CNN —On a rocky outcrop almost 2 miles beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean off Costa Rica, researchers have documented an active octopus nursery. The discovery of an active community of octopus moms and babies solved a mystery that had perplexed scientists. We saw babies being born.“The researchers also found one other smaller octopus nursery on a low-temperature hydrothermal vent on an as-yet-unnamed seamount. Scientists believe this octopus is potentially a new species of Muusoctopus, a genus of small to medium-size octopus. The scientists also plan to return to the site in December to collect octopus eggs from devices they deposited recently to find out why the creatures like to brood there.

The killer whales typically approach the ship from behind and then try to strike the rudder until the boat is immobilized. People online have joked the killer whales are "orcanizing" an "orca rebellion," with many social media users rooting for the whales. But the result could be an increase in fear of killer whales in the popular imagination, similar to what the movie "Jaws" did for sharks. In reality, killer whales — which got their names from hunting other whales — do not pose a significant risk of harm to humans.

Around 30 killer whales were spotted playing in Monterey Bay for more than eight hours on Sunday. Six of the whales were also captured in April attacking adult gray whales in a rare encounter. "It was the best killer whale encounter I've had and I've been studying them for 30 years," Nancy Black, a marine biologist with Monterey Bay Whale Watch and director of the nonprofit California Killer Whale Project, told Insider. Monterey Bay Whale Watch said the gray whales ultimately survived the attack but were badly injured. The unusual playful display comes as killer whales near Spain and Portugal have increasingly been damaging and even sinking boats.

CNN —New England Aquarium researchers spotted something unusual on Sunday afternoon during an aerial survey — a group of four killer whales swimming just 40 miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Killer whales, also known as orcas, are more commonly seen in areas surrounding the Arctic ice-edge and the Caribbean, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Katherine McKenna, assistant research scientist at the New England Aquarium in Boston, was the first to notice the group, or pod. Another atypical killer whale sighting — involving particularly large numbers — also occurred last weekend in coastal waters on the other side of the United States, in California’s Monterey Bay. “That was the best sighting I’ve seen in my 35 years of killer whale research,” Black told CNN.

The Donut Hole, in La Puente, doesn’t sell the very best doughnuts in the Los Angeles area, but I love going there. Driving through its absurd, gigantic fiberglass doughnut — a pristine example of mimetic architecture — is a brief, giddy and almost spiritual experience. An edge, architectural or otherwise, is practically required in the unusually saturated, competitive doughnut market of Southern California. It might be a glamorous seasonal doughnut, like the strawberry-stuffed beasts you can find at the Donut Man, in Glendora, from February to September. I am consistently pleased by the simple chocolate glazed at Colorado Donuts — though if I’m with my nephews, the chewy, pull-apart, rainbow-colored mochi doughnuts from Mochi Dochi are always the stronger choice.

Then she attached them to 13 juvenile female elephant seals that are part of a colony at Año Nuevo State Park in Pescadero, California. In shallow waters, the elephant seals even reached the seafloor, where they would rest. During REM sleep, elephant seals enter a "sleep spiral." Elephant seals sleep the most along the coast and near their foraging grounds, and that data could be used to see how shipping traffic could affect the seals.
