday decision on former President Donald Trump's claim of presidential immunity from criminal prosecution. "In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law," Sotomayor wrote. It's more of a warning," LaCroix told CNBC in an interview about the three dissents, written by the only three justices nominated to the court by Democratic presidents. The immediate effect was to send special counsel Jack Smith's criminal election fraud case against Trump back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan. She will have to rule on whether the criminal charges pertain to official acts Trump carried out as president, granting him immunity, or his private conduct.

Stephen K. Bannon, the longtime adviser to former President Donald J. Trump, has reported for a four-month sentence in federal prison on Monday after hosting the two final hours of his podcast from just outside the low-security facility in Danbury, Conn.“We’ll be as close to the prison as we can possibly get,” said Mr. Bannon in a high-spirited interview over the weekend. And when the taping, which he cast as an unsubtle troll pointed at the Justice Department, is concluded, “I’ll walk across the street and surrender.”He surrendered shortly after noon Eastern time. As a result, the very public figure will remain out of view — and off the air — until just a few days before the Nov. 5 election. But the right wing firebrand insists that swapping his studio mic for a prison job, and his trademark double-collared shirts for government khakis, will have little impact on his influential “War Room” podcast. In fact, he claims, it will “only get bigger and more powerful” while he’s in custody.

With Macron and Biden Vulnerable, So Is Europe
  + stars: | 2024-06-29 | by ( Roger Cohen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
This month, President Biden, flanked by President Emmanuel Macron of France, stood on the Normandy bluffs to commemorate the young men who clambered ashore 80 years ago into a hail of Nazi gunfire because “they knew beyond any doubt there are things worth fighting and dying for.”Among those things, Mr. Biden said, were freedom, democracy, America and the world, “then, now and always.” It was a moving moment as Mr. Macron spoke of the “bond of blood” between France and America, but just a few weeks later, the ability of either leader to hold the line in defense of their values appears more fragile. The United States and France — pillars of the NATO alliance, of the defense of Ukraine’s freedom against Russia and of the postwar construction of a united Europe — face nationalist forces that could undo those international commitments and pitch the world into uncharted territory. A wobbly, wavering debate performance by Mr. Biden, in which he struggled to counter the dishonest bluster of former President Donald J. Trump, has spread panic among Democrats and raised doubts about whether he should even be on the ticket for the Nov. 5 election.

Amazon will double the value of credits it offers some startups to use its cloud infrastructure, CNBC has learned, as the company faces heightened competition from Microsoft in artificial intelligence services. Seed-stage startups will still be eligible for $100,000 in credits, AWS said. But Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are growing more quickly, and are benefiting from rapidly advancing AI models. During Selipsky's time at the helm, Microsoft and Google increased their share of the cloud infrastructure market. Participants will be able to access up to $1 million in cloud credits, according to the website.

U.S. President Joe Biden attends the first presidential debate hosted by CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., June 27, 2024. Schumer was worried before the debate that Biden and Trump were in statistical tie nationally, despite the Republican challenger's conviction in his New York criminal hush money trial. "We've got to get out the vote for Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and a Democratic Senate and House!" "Vice President Harris is a risky choice, but certainly has the visibility and is the logical choice," said Bose.
