CNN —Suspicious packages were sent this week to election offices in more than 20 states, leading to an FBI investigation, triggering evacuations and rattling staff, according to a CNN survey of state offices and Associated Press reporting. Karen Brinson Bell, the executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, told CNN that that the battleground state was also targeted this week. Officials in Kansas and New York said in statements and interviews that, after the letters were noticed, they evacuated their offices. Postal Inspection Service are investigating a series of suspicious mailings sent to election officials in several states,” the FBI said in a statement. CNN —Allies of former President Donald Trump who control the Georgia State Election Board approved a controversial new rule Friday requiring counties to hand-count the number of ballots cast at polling places on Election Day, despite bipartisan objections from election officials and poll workers. State Election Board member Janelle King, one of the three Republican members of the state election board who was praised by former President Donald Trump last month, told reporters before the meeting that the changes are necessary. “The overwhelming number of election officials that have reached out to me have been opposed to this,” State Election Board chairman John Fervier an independent who opposed the move, said before the vote. The state election board in Georgia does not certify the results of any election. The state election board also investigates election irregularities.

Albertsons and Kroger own more than 300 grocery stores in the state and control more than half of grocery sales there. Sweden’s economy has, in many ways, suffered from the same tribulations as the rest of Europe: recent bouts of crushing inflation and recession, and now the prospect of meager growth in a world split by geopolitical and economic conflict. Nevertheless, this tiny Nordic country has a roster of high-tech entrepreneurs that is the envy of its neighbors. Klarna, a financial tech firm, and King Digital Entertainment, the maker of the video game juggernaut Candy Crush, are other examples of homegrown tech powerhouses. “They have something — particularly in the tech sector — which other European countries do not really have to the same extent,” said Jacob Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund. That entrepreneurial track record has been attracting renewed attention at a time when anxieties are mounting about Europe’s ability to compete with American and Chinese advancements in high technology.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 struck the Los Angeles area shortly after noon on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. People reported feeling it strongly across the Los Angeles area. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it received no initial reports of damage or injuries as it checks infrastructure citywide. "Having lived through the Northridge earthquake (magnitude 6.7 in 1994), today's tremor made me flash back to what we know are lifesaving rules during an earthquake: drop, cover, and hold on. It struck on the first school day for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight Sunday and into the predawn hours Monday, giving skywatchers around the world a chance to enjoy one of the best shooting star displays of the year. The Perseids are usually one of the most anticipated skywatching events of the year because the shower tends to deliver a high rate of shooting stars. Weather permitting, stargazers could see as many as 100 per hour from dark locations. Experts are predicting favorable conditions for this year’s show, particularly because the moon will set by around 11:30 p.m. local time, which means the shooting stars will not be washed out by bright moonlight. While the meteor shower's peak will likely produce the highest rate of shooting stars, Perseid meteors have been visible for weeks — and will continue to be seen after this weekend.
