During the third quarter, U.S. dealmaking contributed to a larger-than-usual share of global activity and offset a decline in volumes in Europe and Asia Pacific, accounting for about half of global volumes. Deal volumes in Europe and Asia Pacific fell 31% and 9%, respectively. To date, private equity deal volumes have slumped 48% to $313.73 billion, compared to the same period last year. Deal activity driven by activist shareholders was muted as several big-name activists reached settlements with corporate boardrooms. Dealmaking in technology, which typically accounts for the largest share of deal volumes, has fallen 51% so far this year.

LONDON, Sept 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Marco Patuano is starting with a small but firm step. After years of M&A-fuelled expansion, the new CEO wants to return Cellnex to investment grade and focus on organic growth and efficiency. Spanish court rejects appeals to suspend banking tax payments

MADRID, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Spain's High Court has rejected appeals by lenders Bankinter (BKT.MC), Sabadell (SABE.MC) and Cajasur to suspend payments of the extraordinary banking tax while it reviews the levy's validity, El Economista newspaper reported on Monday. Spain approved in December a temporary 4.8% levy on banks' net interest income and net commissions above a threshold of 800 million euros ($861 million) as part of measures aimed at easing the cost of living of ordinary Spaniards amid high inflation. Some banks and associations objected to the tax and filed challenges before the High Court, while the European Central Bank also warned of adverse effects on the banking system. The High Court could not immediately confirm or deny the report, which also said that the court had refused to raise the question of the levy's constitutionality before the Court of Justice of the European Union. Inditex shares have risen around 64% over the past 12 months as the world's biggest clothing retailer successfully passed cost increases on to shoppers and reported record profit margins. But after several U.S. retailers including Macy's and Foot Locker warned of weak consumer spending, fears of an economic slowdown have come back into focus. "I think companies will be more disciplined and will reduce pricing where they think they can gain volumes," said Fabio Di Giansante, portfolio manager at Amundi, which holds shares in Inditex. In the six months to July last year, Inditex's sales increased by 25% and profits climbed by 41% - but that was in comparison with a period marked by COVID-19 lockdowns around the world. According to Bernstein analysts, Inditex's key rival H&M (HMb.ST), set to report third-quarter sales on Friday, has pushed through more price increases than peers over the past year.

The payout includes the approximately $8.4 billion of damages Burford sought plus about $7.6 billion of 8% prejudgment interest running from May 3, 2012, about 2-1/2 weeks after the seizure. Argentina, which is in dire financial straits including a scarcity of foreign exchange reserves, pledged an immediate appeal. Shareholders' $8.43 billion damages estimate was based on Argentina's seizure of the YPF shares on April 16, 2012, which they said transferred "control." But the judge found it "telling" that Argentine officials treated April 16 as the seizure date, which stripped Repsol of its power to run YPF and distribute capital. The judge also called 8% interest "appropriate and equitable," and "well within the range" imposed by Argentine courts.
