But the real focus will be on whether widening U.S. curbs on sales of its high-end chips to China could hamper that run. The results will also be a major test for the AI-powered rally that has helped drive up the U.S. stock market this year, with the Philadelphia semiconductor index (.SOX) up nearly 50% in 2023. The Biden administration last month banned China sales of the H800 and A800 chips that Nvidia had created after previous curbs on exports to the country. Reuters GraphicsCHINA CHIPSBefore the latest China export curbs, demand for Nvidia's H800 chip, a slower version of its flagship AI chip, had outpaced rivals as it was better than the alternatives. "It's possible Nvidia's massive growth will make revenue from China less material over time," Morningstar analysts said.

The trial is the first of two antitrust cases brought by the Justice Department against Google. Photo: Hasan Bratic/Zuma PressWASHINGTON—The historic antitrust case against Google will soon be in the hands of a judge who says he has no idea how he will rule. It will be many months before U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta , who oversaw the nonjury trial in Washington, rules on the question at the heart of the Justice Department’s case: Did Alphabet -owned Google, which answers about 90% of all internet search queries worldwide, illegally cement its monopoly?

Police officers stand guard next to a barricade past the entrance of a tunnel where 40 road workers are trapped after a portion of the tunnel collapsed in Uttarkashi in the northern state of Uttarakhand, India, November 16, 2023. Acquire Licensing RightsSILKYARA, India, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Rescuers drilled about one-third of the way into the debris of a collapsed highway tunnel in India by Friday morning to reach 40 workers trapped inside for five days, officials said. Drilling had penetrated through about 21 metres (70 feet) of debris, Devendra Singh Patwal, a disaster management officer, told Reuters. Another officer with the rescue team inside the tunnel said the trapped men were doing fine. A rescue mission is currently underway at the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand to free 40 workers who are stuck inside following a landslide.

[1/2] A crane moves past police officers and rescue team members outside a tunnel where 40 road workers are trapped after a portion of the tunnel collapsed in Uttarkashi in the northern state of Uttarakhand, India, November 15, 2023. Rescue efforts have been focused on drilling through the fallen rock to create space for a pipe that can be used to pull the men to safety. Work would begin shortly to cover the 60 metres distance to reach the men, said Devendra Singh Patwal, a state disaster management official. Since the tunnel collapsed, the trapped men have been supplied with food, water and oxygen via a pipe and they are in contact with rescuers via walkie-talkies. Authorities have not said what caused the tunnel to cave in but the region is prone to landslides, earthquakes and floods.

Judge Amit Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia will rule sometime in 2024 on whether any of Google's actions broke antitrust law. APPEALS LIKELYNo matter who prevails when Mehta issues his ruling, experts say there will be an appeal. Google's default search agreements have prevented this from happening, they say. Google may also be required to spin off its Chrome browser, which has the Google search engine as its default. Chrome has almost 60% of the computer browser market, according to the Justice Department's amended complaint filed in 2021.

Nov 14 (Reuters) - Singapore-based Sea (SE.N) reported a surprise third-quarter loss as the Southeast Asian tech giant prioritized growth over profits by pouring money into its e-commerce business, sending its shares more than 17% lower on Tuesday. The company also expects to boost investments, it said, ahead of the key holiday shopping season in the fourth quarter. Sea has spent heavily in what is called "e-commerce live streaming", where products are sold over live videos, a model popular in China. The company posted a loss of 26 cents per share for the quarter ended Sept. 30, ending its streak of three straight profitable quarters. However, a global economic slowdown hit e-commerce and digital entertainment, forcing Sea to undertake hefty cost cuts including laying off thousands of employees.

Google pays Apple more than a third of its search advertising revenue from Safari under the terms of the two companies' search default agreement, an Alphabet witness said in open court Monday amid a protracted antitrust battle between Google and the Department of Justice. The 36% figure, which was not previously known to the public, is one of the clearest indications of how lucrative Google's search deal has been for both Apple and the search engine company. The search default agreement is a major focus of the proceedings. Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi has estimated in a note to clients that Apple would see $19 billion in 2023 revenue as a result of the search engine default deal with Google. "Everybody talks about the open web, but there really is the Google web," he said on the stand.

Antitrust trials are full of long stretches of detailed, often tedious testimony punctuated by telling moments. In the two-month Google antitrust trial that is nearing its conclusion, one of those moments came in a brief exchange in October. The barriers to competition in search today, Mr. Schmidtlein said, are less daunting than Microsoft’s stranglehold on personal computer software. “Let’s move on,” said Judge Amit P. Mehta, who wrote in an opinion earlier in the year that he would use the Microsoft case as a guiding framework. “I think I can figure out what the Microsoft case was about.”The antitrust fight against Microsoft in the 1990s has loomed over the government’s showdown with Google.

Three Indian cities among world's 10 most polluted after Diwali
  + stars: | 2023-11-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
NEW DELHI, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Two Indian cities joined New Delhi to be among the world's worst 10 for pollution on Monday morning, with smoke heavy in the air a day after revellers let loose with firecrackers for Diwali - the annual Hindu festival of light. It had an air quality index (AQI) figure of 420, putting it the 'hazardous' category, according to Swiss group IQAir. An AQI level of 400-500 impacts healthy people and is dangerous to those with existing diseases, while a level of 150-200 brings discomfort to people with asthma, lung and heart problems. Every year authorities impose bans on firecrackers in the capital, but only rarely do those bans appear to be enforced. Air quality in India deteriorates every year ahead of winter, when cold air traps pollutants from vehicles, industry, construction dust and agricultural waste burning.

India's weather department has forecast intermittent rain over the city and adjoining areas till early noon on Friday. Meanwhile, air in the financial capital of Mumbai has markedly improved due to showers in nearby coastal areas. This year, attention on the worsening air quality has cast a shadow over the cricket World Cup hosted by India. Scientists and authorities were planning to seed clouds in New Delhi around Nov. 20 to trigger heavy rain, the first such attempt to clean the air. Friday's rain comes two days before the Diwali festival, when many people defy a ban on firecrackers, causing a spike in air pollution.

In the past decade, Ms. Mehta said, Indians have integrated some global ingredients into their traditional cooking for Diwali. In the United States, many Indian Americans make Diwali catering orders through Facebook or WhatsApp. Urja Shukla Bhatt, of Warminster, Pa., has been taking catering orders for snacks and dinner since at least August. Her mother-in-law, Daksha Bhatt, helps make the snacks, but Urja Shukla Bhatt cooks the Indian dishes for dinner. "Unfavourable meteorological conditions, sudden increase in the farm fire incidents and north-westerly winds moving the pollutants to Delhi are the major causes for sudden spike in AQI," the region's Commission for Air Quality Management said on Thursday. Authorities ordered primary, or elementary, schools to remain shut on Friday and Saturday, while most construction work in the region has been suspended. Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

In 2021, Musk said SpaceX would spin off and take Starlink public once its cash flow was reasonably predictable. Starlink has been in the spotlight since last year as it helps provide Ukraine with satellite communications key to its war efforts against Russia. SpaceX is valued at about $150 billion and is one of the most valuable private companies in the world.
