Arteta preparing Arsenal players for Anfield 'jungle'
  + stars: | 2023-04-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
April 8 (Reuters) - Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is preparing his players to take their Premier League title charge to the Anfield "jungle" as they look to end a marathon winless run at the home of Liverpool. Arsenal have not won at Anfield in the Premier League since their 2-0 victory in the 2012-13 season - a game in which Arteta himself played for the north London club. "You cannot train the players in the zoo and then go to the jungle on Sunday," Arteta told reporters on Friday. You have to prepare the players. Arteta said his side are enthusiastic ahead of Sunday's clash with Liverpool as Arsenal look to maintain their eight-point lead over Manchester City in the title race.
The tight conditions have helped to push British food price inflation to levels not seen for almost 50 years. Industry data from market researcher Kantar on Tuesday showed UK grocery price inflation hit a record 17.5% in the four weeks to March 19, underscoring the problem for policymakers. Many UK food retailers are buying less, knowing their customers cannot afford to spend so much, taking a hit to their profits in the process. Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, which represents the major food retailers, said supermarkets were confident about the resilience of food supply chains, particularly with the approaching UK growing season. The grower who spoke to Reuters, and who asked not to be named, said there was too much focus on food inflation and not enough on the strength of the whole system.
Tottenham end unhappy relationship with Conte

LONDON, March 26 (Reuters) - Antonio Conte's increasingly fractious relationship with Tottenham Hotspur came to an end with the Premier League club announcing they had parted ways with the Italian on Sunday. "We can announce that head coach Antonio Conte has left the club by mutual agreement," Tottenham said in a statement. "We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio's first season at the club. "We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place," chairman Daniel Levy said in the statement. Conte leaves with Tottenham in fourth place in the Premier League and still well-placed to challenge for a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League.

City's 2-0 win sliced Arsenal's advantage to two points and when leaders Arsenal trailed 2-0 with an hour gone in north London it appeared their hold on top spot was weakening. Fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur's top-four ambitions suffered a dent as they went down 1-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers who are gradually pulling clear of the relegation zone. Arsenal had not won a Premier League game in which they had trailed by at least two goals since 2012 so the omens looked bad for the Gunners as they were stunned by Bournemouth. 'TRICKY GAME'There was no such drama at Manchester City with Phil Foden scoring an early beauty before substitute Bernardo Silva wrapped up the points in the second half. "We won the game, we didn't suffer much at the end -- an incredible result for us because it was a tricky game," City manager Pep Guardiola said.
And to make City's title defence all the more difficult, rivals Manchester United are not going away either. In 2018-19 and 2020-21, 15 game winning streaks in each season, which began mid-campaign, helped steer City onto league title glory. It was a big effort to play less than 72 hours ago after the (City) game that we had, and after the result that we had which obviously morally was touching." However, as Liverpool have disappointed and sit eighth in the standings, United have joined Arsenal in enjoying a turnaround in fortunes much quicker than anyone expected. United finished with their lowest-ever Premier League points tally last term, with a disjointed squad looking a long way from title contenders.
Feb 15 (Reuters) - Iranian-American billionaire Jahm Najafi, chair of MSP Sports Capital, is set to launch a $3.75 billion takeover bid for Premier League soccer club Tottenham Hotspur, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday. Najafi is also a minority shareholder in the National Basketball Association team Phoenix Suns. Tottenham, currently managed by Antonio Conte, have 39 points after 23 games in the league this season and sit two points outside the top four. Other Premier League clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool are also seeking investment, with Qatari investors preparing to make a bid to buy United while Jim Ratcliffe's company INEOS formally entered the bidding process last month. Central London's City of Westminster is its political heart, while the City of London is where the capital's financial decisions happen. But be warned: Several paths across Hyde Park are pedestrian-only, and police often fine people who cycle on them. The City of London is a blend of old and new, with St Paul's Cathedral close to skyscrapers as well as Roman ruins. While north London has Hampstead Heath, south of the river is Richmond Park, which dwarfs its northern counterpart in size. There's also a branch in central London's Covent Garden — the flower-filled restaurant The Petersham — that has an sit-down deli and bar.
Arteta questions officials for allowing Brentford equaliser
  + stars: | 2023-02-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta questioned a decision by match officials, saying Ivan Toney's equaliser for Brentford in their 1-1 Premier League draw on Saturday should have been ruled out for offside. "I just looked back and it is offside, yes," Arteta told a news conference. "You have to apply certain principles in defending and you do that by sticking to the rules. There was also a suggestion that Norgaard was offside before he made the assist but that did not appear to be proven. Asked about the equaliser, Brentford manager Thomas Frank said: "I agree that when they kick the ball Ethan is in an offside position.
Haaland can improve by watching Kane, says Guardiola
  + stars: | 2023-02-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Feb 5 (Reuters) - Manchester City striker Erling Haaland can improve by watching and learning from his Tottenham Hotspur counterpart Harry Kane, manager Pep Guardiola said before the Premier League champions travel to the north London club on Sunday. But Guardiola said Haaland can develop his all-round game by studying players like Kane, who became Tottenham's joint all-time record goalscorer on Jan. 23. "With Erling, one of the attributes that surprised me the most is how he is aware he can improve in many departments," Guardiola said. "And I'm pretty sure maybe watching Harry Kane, but not necessarily Harry, other players too, he has the will to think, 'I can do better.' "Harry Kane remains one of the best strikers I have ever seen in my life," Guardiola added.

