Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla. — one of three lawmakers vying to succeed Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-KY, as Senate majority leader — suggested Sunday that Trump would probably need Congress' help. "The tariffs, that most likely is going to require 60 [votes in the Senate] unless there's some way we can get that done through reciliation with 51 [votes]," Scott said on Fox News "Sunday Morning Futures." It avoids a filibuster, which requires 60 votes to overcome. Trump has vowed across-the-board tariffs of 10% to 20% on all imports arriving into the United States and at least a 60% tariff on Chinese imports. Economic experts dispute whether Trump's tariff plan, especially the tax on global imports, can be done via executive action.

The exact number of people who could face deportation after arriving in the U.S. legally is not known, but it is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. Trump’s plan to end the two Biden programs comes as the president-elect’s promised plan to carry out mass deportations is taking clearer shape. The sources cautioned, though, that they may not be considered top priorities for deportation after Trump takes office, but could still be deported eventually. Since the migrants entered the U.S. legally, any attempt by Trump to deport them will likely be challenged in court by various groups. Trump used a similar policy at the end of his first term when the U.S. deported migrants from third countries to Guatemala.

Rafael was moving west across the Gulf of Mexico Friday morning as the first major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico in November for almost 40 years, bringing the threat of life-threatening conditions to the southern United States coastline. Forecasters said the storm could cause dangerous surf and rip-tides across the whole Gulf region in the coming days, after causing havoc in Cuba where millions are still without power. ET Rafael was 585 miles east of the mouth of the Rio Grande with sustained wind speeds of 120 mph, making it a Category 3 hurricane, moving west at a rate of 9 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. Rafael is now tied with Hurricane Kate in 1985 as the strongest storms recorded in the Gulf. The storm is expected to weaken throughout the weekend, but it could still produce tropical storm-force winds — which is between 39 and 73 mph — up to 115 miles from its center.

One US company, just two days after Trump’s reelection, says it isn’t wasting time getting out of China. Steve Madden, a $3 billion shoe company, announced Thursday that it would rapidly halve its Chinese production to avoid Trump’s tariffs. But here’s the catch: Steve Madden isn’t moving its production to the United States. ‘There for a reason’The retail industry has been crying foul over Trump’s tariffs for quite some time – apparel and shoe companies in particular. Trump’s tariffs could cost the typical middle-income US household more than $2,600 per year, according to research from Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Brent crude oil futures fell 26 cents, or 0.3%, to $75.37 per barrel by 0209 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 35 cents or 0.5% to $72.01. Hurricane Rafael has turned to the west after lashing Cuba where it knocked out the country’s electrical grid, leaving its 10 million residents in the dark. Rafael will continue to move away from western Cuba on Thursday and will weaken over the central Gulf of Mexico. “On the forecast track, Rafael is expected to move over the southern Gulf of Mexico for the next few days,” the National Hurricane Center said. HAVANA — Cuba’s national electrical grid collapsed on Wednesday as Hurricane Rafael slammed into the island’s southwest shore, packing sustained winds of 115 mph and wreaking havoc on the already crisis-stricken country. The hurricane was churning about 60 miles west of Cuba’s capital Havana on Wednesday night, after lashing the capital city of nearly two million people with driving rain and violent wind gusts. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center warned of a “life-threatening storm surge, damaging hurricane-force winds and flash flooding” across much of western Cuba. Cuba’s state-run grid operator UNE said the high winds had caused the country’s electrical system to collapse. Forecasters predict Rafael will spin off towards the western Gulf of Mexico later this week, though the track remains uncertain, the hurricane center said.

Over the past few years, he said, it's looked for factories in other countries, including Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil. Rosenfeld said about two-thirds of Steve Madden's business are U.S. imports. Of that, he said, "we currently source a little bit more than 70% of those goods from China." That means slightly less than half of its business would be at risk of tariffs on Chinese imports, he said. He said the company has moved more of its production outside of China since tariffs began under Trump's first administration.

Oil prices regain ground as investors eye U.S. election fallout
  + stars: | 2024-11-07 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices edged up on Thursday following a sell-off triggered by the U.S. presidential election, as risks to oil supply from a Trump presidency and a hurricane building in the Gulf Coast outweighed a stronger U.S. dollar and higher inventories. Brent crude oil futures rose 26 cents, or 0.35%, to $75.18 per barrel by 0125 GMT. Trump's election had initially triggered a sell-off that pushed oil prices down by more than $2 as the U.S. dollar rose to its highest level since September 2022. Donald Trump is expected to reimpose his "maximum pressure policy" of sanctions on Iranian oil. U.S. crude inventories rose by 2.1 million barrels to 427.7 million barrels in the week ending on Nov. 1, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday, compared with expectations for a 1.1 million-barrel rise.

The former president's litany of campaign pledges include steep tariffs, tax cuts, deregulation and a push to withdraw from key global agreements. Trump's favorite wordTrump has previously described "tariff" as his favorite word, calling it "the most beautiful word in the dictionary."
