Still, “lack of flood insurance is the largest insurance coverage gap we see across the United States,” he said. Here’s what you’re likely to encounter if you’re shopping around for flood insurance policies. Flood insurance 101Homeowners with mortgages are almost always required to have home insurance by their lenders. Most flood insurance is offered through the federally backed National Flood Insurance Program, a part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The NFIP estimates that more than 40% of NFIP flood insurance claims come from outside high-risk flood zones.

Almost half of young women have at least a bachelor’s degree compared to 37% of young men. That compares to 2008, when Barack Obama won the votes of 66% of young men. One of the biggest financial pressure points for young men has been higher rents, which are up around 20% since 2020. Young men are more likely to be financially dependent on their parents compared to young women, with 74% of women describing themselves as mostly financially independent compared to 62% of young men, according to a Pew survey. I think Trump will do better with young men than among young women — the gap will be pretty significant in terms of voter support — but I don’t think Trump’s going to win an overwhelming majority.

He’s lived through many storms in his 30 years on Longboat Key, but Bob Parrish said he’s never before seen the level of destruction that Hurricane Helene blew into town a little more than two weeks ago. It also brought a double whammy of destruction from two major hurricanes to a string of islands and their residents who were still rebuilding from Hurricane Ian in 2022. Honestly, I only cried a little bit after Milton because I cried so much after Helene. Even before Helene and Milton brought the one-two punch, Rodocker was still reeling from Hurricane Debby’s path of destruction in August. “It was like a right, a left and an undercut.”Marco Island, seen here on Sept. 26, was badly flooded by Hurricane Helene.

The Supreme Court may soon consider two cases that could dismantle limits on how close protesters can be to people at abortion clinics and other health care facilities. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, three abortion clinics have opened in Carbondale. “You can’t have protests on the steps of the Supreme Court,” he said. Some 81% of teens ages 13 through 17 feel pressure that leaves them feeling badly about their game plans, achievements, appearances, social lives, friendships and/or how informed they are about issues, the survey found. Social media makes the pressure worse for most teens, but some said social media can also help lessen it. The survey, which was conducted in fall 2023, found that 27% of teens said they were burned out. (The survey of 1,545 teens ages 13 to 17 had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.) How adults pressure kids“Adults — parents, teachers, coaches — are clearly contributing to some of the negative pressures teens feel, even if we don’t mean to,” Weinstein said.

This article is part of the Opinion series At the Brink, about the threat of nuclear weapons in an unstable world. It follows a decades-long freeze on designing, building or testing new nuclear weapons. The new buildings and cutting-edge machinery will eventually process the uranium needed to make the next generation of American nuclear weapons. Now there are an estimated 12,000 nuclear weapons in the world. It is undeniably true that the world is becoming more contentious, and nuclear weapons do deter our adversaries.

Lower courts in Colorado had concluded that Masterpiece Cakeshop and the bakery’s owner, Jack Phillips, had violated Autumn Scardina’s rights by refusing to make her a pink cake with blue frosting because of her identity as a transgender woman. Scardina had initially filed a discrimination complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division after Phillips refused to make the cake she wanted to order to celebrate her birthday and her identity as a transgender woman. Justice Melissa Hart, writing for the majority, said Scardina should have challenged that decision in an appeals court, rather than file a new lawsuit. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 ruled in Phillips’ favor but on narrow grounds that avoided setting a major precedent allowing people to claim religious exemptions from anti-discrimination laws. But in June 2023, in a case billed as a sort of sequel, the 6-3 conservative majority U.S. Supreme Court held the First Amendment protected web designer Lorie Smith from being compelled by Colorado to provide services to same-sex weddings.

All four drugs are in a class of wildly popular weight loss drugs known as GLP-1s. In the United Kingdom, authorities last year seized hundreds of counterfeit Ozempic pens — insulin pens that had been relabeled as Ozempic. Counterfeit weight loss drugs have serious health risks, according to the pharmaceutical companies and federal officials. Counterfeiters are already trying to cash in on a weight loss drug that the company hasn't even put on the market yet: retatrutide. But it's also one of the epicenters of the lucrative counterfeit drug trade, according to U.S. authorities who track counterfeit drugs.

Major infrastructure upgrades meant to protect Florida’s Tampa Bay area from flooding are months away from completion, as the vulnerable region braces for what could be the worst hurricane in more than a century, officials said. Hurricane Milton is expected to strike the Tampa area overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning with life-threatening storm surge of up to 15 feet, said Austen Flannery, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tampa office. Since then, the region’s population has grown from roughly 400,000 people to 3.8 million, and the number of buildings has either tripled or quadrupled, according to the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. The National Weather Service said Tuesday was the last full day for Florida residents to do so. “This is playing out to be one of our worst case scenarios for our area,” said Wren Krahl, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council's executive director.

Attorney General Ashley Moody issued a stark warning to those who ignore evacuation orders. WFTSFlorida leaders still working to respond to damages from Hurricane Helene issued emphatic pleas to Tampa-area residents Sunday to heed evacuation orders, as Hurricane Milton is expected to strengthen and hit the state’s western coast by mid-week. “Nobody up here can save your life if you put yourself in harm’s way.”Officials expect storm surge, other flooding and high winds that knock out power, Scott said. With some roads still flooded from Helene, residents can expect a similar kind of storm surge from Milton – but this time with strong winds, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister warned. Many people are still without cell phone service after Helene, Moody said, advising residents to buy a small AM radio and a couple of batteries.

Nicholas said upon its reopening, the location will become a testing ground for Sam's Club's newest features and emerging technology. Sam's Club and Costco have roughly the same number of U.S. clubs, but Costco pulls in about twice as much annual revenue. Sam's Club also opened The Clubhouse in August, an approximately 37,000-square-foot office building across from the retailer's headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas.