Kane's 15th-minute effort punished some sloppy City passing and made him the north London club's all-time top goalscorer with 267, taking him past former great Jimmy Greaves whose record had stood since 1970. Tottenham then withstood a late City siege with some tenacious defending to clinch a third win in four league games over Pep Guardiola's side. Tottenham, whose manager Antonio Conte was absent after having surgery to remove his gallbladder, are fifth on 39 points from 22 games, one behind Newcastle United. "Sooner or later it is going to change, but it is strange we haven't scored one goal," Guardiola said of City's troubles with Tottenham.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and manager Mikel Arteta celebrate a 2-0 win against rival Tottenham, solidifying the young team’s surprising place at the top of the Premier League with the season nearly half over. LONDON—For nearly a decade, Arsenal made its annual trip across North London to the home of rival Tottenham Hotspur and returned without a victory. So when the streak ended on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win for Arsenal at the Tottenham Stadium, the result could have stood as a milestone on its own. But as the players celebrated in front of the small contingent of traveling fans, they understood that they had claimed something far more surprising. By the time Arsenal left its hated rival’s home, it was a genuine contender in the Premier League title race.
Classy Arsenal outgun Spurs to extend lead at the top

LONDON, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Leaders Arsenal put on a masterclass to overwhelm shell-shocked north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 away and extend the gap at the top of the Premier League to eight points on Sunday. The Gunners flew out of the blocks from the opening whistle and built a first-half lead through a clumsy own goal by Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris and a sublime strike from Martin Odegaard. Tottenham were totally outplayed by a fired-up Arsenal side under Mikel Arteta who were determined to make amends for a loss at Spurs last season that ultimately cost them a top-four place. Striker Harry Kane, needing one more goal to equal Jimmy Greaves all-time Spurs' scoring record, had chances either side of the break but keeper Aaron Ramsdale was equal to them. The win puts Arsenal on 47 points from 18 games ahead of Manchester City on 39, with Newcastle United, who have played a game more, and Manchester United a further point back.

REUTERS/Henry NichollsLONDON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - A seven-year-old girl was left with life-threatening injuries after she and five others, including another child, were hurt in a drive-by shooting on Saturday near a church in London where a funeral was taking place, British police said. Detectives said the girl had been taken to hospital and remained in a life-threatening condition after the shooting not far from Euston train station in north London. A 12-year-old girl was also among those injured and had been taken to hospital with a minor leg injury but later discharged. "The incident took place in the vicinity of a church where a funeral was taking place," a police statement said.
LONDON, Jan 13 (Reuters) - British actress Marisa Abela will portray Amy Winehouse in a biopic about the late singer, with filming due to begin in London on Monday, production and distribution company Studiocanal has said. The six-time Grammy Award winner died from alcohol poisoning at her north London home on July 23, 2011. Winehouse, who struggled with drink and drug problems through much of her career, was 27 years old. Considered one of the most talented singers of her generation, Winehouse's untimely death shook the music world. "We are thrilled that Studiocanal, Focus Features and Monumental are making this movie celebrating our daughter Amy’s extraordinary music legacy and showcasing her talent in the way that it deserves," The Amy Winehouse Estate said on Friday.
"(City's) Kevin De Bruyne sees it, Odegaard sees it. But I don't think any other player in the Premier League sees it open up." Having initially signed the midfielder on loan from Real Madrid, the 35 million euros ($37.46 million) Arsenal paid to make his move permanent now looks a steal. Odegaard's transformation has drawn parallels with former club captain Cesc Fabregas, who was tasked with leading the side at the tender age of 21 by ex-manager Arsene Wenger. "He has represented the values of this football club, the team... in the best possible way," Arteta said.

Fury was popping in the jabs freely in the second round, with Chisora unsteady on his legs in the third when both fighters tumbled accidentally to the canvas. "Total dominance," said former WBA champion David Haye, commentating ringside for BT Sport after six rounds of pummelling. "Where's Oleksandr Usyk, the rabbit?," Fury roared at the crowd. "I needed some rounds," said Fury, whose last fight was a sixth-round stoppage of compatriot Dillian Whyte at Wembley in April. Chisora thanked the referee for taking matters into his own hands.

The men’s team sits atop the English Premier League, with a manager full of ideas and a fearless new generation breaking through into the first team. Arteta’s Arsenal now leads Manchester City in the Premier League – a team that is touted for greatness – and shows very little signs of slowing down. He took his shirt off, swore at the Arsenal fans and stormed down the tunnel in what looked to be his last act as a player for the club. The realistic expectation, then, is not necessarily to win the Premier League title but to cement itself back in the Champions League. The Premier League will pause for over a month as many of Arsenal’s players will travel to the Gulf nation to join their respective teams.
Singer Adele is setting the record straight on how to pronounce her name. At a recent Q&A event in Los Angeles, the singer debuted her new music video, “I Drink Wine” and chatted with her fans. One British fan submitted a question via video and before answering, Adele was shocked at the perfect pronunciation of her name. The London-based fan who nailed the pronunciation had asked about the singer’s “journey to self-love while writing ‘30’” — her most recent album. I’d go to the studio and stuff like that...I felt very very safe and in safe hands within my private life,” she said.
"I have a feeling that we lost two points, especially with the way we started the game and the chances we had," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. Newcastle have already drawn with Manchester City and Manchester United this season and their only loss was a stoppage-time defeat by Liverpool. Sunday's win at Tottenham sent the clearest message yet that they can challenge for a Champions League berth. Harry Kane pulled one back for third-placed Tottenham in the 54th minute with his 10th goal of the season but Newcastle comfortably held on for the points. "Real pride in the players today and great to be part of those scenes," Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who took over last year with the club heading towards relegation, told reporters.
