Yellen added that Zambia's debt overhang was a drag on its whole economy and that China had been a barrier to reaching a resolution on the southern African country's debt problem. "I specifically raised the issue with Zambia (with Chinese officials) and asked for their cooperation in trying to reach a speedy resolution. She said it was also critically important for Zambia to address corruption and human rights, and create a business environment that would promote investments and trade.

The divergence contrasts with 2019, before the pandemic, when "there was little differentiation in spending between the two groups," the McKinsey analysts said. Only 14% of that income group said they significantly cut their spending. "So, the more affluent group continues to spend, while lower-income groups are more hesitant and hold spending decisions." The share of urban households wanting to save "for a rainy day" rose to 58% — its highest since 2014, the McKinsey survey found.

The French spirits group will draw on its experience in blending and ageing spirits, as well as marketing to high end clientele, as it seeks to tap into affluent consumers' thirst for exclusivity. The new business could be “potentially strategic,” Remy Cointreau chief executive Eric Vallat told Reuters. Remy Cointreau's Maison Psyche was born from the collaboration of Baptiste Loiseau, Cellar Master of Remy Martin and Sophie Labbe, Principal Perfumer of Switzerland's fragrance group Firmenich.
