New York CNN —Elon Musk on Friday named longtime media executive Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of Twitter, months after he promised to step back from the role. “I am excited to welcome Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of Twitter!” Musk wrote in a tweet on Friday. NBCUniversal’s ad sales team has generated $100 billion in ad sales since she joined in 2011, according to her profile, and forged partnerships with many new media companies including Twitter as well as Apple News, Buzzfeed, Snapchat and YouTube. Ad sales represented more than 90% of the company’s revenue before Musk purchased it in October. Musk has previously spoken about improving ad sales by focusing more on the relevance of its ads.
Tucker Carlson remains influential in conservative media despite being fired from Fox News in April. Sources close to Carlson told Axios that the political commentator is looking to get out of his contract with the network. As a result, they say, his team is "preparing for war" with Fox News, Axios reports. Rival outlets — including right-wing Rumble and Newsmax — have reached out offering to pay Carlson more than his Fox contract, Axios reported. Now, sources say Carlson's right-wing allies are rallying around him in the aftermath of the abrupt firing.
Networks and streaming services need to get ready for a media rights smackdown. UFC should also benefit ahead of 2025, when its U.S. media rights deals come up, including with Disney's ESPN. "I think everything is up for grabs with these media rights deals. During his time with CAA, he had formed a relationship with McMahon during a recent round of TV rights negotiations for WWE. It will also work for UFC negotiations, he noted.
Police make requests for social media user data to aid prosecution after a crime has been committed. ProPublica found similar web trackers that capture user data on the sites of at least nine online pharmacies that offer abortion pills by mail, including Abortion Ease, BestAbortionPill.com, PrivacyPillRX, PillsOnlineRX, Secure Abortion Pills, AbortionRx, Generic Abortion Pills, Abortion Privacy, and Online Abortion Pill Rx. Private content by users — such as location data or messages — requires law enforcement to obtain a warrant before it can be turned over. She said because the platforms themselves are unlikely to prioritize user privacy, the burden to do so falls on the individual user. "All the angst directed social media services for being a pawn in law enforcement's game seems misdirected to me.
As fast-food chains spread across the US after World War II, new roadside restaurant brands needed to stand out. So restaurant chains turned to architecture as a key tool to promote their brand and help create their corporate identity. Luke Sharrett/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesBut the fast-food architecture of today has lost its quirky charm and distinctive features. Googie style fell out of fashion in the 1970s as fast-food style favored dark colors, brick and mansard roofs. But in the effort to modernize, some say fast-food design has became homogenized and lost its creative purpose.
Former President Trump claims he owns the audio rights to interviews conducted by Bob Woodward. But legal experts say it's unlikely a court will agree with Trump, who claims he's owed $50 million. "The case centers on Mr. Woodward's systematic usurpation, manipulation, and exploitation of audio of [former] President Trump," states the complaint, filed with a federal court in Florida. The audiobook didn't go on sale for another two years — after, Woodward says, he decided its release served the public interest. "Filing a lawsuit over publishing those interviews turns the First Amendment on its head."

In new media appearances, Sam Bankman-Fried openly mused about his culpability in FTX's crash. Bankman-Fried told Sorkin at one point that "I didn't knowingly commingle funds," between FTX and his other company, the hedge fund Alameda Research. "Like, I wasn't spending any time or effort trying to manage risk on FTX," he told the "Good Morning America" anchor. Greg Joseph and Stanford Law professor David Mills, who Semafor reported last month represent Bankman-Fried, didn't respond to Insider's email for comment Thursday evening. Representatives for FTX did not respond to a request for comment, and Bankman-Fried did not respond to a Twitter DM seeking comment.

The Rumble video platform logo on a laptop computer arranged in Hastings on Hudson, New York, on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021. Trump Media and Technology Group executives named Parler and Rumble as theoretical acquisitions or partners, according to documents provided by co-founder and whistleblower, William Wilkerson, through his counsel. Wilkerson was one of the early executives at Trump Media and its Twitter-esque social media platform Truth Social. DWAC and Trump Media are also the subject of a criminal probe into possible securities violations relating to conversations that occurred between the two parties prior to the merger announcement. While the photo names these possible acquisition targets, it also names a number of other ventures for Trump Media that have yet to come to fruition, including "Trump Faith/Classic Films," "Trump Book Publishing" and "Trump Documentaries."

