Phil Murphy, a Democrat, signed a law Monday prohibiting public schools and libraries from banning books and protecting librarians who obey state law. “Across the nation, we have seen attempts to suppress and censor the stories and experiences of others,” Murphy said in a statement. New Jersey is the third state to sign a law prohibiting the banning of books at public schools and libraries, following Illinois and Minnesota. The new law is set to take effect in a year from the governor’s signing. However, the state education commissioner and the New Jersey state librarian are permitted to start implementing it immediately “as may be necessary,” the law states.

Before he encountered Penny, Neely, a former Michael Jackson impersonator, ranted about being hungry and thirsty and said that he wanted to return to jail and didn’t care if he lived or died, witnesses testified. Penny, 26, a former Marine and Long Island native, placed Neely in a chokehold that prosecutors said lasted almost six minutes. “I submit to you there was a rush to judgment, based on something other than medical science,” he told jurors. “You obviously cannot kill someone because they are crazy and ranting and looking menacing,” Yoran told jurors in her closing argument. "One of the unintended consequences of trying to impose limits on fees is that it often leads to higher rates," said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com. Card issuers are mitigating their exposure against borrowers who may fall behind on payments or default, he said. watch now"It doesn't surprise me that card issuers would try and get out in front of these changes," said Matt Schulz, LendingTree's chief credit analyst. Republicans, after years of doom and gloom, are feeling great about the economy again. After years of mostly good vibes about the economy, consumer sentiment among Democrats tumbled in December to the lowest level since the summer of 2022, when gas prices were near $5 a gallon. The post-election shift in the economic perceptions of Republicans and Democrats is not shocking. Those are Chelsea’s next seven Premier League fixtures before they travel to face Manchester City on January 25. At a time when the other challengers are showing real fragility — Arsenal drawing with Fulham, Manchester City dropping points at Crystal Palace this weekend — Chelsea are pretty consistent. That’s the men: the Women’s Champions League is also in town and it’s bringing Valerenga vs Arsenal, Manchester City vs St Polten, Bayern Munich vs Juventus and Chelsea vs Twente. Back in the late 1880s, when unqualified political appointees were wasting taxpayer dollars, there was a move to professionalize government workers in a merit-based bureaucracy. The political “spoils” system, which the bureaucracy replaced, was demonized for its cronyism, inefficiency and graft. His charge to then-Vice President Al Gore was to streamline government through a National Performance Review, or NPR. There are some major differences, but then, as now, the plan was to take a holistic look at government and recommend changes to improve how taxpayer dollars are spent, including by culling the federal workforce, cutting regulations and more. Reagan’s Grace Commission: In 1982, President Ronald Reagan’s commission began its quest to get rid of hundreds of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.

Nearly 100 former national security officials signed a letter criticizing President-elect Donald Trump's decision to nominate former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and called for closed-door Senate hearings to review any government information about her. In the letter obtained by NBC News, the officials urged the Senate to "carefully evaluate" whether Gabbard is "equipped" for the position, which requires Senate confirmation. "Following her trip to Syria, for example, Ms. Gabbard aligned herself with Russian and Syrian officials." The former officials also proposed closed-door hearings that would allow lawmakers to fully review any government files on Gabbard, a former Democratic House member from Hawaii. Reached for comment, a spokesperson for Gabbard on the Trump transition team slammed the letter, as well as the signers' credentials.

The National Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning after a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California on Thursday. Nearly 5 million people are under that warning from Davenport, California, up to Douglas/Lane Line, Oregon, the agency said. Long said the reason for that delay — between the earthquake and potential tsunami impacts — is because earthquake waves travel faster. A tsunami wave “in the open ocean tends to travel about as fast as a jet plane flies, whereas earthquake waves travel much faster,” she said. That delay means it is easier for experts to issue tsunami warnings, Long said.
