SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea has been forced to repeatedly shut down runways at the two main airports for the capital, Seoul, since June due to disruption from trash-carrying balloons launched by North Korea, a South Korean lawmaker said Wednesday, citing aviation data. North Korea has launched more than 5,500 balloons with bags of trash attached to them since late May, saying it was responding to balloons carrying propaganda leaflets flown by South Korean activists. The balloons are carried by wind and some have dropped in the South, including near the presidential office and on airport runways. On June 26, Incheon airport runways were closed for a total of 166 minutes, the most over 24 hours, according to aviation data released by Yang’s office. On Monday, the military said it was ready to take “stern military action” if it believed the North had “crossed the line,” but declined to elaborate.

CNN —The US government is “intensely tracking” an ongoing threat by Iran against current and former US officials, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday. Law enforcement officials have been concerned about the persistent threat of Iran potentially attempting to assassinate former Trump officials and the former president himself, multiple sources familiar with the matter have previously told CNN. US officials have not detailed the threats against current officials, and Blinken on Wednesday did not reveal further information. Congress is considering additional money for the Secret Service as part of its effort to keep the government funded ahead of a September 30 deadline. Hong Kong CNN —Shanghai was brought to a standstill on Monday morning by what authorities say was the strongest typhoon to directly hit the Chinese financial hub in more than seven decades, with flights, trains and highways suspended during a national holiday. Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in an industrial suburb southeast of the metropolis of 25 million people around 7:30 a.m. local time. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said it packed top wind speeds of 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph), the equivalent of a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane. The storm is the strongest to make landfall in Shanghai since 1949, according to Chinese state media. The China Meteorological Administration on Monday issued a red typhoon warning, its most severe alert, warning of gale force winds and heavy rainfall in large swathes of eastern China.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said it packed top wind speeds of 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph), the equivalent of a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane. The administration on Monday issued a red typhoon warning, its most severe alert, warning of gale force winds, heavy rainfall and coastal floods in large swathes of eastern China. The typhoon is expected to quickly weaken into a tropical storm as it moves inland toward the west. Bebinca is the second major storm to hit China this month, following deadly Super Typhoon Yagi, the world’s second most powerful tropical cyclone so far this year. Shanghai is generally not in the direct path of strong typhoons, which typically make landfall further south in China.

☆ Russian military aircraft detected off Alaskan coast for third time in past week, NORAD says

CNN —The North American Aerospace Defense command intercepted Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska three times over the last week in what appears to be an uptick in activity amid tensions between the US and Russia. The US and Canada, which make up NORAD, first intercepted a pair of Russian military aircraft on Wednesday. On Friday, a pair of TU-142s, Russian reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft, were detected by NORAD. One day later, the US and Canada intercepted two Russian IL-38 planes, another type of reconnaissance and anti-submarine military aircraft. The aircraft this past week did not enter US or Canadian sovereign airspace, NORAD said.

An Alaska Airlines plane was forced to abort takeoff at Nashville International Airport in Tennessee after a Southwest Airlines flight was cleared to cross from the same runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines Flight 369 was headed to Seattle on Thursday morning and had received clearance to take off from air traffic control, the airline said in a statement, when Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the end of the same runway, the FAA said. The Alaska pilots had to brake so hard and fast that the tires on their plane blew out, the airline said. Damaged tires on the Alaska Airlines jet at the Nashville, Tenn., airport after takeoff was aborted Thursday. It said it sent another plane to Nashville to take them to Seattle on Thursday night.

The pilots of a FedEx cargo plane couldn’t see the runway or the airfield at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. On Thursday, another near-miss was added to the list when an Alaska Airlines plane and a Southwest plane nearly collided in Nashville. In some cases, hero pilots such as Bradeen and Carvajal have kept collision courses from turning deadly. But about three miles out from landing, they grew uneasy when an air traffic controller cleared the Southwest flight to take off in front of them. The pilots’ awareness was heightened, but Bradeen said he didn’t realize a collision was imminent until about 100 or 150 feet away.
