Since then, more than 12,000 people have died in Gaza since Israel began airstrikes on the enclave, according to Palestinian authorities. The deal will see the release of 50 women and children held captive in Gaza by Hamas, according to Qatar, which mediated negotiations between Israel and the militant group. In return, Israel will grant a “humanitarian pause” in its assault of the enclave and release some Palestinian prisoners. The deal also allows hundreds of trucks carrying aid relief, medical supplies and fuel to enter Gaza, it said, echoing details in Qatar’s statement. More details of the release deal will be sent to families later today, said the Israeli government.

There have been five wars in the last 15 years between Israel and Hamas. The United States, the international community and Israel’s neighbors must move aggressively toward that goal. The only way these necessary changes will happen is if the United States uses the substantial leverage we have with Israel. For many years, the United States has provided Israel substantial sums of money — with close to no strings attached. Over the years, people of good will around the world, including Israelis, have tried to address this conflict in a way that brings justice for Palestinians and security for Israel.

One baby was discharged in Gaza and went home with his parents to their temporary shelter, while two others stayed in the ICU unit of the Emirati hospital in Rafah, Gaza. We live in Area C of the West Bank, which means the Israeli military has complete civil and security control over our lives. In 2002, they cut off the main road that connected Tuba to the surrounding villages, including the children’s closest school and the city of Yatta, where we buy all of our food and medical supplies. Throughout it all, we had been awaiting the final ruling from the Israeli high court about whether the Israeli military could force us to evacuate. Then, last year, the court ruled in favor of the state, allowing Israel to evict about 1,200 Palestinians, including those in my village. In Tuba, as in nearby villages, settlers have also targeted the water systems and solar panels we have built and are entirely dependent on, as if to remind us of our vulnerability.

CNN —Thirty-one babies were evacuated from Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza on Sunday, in a high-stakes operation that involved multiple international agencies rushing the newborns in ambulances through active fighting, as fears remain for their survival. Al-Shifa, the largest hospital in Gaza, has become a flashpoint in Israel’s war in the besieged enclave. Patients and health staff with whom they spoke were terrified for their safety and health, and pleaded for evacuation,” the statement said. The 31 evacuated babies are all fighting serious infections, said the WHO, citing doctors at the Rafah hospital where they are being treated. Eleven of the babies are in “critical condition,” said the WHO, adding that the babies had fallen ill due to the lack of medical supplies at Al-Shifa Hospital.

On Tuesday, Palestinian authorities proposed a supervised evacuation of Shifa Hospital, a sprawling complex that runs several city blocks in the heart of Gaza City. Gaza health officials and Hamas deny that. The military said soldiers were accompanied by medical teams and had brought medical supplies and baby food as well as incubators and other equipment. But health officials say supplies and extra equipment are not enough to save patients and ongoing fighting makes it almost impossible to safely move patients. The Red Cross said it was “extremely concerned” about the situation at Shifa hospital, noting that hospitals are protected under international humanitarian law and must be spared from violence.