The involvement of the previously unnamed financial backers of Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) – parent company of social media app Truth Social – shows how Trump tapped his political supporters to launch an outlet aimed at political conservatives and libertarians after he was banned from Twitter and Facebook following the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on Congress. TMTG launched Truth Social in February in the Apple App Store and in Google’s Play Store in October. Truth Social has been downloaded 2.9 million times across both platforms, according to market tracker Appfigures. The team generated $765 million in revenue and $206 million operating income during the 2021-2022 season, both the most in NBA history. A series of hot-button lawsuits have linked all those unlikely creators and platforms in litigation that goes as high as the US Supreme Court. The litigation deals with issues of intellectual property, copyright infringement and fair use in a rapidly changing new-media landscape. She won, but not much: $3,750, because the court ruled that, though her copyright had been violated, her tattoos didn’t impact game profits. It was a huge hit on TikTok, in part because the duo invited feedback and participation, making it a crowd-sourced artwork. But when the creators took their show on the road and sold tickets, Netflix sued.
On TikTok, the hashtag “Gaylor” has more than 264 million views; the term refers to Swift fans who subscribe to the theory that she is queer. Fans have gone down these rabbit holes before, speculating over other hints across Swift’s songs, music videos and social media posts. Previous Easter eggs discovered by fans include the album title for “Lover” hidden in the background of the music video for “Me!” ahead of the album title’s announcement. “I think a lot of people have to deal with this now ... because we live in the era of social media,” Swift said. In a 2019 interview with Vogue, she addressed why she made her support for the LGBTQ community more visible.
Under the law, which took effect this week, companies must share with authorities users' information if they post content constituting crimes, including misleading information. Social media companies are required to appoint Turkish representatives. The law has mainly been criticised for imposing jailtime on social media users and journalists spreading "disinformation", but it also builds on legislation imposed on social media companies in 2020, with much tougher measures. "I think (the law) is like a wish list - they put whatever they can think of in there," Akdeniz said. "There is an attempt to regulate social media platforms that could be a model law for authoritarian regimes."
In one line of attack, Lula allies dug up a 2016 interview in which Bolsonaro said he was willing to eat human flesh in an unspecified indigenous ritual. In another, they circulated old images of Bolsonaro speaking at Masonic lodges, considered pagan temples by some of his evangelical Christian allies. The president won court injunctions that took that attack ad off the air and kept the subject out of a debate with Lula last Sunday. But every week that passes without Bolsonaro gaining ground is a battle won by Lula, who was Brazil's president from 2003 to 2010. "The focus now is to attack Lula and trigger fears of him returning to power," said a second Bolsonaro campaign source.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is at risk of defeat in next year’s election, partly due to the struggling economy. ISTANBUL—Turkey’s parliament passed a law criminalizing the spread of alleged disinformation and forcing social-media platforms such as WhatsApp to hand over users’ personal information, raising alarm among free-speech advocates. Turkish journalists and media watchdogs say the legislation, passed late Thursday, will have a chilling effect on speech in the run up to Turkey’s national election scheduled for next year. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is at risk of defeat in the election partly due to Turkey’s struggling economy.

The metaverse – a growing number of immersive virtual online worlds where users live and play – has become a hotbed of real estate speculation. Look beyond the numbers, however, and you’ll find whole professions being shaken up, from architects and designers to developers and real estate agents. But could real estate in the metaverse ever become as reliable an investment as bricks and mortar? “It’s hard to know if the real estate inside (metaverses) is going to be stable … Least of all us, and we’re deeply in it,” said Yorio. “It’s very possible that real estate in the metaverse is a stable investment in the future,” said Robson, of analytics company WetMeta, in an email.
But I was deeply moved Monday by the TV image of Queen Elizabeth’s coffin being lowered into its vault at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor with the queen’s bagpiper playing her to rest. The queen and TV came of age together. Now, I wonder if her funeral will be one of the media events that historian use to mark the end of the TV era. But watching them on iPhone did not do justice to the majestic and panoramic imagery being offered on TV screens. Of all the anchors and analysts, CNN’s anchor Anderson Cooper seemed the most plugged into the rhythms of the day’s events.
On social media, the queen was often discussed and, in many cases, denounced for Britain’s history of colonialism and her handling of royal scandals. CNN, for example, will start carrying live TV coverage at 5 a.m. Although Thompson expects a “very big” audience, he does not see it proportionally rivaling the 1953 the coronation. “I don’t think this funeral can possibly penetrate the global attention the way the 1953 coronation did — or even the wedding in 1981. And yet, the coronation coverage found an audience of 85 million viewers in the US, according to the BBC.

Many production companies make work-for-hire or don't control the rights to a project once it is sold off to a studio distributor. Based on January interviews with five entertainment industry experts and insiders, Insider identified a list of 10 production companies that could be compelling acquisition targets as M&A activity continues.
