Tokyo CNN —Ginzan Onsen, a popular Japanese hot spring town known for its scenic snowy views, has begun limiting entry to day trippers during winter peak season, becoming another destination to tackle overtourism amid the country’s record influx of travelers. But its popularity has also caused problems for residents in the otherwise tranquil town, with reports of altercations over photo spots and parking places. Starting January 7, those wanting to enter the onsen town after 5pm will be required to purchase a ticket, according to Ginzan Onsen Information Center. Hiroyuki Ishii, from the Ginzan Onsen Overtourism Measures Project Office, told CNN daytrippers who drove often got stuck in snow-covered roads, causing traffic congestion and blocking ambulance access. Ginzan Onsen is joining a raft of popular tourist destinations to regulate visits as Japan receives a record tourism boom in recent months.

“So we are heading towards the situation that we are always dreading.”The event Reddy referred to is a hypothetical phenomenon called Kessler Syndrome. Named for American astrophysicist Donald Kessler and based on his 1978 academic paper, Kessler Syndrome — as the term is used today — has a muddy definition. Given that “Kessler Syndrome” is not an instantaneous event, scientists are debating whether the phenomenon could already be in motion. The researchers interviewed for this story offered differing perspectives on whether events indicative of Kessler Syndrome had already kicked off. MOSCOW — Russian authorities on Thursday closed all four of Moscow's airports, plus a fifth one in a city about 100 miles southwest of the country's capital, citing unspecified safety concerns. All four Moscow airports reopened after being briefly closed with the fifth airport, in Kaluga, around 100 miles from Moscow reopening later on Thursday afternoon. Sirens were also reported in the Russian city of Taganrog, located in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, according to Tangaron authorities in a post to Telegram. A third Ukrainian missile was shot down in Kursk shortly after Moscow's airports reopened, officials said. There is growing speculation that Russian air defenses may be behind the crash as Chechnya was being attacked by drones when the plane approached Grozny, its destination.

Azerbaijani sources said Russian air defenses, not a bird strike, downed the airliner. AdvertisementHowever, Azerbaijani sources said a preliminary investigation has found Russian air defenses caused the crash, which killed 38 of the 67 people on board, including both pilots. On Wednesday, Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, said in an X post that the plane was "shot down by a Russian air defense system." Others have also suggested that Russian air defenses likely played a role as images of the crash and the plane's flight track emerged. However, on Thursday, unnamed Azerbaijani government sources told Euronews that a preliminary investigation had found that a Russian surface-to-air missile caused the crash.

I love Facebook Marketplace, except for this one problem with how it does geographic searches. I often see search results that are inconveniently located because they're across a body of water. I probably spend more time browsing Facebook Marketplace than I spend on lots of other interesting and popular things. Facebook Marketplace shows me listings for items located across a body of water — even if the items are within my specified distance radius. Facebook Marketplace will then create a perfect circle of that search radius, giving you as-the-crow-flies distance in every direction.

CNN —Azerbaijan held a day of mourning on Thursday for the dozens of victims of an airliner crash in Kazakhstan, as questions were being asked over the cause of the disaster. Officials from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia, three countries linked to the disaster, urged people not to speculate about the crash until investigations have concluded. Russian state media reported that the plane was rerouted due to heavy fog in Grozny. Azerbaijan Airlines initially told AZERTAC that the incident was caused by the aircraft colliding with a flock of birds, the outlet reported. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that it would be wrong to speculate about the cause of the plane crash before an investigation had been carried out, according to Russian state media RIA Novosti.
