U.S. Skier and 2023 Women's FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Overall Champion Mikaela Shiffrin poses for a photograph during an interview with Reuters in Manhattan, in New York City, New York, U.S., April 26, 2023. The Vail, Colorado, native has exceeded even the most lofty expectations that were placed on her shoulders when she joined the World Cup circuit as a highly-touted 16-year-old. Now, having broken Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark's 34-year-old record of World Cup wins, she wants to put it beyond reach for the foreseeable future. Shiffrin, who has managed to avoid any serious injury setbacks in her career, said she saw complacency as the biggest threat to her health. Shiffrin will look to continue her dominance of the sport when she competes in the season-opening giant slalom at Austria's Soelden resort on Saturday.

Israel shouldn't be granted an unconditional green light and unrestricted authorisation to kill," Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said in an annual speech to open the Gulf Arab state's advisory Shura council, his first public comments since Qatar began its most recent efforts to mediate between Israel and Hamas. Since then, wealthy gas-producer Qatar has had an open dialogue with both Israel and Hamas which has brought about the release of four hostages held by Hamas, including two Israeli women on Monday. "We call for a serious regional and international stance against this dangerous escalation that we are witnessing, which threatens the security of the region and the world,” Sheikh Tamim said.

The three filings submitted late on Monday follow the Republican former president's attempt earlier this month seeking to dismiss the case citing presidential immunity, a claim U.S. prosecutors rebutted last week. Trump, who is the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, had sought to delay the federal trial in Washington, currently due to begin in March, until after the November 2024 election. Representatives for the U.S. special counsel's office declined to comment but have until Nov. 6 to file their response with the court. "Because the Government has not charged President Trump with responsibility for the actions at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, allegations related to these actions are not relevant and are prejudicial and inflammatory," they wrote.

US grand strategy can prop up the global order
  + stars: | 2023-10-16 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
But the United States can prevent the rules-based order from collapsing if it keeps steering a steady course with regards to Russia and China. If the United States holds firm on its grand strategy, any new geopolitical risks should be similarly contained. One explanation for the current outbreak of crises is that the United States is weaker and more internally divided than it was during the so-called “Pax Americana” era. It could easily drop down the United States’ list of priorities, says Michel Duclos, a former French diplomat who is a fellow at the Paris-based Institut Montaigne. He will struggle to unite the U.S.’s allies as he is not a champion of either the NATO military alliance or the rules-based global order.

It is a problem that five U.S. state and federal judges are wrestling with as Trump faces four upcoming criminal trials and a civil fraud case. New York state Justice Arthur Engoron already has faced off with Trump on the issue. Trump has cast doubt on Chutkan's ability to give him a fair trial and called her "highly partisan." Neel Kashkari, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, speaks during an interview with Reuters in New York City, New York, U.S., May 22, 2023. "It's certainly possible that higher long-term yields may do some of the work for us in terms of bringing inflation back down," Kashkari said in a town hall hosted by Minot State University. "But if those higher long-term yields are higher because their expectations about what we're going to do has changed, then we might actually need to follow through in their expectations in order to maintain those yields." Asked about the chances that inflation falls back to the Fed's 2% goal but the unemployment rate does not rise sharply -- the so-called soft landing for the economy -- Kashkari said it's looking "favorable." Still, he cautioned, if the economy stays too strong, the Fed may need to raise rates further to slow it, risking a harder landing.

"This quarter is all about higher interest rates for longer," said Mike Mayo, an analyst at Wells Fargo. "There is a constructive environment, and investment banking fees tend to be higher through the end of the year," said Jason Goldberg, a banking analyst at Barclays. Despite the renewed optimism, investment banking activity remains depressed. As rates rise, bond prices fall, representing losses on paper that would be realized if the banks sold the bonds. More broadly, "we're back into this environment where investors think interest rates are going to remain higher for longer," he said.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump looks on during a break at a Manhattan courthouse as he attends trial in a civil fraud case brought by state Attorney General Letitia James against him, his adult sons, the Trump Organization and others in New York City, U.S., October 4, 2023. Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has denied wrongdoing and said the case is part of a political witch hunt. James is seeking at least $250 million in fines, a permanent ban against Trump and his sons Donald Jr and Eric from running businesses in New York and a five-year commercial real estate ban against Trump and the Trump Organization. Trump, who attended the first three days of trial in Manhattan earlier this week, has said he will testify. While this is a civil case, Trump faces other major legal challenges that have been a financial drain and made him the first sitting or former U.S. president to be criminally charged.
