WASHINGTON — Despite mounting opposition from his own party, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., vowed Tuesday to stay the course and put his government funding package on the House floor on Wednesday. His initial strategy to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month is expected to fail and deal House Republicans an embarrassing blow. Due to their paper-thin majority, Republicans can afford only a handful of GOP defections on the vote, and many more than that have publicly voiced their opposition. “I am in this to win this,” Johnson told reporters at his weekly news conference. Afterward, the speaker added: “We are going to put the SAVE Act and the CR together, and we’re going to move that through the process.

Kamala Harris, Outfitting a New Era

In the end, she did not wear a white suit. For the biggest, most consequential speech of her life, for the headline appearance in four days of high pageantry, Kamala Harris accepted her nomination as the Democratic candidate for president in navy blue. That’s a bigger symbolic statement than it may at first appear. Many women in the United Center in Chicago wore white. That’s what she offered in her speech — “a chance to chart a new way forward” — and that’s what her suit represented.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s sudden ascent to the top of the Democratic ticket has generated a host of questions about her economic agenda, including how much she will stick to the details of President Biden’s positions, tweak them, or chart entirely new ones. When she begins to roll out her policy vision this week, Ms. Harris is likely to answer only some of those questions. During an economy-focused speech on Friday in Raleigh, N.C., Ms. Harris will outline a sort of reboot of the administration’s economic agenda, according to four people familiar with Ms. Harris’s plans. She will lay out an approach relatively light on details, they said. It will shift emphasis from Mr. Biden’s focus on job creation and made-in-America manufacturing, and toward efforts to rein in the cost of living.

The new short documentary “It’s Okay” explores the experiences of two young brothers at a Drag Story Hour event in North Carolina, one of more than a dozen states that have considered restrictions on drag performances in front of minors in recent years. An additional four states passed laws that could be used to restrict drag, according to Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ think tank. GLAAD, a national LGBTQ media advocacy organization, found that drag events faced more than 160 protests and significant threats between early 2022 and April 2023, with some events targeted by armed protestors. France said he felt like the people who were left out of the national conversation about Drag Story Hour were the kids who attended them. UNESCO's World Heritage Committee named a site in the Gaza Strip — Saint Hilarion Monastery, or Tell Umm Amer — to both its "World Heritage" and "World Heritage In Danger" lists in late July. The decision, made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi, India, reflects the ancient monastery's value and need for protection, according to UNESCO. The Committee inscribed the monastery — one of the oldest sites in the Middle East, according to UNESCO — to both lists using an emergency procedure set forth in the World Heritage Convention. Use of the emergency procedureSimultaneous inscriptions to UNESCO's World Heritage and its "In Danger" lists are rather common, a UNESCO spokesperson told CNBC. Use of UNESCO's emergency procedure fast-tracked Saint Hilarion Monastery/Tell Umm Amer's inclusion onto its World Heritage Lists, a procedure which normally takes at least two years.

But he blamed Congress for blocking a federal trial that would have resulted in swifter justice. Traffic was “severely disrupted” on three lines where fires had been set: the Atlantic, Northern and Eastern lines, the company said, and many trains had been canceled. The mood was already tense in Paris, where security has been tightening for weeks ahead of Friday night’s Opening Ceremony. The company said that another attack had been thwarted on the line that connects Paris to southeastern France.
