Eighteen children were injured after a fire erupted Wednesday afternoon at a daycare center located in the basement of a home in the Queens borough of New York City, fire officials said. A 29-year-old woman was arrested last week after she spent four days fraudulently enrolled in a New Jersey high school as a student, school district officials said. New Brunswick Public School District Superintendent Aubrey Johnson said Tuesday at a Board of Education meeting that Shin had attended New Brunswick High School for several days before she was caught. The two EMS workers accused of killing a Springfield, Illinois, man in their care who died last month after they transported him strapped tightly facedown on a stretcher pleaded not guilty. Peter J. Cadigan, 50, and Peggy J. Finley, 44, were charged with murder on Jan. 9 in the death of Earl Moore, Jr., 35, on Dec. 18. Moore died shortly after the EMS workers placed him on a stretcher in the prone position with tightened straps placed on his back and lower body, Sangamon County State’s Attorney Dan Wright said. A 72-year-old woman was killed and two others were injured when a Denny’s restaurant sign in Kentucky fell from its post and crashed onto an occupied car below. Police responded to a Denny's on the 2000 block of North Mulberry Street in Elizabethtown around 1:30 p.m. Thursday on a report of the fallen sign. Photos show the sign on top of a blue vehicle, crushing in parts of the roof. An investigation into what caused the sign to fall is underway, but police said fierce winds likely contributed to the incident. Peak wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph were observed across parts of Kentucky on Thursday, the National Weather Service office in Louisville said.
One person was killed and a Georgia trooper was injured Wednesday as officials cleared out the site of a controversial proposed law enforcement training center in Atlanta. Tensions have been rising in the city over the proposed Public Safety Training Center: a sprawling stretch of 85 acres of forested land in DeKalb County that will have a shooting range, amphitheater and a mock city that will be used for training. Opponents have called the center "Cop City" and protesters have camped out in the area of the proposed site to decry construction. Other law enforcement officers returned fire, hitting the man, who died at the scene, the GBI said. A movement called “Defend the Atlanta Forest," which opposes the training center plans, contradicted the GBI’s account, saying: “Police killed a forest defender today, someone who loved the forest, someone who fought to protect the earth & its inhabitants.

He "claimed that at some point in time Billie had been watching Mr. Anderson and writing songs about Mr. Anderson, and that Mr. Anderson really wanted to meet Billie,” O'Connell wrote. The order seeks to bar Anderson from harassing her and contacting her in person or via social media platforms. The family of a California public defender who died while celebrating his first wedding anniversary in Mexico believes he was the victim of a "brutal crime," their lawyer said Tuesday. The liaison, who is not identified in the statement, told the family that Blair died of severe head trauma and that his case had been forwarded to prosecutors for a possible homicide investigation, the statement said. Blair's family plans to carry out its own independent investigation, hiring a private investigator and a forensic pathologist, Scarsone said. Orange County Public Defender Martin Schwarz told The Register that Blair had worked for the public defender’s office since 2017, the year he passed the bar exam. His wife, Kimberly, also worked for the public defender’s office, Schwarz told the newspaper.
A former NFL player has been arrested and charged with kidnapping in Mississippi, police said. Ridgeland police officers found Powe, and accomplice Gavin Bates, 35, at a Chase Bank on Highland Colony Parkway Thursday, police chief Brian Myers told NBC affiliate WLBT of Jackson. Police said a victim contacted police and told officers he was kidnapped “against his will” and was “forced to withdraw money” at the bank, Myers said. The victim is safe, the police chief said, and the matter is under investigation, the station reported. Powe and Bates were both subsequently detained on a kidnapping charge.
A search is underway for a clouded leopard that escaped from its habitat at the Dallas Zoo Friday morning, officials said. “The Zoo is closed today due to a serious situation,” officials tweeted, adding staff and Dallas police were working to find the animal. Judge Frances C. Gull issued a gag order in December, after Allen's lawyers shared a press release defending his name. On Friday, Gull ruled that gag order will stay in place, John McGauley, Court Executive of Allen County said. Gull also ruled that the trial will not be moved to another county, but instead a jury pool from another county can be selected. Gull gave the prosecution and defense one week to agree on a county to elect a jury from and bring it to Carroll County. Their bodies were found the next day in woods area near the Delphi Historic Trail, a half-mile upstream from the bridge.
Two Illinois EMS workers have been charged with murder in connection with the death of a 35-year-old man in their care, who they allegedly strapped face-down on a stretcher. Peter Cadigan, 50, and Peggy Finley, 44, emergency medical workers for LifeStar, were charged with first-degree murder in the Dec. 18 death of Earl L. Moore Jr, Sangamon County State’s Attorney Dan Wright announced Tuesday. Officer body camera footage showed the EMS workers place Moore onto a stretcher in a prone position, according to police. Moore died at the hospital at 3:14 a.m., Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said at the Tuesday news conference. They are currently detained in Sangamon County jail on bail of $1 million each.
A Hasidic Jewish man in New York City was left with a broken leg after a car crashed into him in a hit-and-run, as police say the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime. The vehicle, a 2017 Mercedes Benz, was traveling southbound on Albany Avenue and was making a left turn when it collided with the victim. Surveillance video footage shows the vehicle turn and slam into the man without stopping, throwing the victim onto the ground, and continue driving on. A mother fatally shot an intruder who broke into her Louisiana home with her two young children inside earlier this week. Robert Rheams, 51, broke into the Hammond home of a woman early Sunday, armed with a shovel and lug wrench, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said. After making entry, he got into a physical altercation with the woman, “which ultimately led to Rheams being shot by the homeowner,” the sheriff's office said. Rheams was out on parole after serving 20 years in prison for armed robbery at the time of the home invasion, the sheriff’s office said. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief of Operations and Finance, Jimmy Travis, said it appeared that the homeowner was exercising her Second Amendment rights to protect herself and her children in a home invasion.
Opening arguments kicked off Monday in the federal trial of Sayfullo Saipov, the Uzbek immigrant who in 2017 plowed a rented pickup truck on a New York City bike path, killing eight people in its path of destruction. The Oct. 31 attack was the deadliest terrorist attack in New York City since Sept. 11, 2001. Police said Saipov, then 29, was inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group, or ISIS, in launching the attack. Officials are searching for a missing Pennsylvania mother who failed to pick up her son from a bus stop last week. Montgomery County District Attorney's OfficeShe was scheduled to pick up her son from the bus stop the following day on Jan. 4, but failed to show up. Her car was found parked outside of her home with her car keys, wallet, purse and work cellphone inside, the district attorney’s office said. “Law enforcement is very concerned about the welfare of this mother, Jennifer Brown,” District Attorney Kevin R.
