Hong Kong CNN —An unprecedented wave of Covid cases in China has sparked panic buying of fever medicines, pain killers, and even home remedies such as canned peaches, leading to shortages online and in stores. Canned yellow peaches, considered a particularly nutritious delicacy in many parts of China, have been snapped up by people looking for ways to fight Covid. Its sudden surge in popularity prompted Dalian Leasun Food, one of the country’s largest canned food manufacturers, to clarify in a Weibo post that canned yellow peaches don’t have any medicinal effect. “Canned yellow peaches ≠ medicines!” the company said in the post published Friday. The drug shortage has spread from mainland China to Hong Kong, a special administrative region which has a separate system of local government.

"Canada's merchandise trade surplus widened in October, with a weaker Canadian dollar providing a helping hand. When expressed in U.S. dollars, Canadian exports were down 1.3% in October, and imports decreased 2.2%, Statscan said. Exports of farm, fishing and intermediate food products rose 10.2% in October to a record-high C$5.5 billion, helped by canola and wheat. The Canadian dollar was trading at 1.3625 to the greenback, or 73.39 U.S. cents, down 0.3% on the day.
Published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution scientific journal on Wednesday, the study reveals that the great bustards ate an abundance of corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas) and purple viper’s bugloss (Echium plantagineum). In humans, corn poppies have been used for their medicinal properties as a sedative and pain relief while purple viper’s bugloss can be toxic if consumed. Both plants were highly effective in killing or inhibiting the effects of the protozoa and nematodes, according to the study. The purple viper’s bugloss showed moderate defensive action against the fungi. “We normally associate self-medication in species like primates, so to see researchers studying endangered birds is brilliant,” Rose told CNN.
Voters in five states cast their votes on marijuana legalization efforts on Tuesday. The ballot measures passed in Maryland and Missouri, and failed in Arkansas and South Dakota. Although medicinal marijuana use was legalized in Maryland in 2013, Question 4 sought to add the Marijuana Legalization Amendment to the state constitution. With the passage of Amendment 3, the Marijuana Legalization Initiative, personal marijuana use is now legal in Missouri. This marks the second time voters in the deep-red Midwestern state have rejected recreational marijuana legalization.
Voters in Maryland approved Question 4, which legalizes marijuana use for adults over the age of 21. Proponents said the measure will improve the economy and benefit Maryland residents. 2022 General EmbedsBallot measure detailsMaryland's Question 4 will add the Marijuana Legalization Amendment to the Maryland state constitution. A recreational marijuana smoker indulges in smoking weed on April 14, 2020 in the Bushwick section of the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota could join 19 other states and the District of Columbia, which have already legalized recreational marijuana. A 6% sales tax on recreational marijuana would go toward facilitating automatic expungements for people with certain non-violent marijuana offenses on their records, veterans' health care, substance misuse treatment and the state's public defender system. North DakotaMarijuana legalization failed to pass in North Dakota when it appeared on ballots in 2018, losing by a margin of 41% to 59%. This election, New Approach North Dakota got a revised proposal back on the ballot.

The mid-stage study, conducted by the London-based and Nasdaq-listed COMPASS Pathways (CMPS.O), involved 233 patients with so-called treatment-resistant depression who have failed to benefit from at least two antidepressants. In tandem with psychological support, each participant received a single 25 mg, 10 mg or a control 1 mg dose of a synthetic formulation of the compound psilocybin. Additionally, about 29% of patients in that group achieved remission on a standardised depression scale. Given these patients have limited treatment options and face stigma around depression, these findings are a step in the right direction, said Rucker. The trial's findings are positive but not spectacular, cautioned Ravi Das, associate professor at the University College London Institute of Mental Health.
Health Minister Karl Lauterbach presented a cornerstone paper on planned legislation to regulate the controlled distribution and consumption of cannabis for recreational purposes among adults. Acquiring and possessing up to 20 to 30 grams of recreational cannabis for personal consumption would also be made legal. Many European countries, including Germany, have already legalised cannabis for limited medicinal purposes. The use of cannabis for medicinal purposes has been legal in Germany since 2017. Germany's pharmacists association warned of the health risks of legalising cannabis and said it would put pharmacies in medical conflict.

Indonesia has temporarily banned sales of all syrup-based medications and has been looking closely at paracetamol syrups used locally to treat fever in children that contain diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. Gambia's government is also investigating child AKI deaths linked to paracetamol syrups after 70 fatalities there. As of Thursday, Indonesia has identified 206 AKI child cases of which 99 were fatalities this year. A health ministry spokesperson declined to say in how many child AKI patients the ingredients were detected, citing the ongoing investigation.

At her bed-and-breakfast Nicole Butler hosts backyard potlucks with THC-infused food. Some hosts of cannabis-friendly rentals go beyond simply allowing people to smoke or consume weed on site. When he first started the site, Roby said his business partners were doubtful about whether people would buy into the idea of letting guests smoke cannabis on their properties. Deontae Mack has also been courting guests with his online startup Vibesbnb.com, where he lists cannabis-friendly rentals. However, the company does not allow users to directly search for cannabis-friendly rentals, or allow its hosts to list their rentals as such.
Biden sat down in the Oval Office with Cherelle Griner, wife of women's basketball star Brittney Griner, and Elizabeth Whelan, sister of former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan. Biden conducted the separate meetings to assure the families that the detainees "are at front of mind," said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. The United States in late July said it has put forward a "substantial offer" to secure the release of the two Americans. Last month, Russia's foreign ministry said it was engaged in "quiet diplomacy" with the United States about a potential prisoner swap that could include Griner and Whelan. Washington has offered to exchange Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout for Griner and Whelan, sources familiar with the situation have told Reuters.
The world's earliest limb amputation — dating back 31,000 years — has been discovered in Borneo. It gives a fascinating insight into the medical abilities of people in the Stone Age. Studies on the skeleton buried in a cave found that, after the surgery, they went on to live for six to nine years. Previously, the earliest recorded amputation was carried out 7,000 years ago on a Neolithic farmer from France. They explained that intensive post-operative care of the patient, including temperature regulation, bathing, wound care, and disinfection, would have been vital for the patient.

He's trying to push Vancouver to manage or legalize it, as cannabis sellers did in 2015. Larsen told the Vancouver Sun that Canada would not have legalized cannabis without store owners like himself, who sold cannabis before it was legal. Now, he's betting that selling the substance will push the government to go ahead and make it legal. Canada legalized cannabis in October 2018, but the illegal or semi-illegal market in Vancouver persisted, especially because of licensing issues. As of November, there were multiple stores openly selling mushrooms in the city, in one case as a way of making up lost pandemic revenue, according to the Daily Hive Vancouver.
