☆ England’s last ‘witch’ may have survived execution, new research suggests

But new research suggests that one English woman convicted of witchcraft and condemned to be hanged may have escaped the noose. Alice Molland – who has long held the tragic record of being the last woman in England to be hanged as a “witch” – was sentenced to death in 1685. In June 1685, Avis Molland – by now widowed – emerges in court records as an informant about a potential revolt, at a time when the Duke of Monmouth was attempting a rebellion against the king. Avis Molland died a free woman eight years later. Worland has spent 18 years unearthing victims’ details, and has successfully campaigned to have memorials to executed “witches” in Colchester and Chelmsford.

Historical evidence then pointed the study authors to a Belgian tombstone export business thriving at the time, where they theorize the tombstone began its journey. Burial within a church was typically saved for high-status individuals and clergy, and Yeardley was one of two knights to die while the Jamestown church was in use, according to Jamestown Rediscovery. Colonial period cemeteries have suffered neglect and vandalism, with the Knight’s Tombstone likely surviving for as long as it did because vegetation concealed it, she added. It seems to be pretty inherent there in nature, but most (colonists) didn’t have the resources to import a nice carved stone,” Key said. “There were a lot of people being buried in the church, but only one of them had a big old black (limestone) tombstone from Belgium.”

The Mary Rose was one of the largest warships of the Tudor navy during King Henry VIII’s reign until it sank on July 19, 1545, during a battle against the French. The Mary Rose was one of them, and the flagship became the king’s favorite. The hull of the Mary Rose, supported by a steel cradle attached to a lifting frame, was raised on October 11, 1982. The research team used Raman spectroscopy, a nondestructive method that preserves valuable samples, to study the bones, Shankland said. “Investigating the impact of this on the spine would further our understanding of bone chemistry changes with age, but also with stress from activity.”

CNN —A federal judge said a woman who accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting her cannot proceed with her lawsuit under a pseudonym after finding the rapper has a right to defend himself. Judge Vyskocil ruled the woman has to file the lawsuit under her name by November 13 or the lawsuit will be dismissed. In the lawsuit, the judge notes there is no allegation that Combs threatened this woman about going public with her allegations. “The Court appreciates that Combs is a public figure and, therefore, Plaintiff is likely to face public scrutiny if she proceeds in her own name. The judge said that Combs is entitled to know her identity to investigate her claims.

CNN —A “staggering array” of witches’ marks have been discovered on the walls of a Tudor property in England. News of the discovery, aptly timed to coincide with Halloween, was released by English Heritage, a charity that looks after hundreds of historic monuments, buildings and sites. These include a “staggering array” of designs, according to English Heritage, though there’s a notable concentration in the servants’ wing of the hall. Over the course of two years, long-time English Heritage volunteer Rick Berry discovered and mapped around 20 carvings at the Tudor property. In 2019, hundreds of witches’ marks were found scratched into the walls of an English cave system in the East Midlands, central England.

CNN —It’s been more than six years since Irvine, California, banned short-term rentals — and the city’s mayor hasn’t looked back. “I certainly don’t think it’s a major driver of the housing affordability crisis,” Nieuwerburgh said. “The reality is that there just simply aren’t enough short-term rentals out there to really make a difference,” Yedinsky said. In Irvine, although Mayor Khan said the ban had been well received, Irvine’s housing affordability issues aren’t yet solved. Boeing's still-new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, faces urgent challenges, including a worker strike. Ortberg is focusing on communication, trust, and future innovation at Boeing to get the company on the right path. Ortberg, in a letter released to employees along with the company's third-quarter results, said Boeing's customers want — and need — the company to succeed. "With the right focus and culture, we can be an iconic company and aerospace leader once again," he wrote. "When you feel that the CEO is with you, and the CEO is feeling your pain, it makes it more tolerable and provides hope for the future," Franklin said.
