During our residency training in psychiatry at the Boston VA medical center between 2017 and 2021, we witnessed an arresting trend. Cannabis had been legal in Massachusetts for nearly a decade, but seemingly overnight many of the center’s elderly, Vietnam veteran patients started to declare their deep allegiance to cannabis use. Maybe it took a decade for them to get hooked on weed, or perhaps it took that long for pot smokers to feel comfortable coming out of the closet. Whatever the case, the more we asked, the more we realized that our older patients were using cannabis, and they were using it a lot. According to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, cannabis use among Americans over 65 increased from 0.4% in 2006 to 4.2% in 2018.

Transgender youths reported more life satisfaction and fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety after receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy for two years, according to a new study. However, medical associations such as the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, among others, oppose efforts to restrict gender-affirming care for minors. In addition to the New England Journal of Medicine study, about half a dozen others have shown that access to puberty blockers and hormone therapy can improve mental health outcomes, including reducing suicidal ideation, among transgender youths. Three studies — two published in 2020 and another published in 2021 — found that earlier access to gender-affirming medical care is associated with better mental health. They also noted that improvement in mental health varied widely, and that some participants continued to report high levels of depression and anxiety and lower levels of positive emotions and life satisfaction.

But too often, this behavior is an excuse for avoiding the mucky work of maintaining relationships, both personal and professional. Many managers and employees want to escape the unchecked animus they experience online, preferring the workplace feel like a safe cocoon. This year we should all work to reverse the trend and lean in to conflict — and conflict resolution — instead. Perfectionism affects and, in turn, limits the ways we feel safe communicating, which makes perfect sense. The pandemic, not surprisingly, is another culprit, exacerbating students’ experience of relational tension.

Doctors are calling on the public to familiarize themselves with lifesaving CPR techniques after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during a football game Monday night in Cincinnati. Hamlin received CPR, which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, to restore his heartbeat on the field, the Bills said in a statement. The American Heart Association said it saw a 200% increase in web traffic to its CPR site after news of Hamlin’s cardiac arrest emerged. More than 30 states require public school students to learn CPR before high school graduation. Another possible solution, Toft said, is for the U.S. to require CPR training to obtain driver’s licenses — a strategy deployed in some Scandinavian countries.

CNN —More than 55% of people involved in serious or fatal road accidents tested positive for drugs or alcohol, according to a new study. Alcohol and drugs can impair a person’s reaction time, thinking and physical ability to navigate the road. The study found that a quarter of serious or fatal accidents involved someone who tested positive for some form of weed, and nearly a quarter more had alcohol in their system. About 11% of people tested positive for some form of stimulant, like cocaine or methamphetamines, and 9% had opioids in their system. In 32% of the fatal accidents and 18% of the ones with serious injuries, there were two or more drugs in the system of someone involved.

New York CNN Business —E-cigarette maker Juul Labs said Tuesday that it has settled litigation it faced in the United States, resolving a substantial amount of legal issues for the company. “The global resolution covers more than 5,000 cases brought by approximately 10,000 plaintiffs against Juul Labs and its officers and directors,” the company said in a news release. The investigation found that Juul deliberately marketed its products to young people, even though e-cigarette sales to children are illegal. In the past, Juul Labs has sold some of the most popular vaping products in the United States, especially its flavored products. A court temporarily blocked the FDA ban, so the products are still for sale in the United States.

That’s according to the latest international survey from consulting firm Willis Towers Watson, which included responses from 1,550 US employers. The study looked at parental reporting of racist experiences their children faced between 2016 and 2020. By comparison, 1% of parents of White children reported their kids had faced discrimination in 2016, and that increased to 1.7% in 2020. Hendrix-Dicken says the findings are significant because exposure to discrimination in early childhood can have long-term consequences on health. “As an Indigenous person myself, perhaps the most personally significant and surprising finding is the rate at which Indigenous children are experiencing discrimination,” added Hendrix-Dicken.

Migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border are prompting U.S. President Joe Biden's administration to call for unfreezing Venezuelan funds held in foreign banks that would provide needed food and medicine, the sources told Reuters. It also has some in Venezuela's opposition parties worried about the political impact of releasing funds that Maduro could claim credit for ahead of a potential 2024 presidential election. The United Nations drafted a first proposal to oversee the fund in mid-October, the sources told Reuters. Opposition envoys discussed the aid package with U.S. officials during their meetings last week in Washington, four of the sources said. For the United Nations, it could become one of the largest funds ever handled, even though the total amount that could be legally released is not clear.

The legislation requires the state’s Office for the Aging to consider gender identity and expression, sexual orientation and HIV status when it calculates which seniors need the most help. “This legislation is an important step in addressing those inequities while helping ensure LGBTQ older New Yorkers receive the same respect and support as anyone else in the state,” Hochul, a Democrat, said in a statement Monday.
