I worked as a park ranger at state and national parks for six years. I also love parks like Shenandoah National Park, Congaree National Park, and Yosemite National Park. AdvertisementWhile working as a park ranger in state and national parks, I was often asked which national park was my favorite. With national park visitation on the rise, travelers want to know which locations are worth their hard-earned PTO. So many national parks and national park sites have special places in my heart, but here are the six I always recommend to travelers.

Congaree National Park — South CarolinaYou can kayak in Congaree National Park. Jonathan A. Mauer/ShutterstockSouth Carolina’s Congaree National Park is home to one of the country's largest expanses of old-growth forest. But the park is best explored from a kayak or canoe when it floods. The park is free to visit and open year-round, but because this is South Carolina, expect heat, humidity, and mosquitos in the summer. Unsurprisingly, fall, winter, and spring are the best time to visit.

For decades, tours have pierced these gaps on powerful boats, much to the dismay of the area’s Indigenous Traditional Owners, who say the site is sacred. Talbot Bay’s main boat tour operator, Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures, will cease traversing the falls in March 2028, with all other operators to stop by the end of 2026. Jeff Mauritzen/Design Pics Editorial/Getty ImagesThe Horizontal Falls ban aims to restore the sanctity of this site. In preparation for the Horizontal Falls ban, the Dambeemangaddee stated they have begun creating new videos and brochures that will explain their culture and spiritual connection to Talbot Bay. “By traversing the falls, visitors experience the awesome nature of this unique environment,” Hall said in a statement earlier this month.

After traveling to 59 US national parks, a few stand out more than others. Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming tops my list of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. I wanted to explore the US, but I also wanted to see if van life was something I could do full-time. I quickly realized that these small costs — eating out, gas station snacks, souvenirs — are where van life can get expensive. I'm not saying van life is necessarily cheaper than city living, but I am convinced it can be if I work at it.

It can help prospective early retirees figure out how much money they can spend in retirement without running out. When Lauren and Steven Keys set out to achieve financial independence and allow themselves the freedom to quit their 9-to-5s, they kept this formula in mind. But then they did an early retirement "test run" of sorts in 2015: They quit full-time work and traveled to Hawaii for six months. What they realized is that early retirement doesn't necessarily mean they'll never work again. Lauren and Steven Keys quit full-time work in their 20s.

After visiting 39 US national parks, one stands out as the most unique I've been to. Unlike many national parks, Hot Springs National Park is set in the middle of an Arkansas city. This park features a row of historic bathhouses and the only brewery located in a US national park. Hot Springs National Park, on the other hand, is the country's second smallest national park and is set right in the middle of a small Midwest city.
