Last week, UniCredit announced it had taken a 9% stake in Commerzbank, confirming that half of this shareholding was acquired from the government. Commerzbank shares jumped 20% on the day UniCredit's stake was announced. A cross-border styled merger between UniCredit and Commerzbank would be more preferential than a domestic merger between Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank, according to Reint Gropp, president of the Hall Institute for Economic Research. "The German banking structure is long overdue for a consolidation process. The German bank also has less excess capital than UniCredit and therefore "cannot really afford" a takeover, Alloatti said.

After months of high interest rates, the economic tides appear to be shifting. Experts largely expect the Federal Reserve to slash interest rates during the central bank's meeting on Wednesday, a reversal of a rate-hiking policy aimed at taming post-pandemic era inflation. For consumers, declining short-term interest rates will come as a relief. Versions of all three vehicles currently offer guaranteed interest rates north of 5%. That means, for certain savers, now may be the last opportunity to lock in a relatively high interest rate on short- to medium-term investments, says Amy Arnott, a portfolio strategist with Morningstar Research Services.

It's also common to draw parallels between the dot-com bubble and today's hype, leading investors to wonder if there's an AI bubble that's about to pop, too. Goldman Sachs' big AI headline of the month is "To buy, or not to buy, that is the question." The note from September 5, led by Peter Oppenheimer, suggests the answer is "to buy" but also to diversify. And the third is the application providers, which are the companies creating services for end users to harness AI. Core inflation rose unexpectedly, dashing hopes for a bigger rate cut from the Fed. US indexes slumped on Wednesday, with the Dow dropping as much as 600 basis points in the early morning as traders took a mixed-bag of inflation data. That's the lowest headline inflation rate recorded since early 2021. On the other hand, cutting interest rates by just 25 basis points means higher for longer interest rates. "Our biggest concern is that the market sell-off becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy causing corporate CEOs to cut back on investments and consumers to pull back on spending leading to further cuts and a recession," the analysts added. "In our view, the direct impact of these steep market declines is limited," they said in a note published Monday. Sustained market declines in the wake of the recent global sell-off could become a "self-fulfilling prophecy" that eventually leads to a recession, Morningstar DBRS analysts warned. The analysts also said that the impact of the market volatility on banks is likely to be limited, even if further market declines materialize, or if the U.S. enters a recession. There was also "no material impact" expected for capital management by banks in Japan, a region that also saw steep declines.

Get out of cash — that's what many on Wall Street have been saying since expectations of rate cuts started rising earlier this year. They're now doubling down on that call, with the U.S. Federal Reserve signaling that it would finally cut rates in September. That would make cash rates less attractive than other parts of fixed income. "An easier tack from the central bank is likely to buoy risk markets like high yield fixed income and other spread product, including structured products, investment grade corporates and emerging market debt," said Robert Tipp, chief investment strategist and head of global bonds at PGIM Fixed Income.
