MONTREAL/BOGOTA Dec 16 (Reuters) - Latin America is drawing early investment for jet fuel produced from materials like forest residues and palm oil as emission-conscious airlines scour emerging markets for less-polluting fuel to power flights, industry executives say. While most sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is produced in the United States, Europe, and Singapore, Latin America is emerging as a budding market. "Latin America right now is really a hot spot for Honeywell." Producing and distributing SAF in regions with faster-growing traffic like Latin America is key to meeting industry targets, said Landon Loomis, Latin America president for U.S. planemaker Boeing (BA.N). And Vibra Energia (VBBR3.SA) is working with Brasil BioFuels (BBF) to produce palm oil-based jet fuel in 2025.
HONG KONG, Dec 12 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Hong Kong’s bankers and officials fantasise about the moment China finally ditches its Covid-19 restrictions. Mainland Chinese firms account for eight of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing’s (0388.HK) ten largest ever IPOs. It remains faster for Chinese companies to list in Hong Kong, rather than join the long queue on the mainland. Hong Kong could also host more offerings from places like the Middle East and Southeast Asia, as Cha envisions. IPOs on the Hong Kong exchange have raised $7.1 billion so far in 2022, according to Refinitiv data for the year up to Dec. 7.

SINGAPORE, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Singaporean state investor Temasek Holdings (TEM.UL) will open an office in Paris next year as it seeks to focus on investments in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, it said on Tuesday. "Our decision to open a new European office reflects the continuing importance of EMEA as an investment destination," Temasek's EMEA head Uwe Krueger said in a statement. Ranked among the top 10 state investors in the world, Temasek's portfolio value rose to a record S$403 billion ($293 billion) in the year to March 2022. Temasek, which has stakes in large listed Asian companies such as DBS Group (DBSM.SI) and China Construction Bank (601939.SS), is mainly focused on Asia. That puts Hong Kong in a league of its own. The competitive tension between Hong Kong and Singapore is greater than ever. The danger is that Hong Kong’s new embrace of virtual assets will set up a regulatory race to the bottom, even if FTX’s collapse means it might happen at a slower pace. The policy statement notes that retail investors in other markets have been granted exposure to virtual assets including through exchange-traded products. [1/2] A view shows a LATAM airline plane following a collision between a LATAM Airlines jet and a vehicle on the runway of Peru's Jorge Chavez International Airport, in Lima, Peru November 18, 2022. REUTERS/Sebastian CastanedaBUENOS AIRES, Nov 20 (Reuters) - The operator of Peru's capital airport said on Sunday that a firetruck involved in a dramatic and fatal collision with a LATAM Airlines (LTM.SN) passenger jet had been doing a pre-arranged emergency drill. On Sunday, Lima Airport Partners, which operates the airport, said in a statement on Twitter that the firetruck had entered the runway as part of an emergency response drill coordinated between the operator and the air traffic authority. "On Nov. 18, during the morning and until the beginning of the exercise, the firefighting team made all the necessary arrangements to execute the maneuver," the airport operator said. There is authorization to carry out an exercise, but it is outside the areas that currently have transit operations," he told radio station RRP on Saturday.
It was unclear why the firetruck entered the runway while the plane was taking off. This is the second incident in less than a month involving LATAM Airlines, after one of its planes had its nose destroyed during a severe storm that forced it to make an emergency landing. Chile-based LATAM Airlines' Peru branch said it was deploying all its resources to attend to those affected, and work with authorities to support the investigation. Lima Airport Partners, which operates Jorge Chavez, Peru's most important airport, said the airport will remain closed at least through 1 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Saturday. The flight was LA2213, covering the domestic Lima-Juliaca route, LATAM Airlines said.

BENGALURU, Nov 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The loss-making Southeast Asian technology giant’s decision to ditch its growth-at-all-costs strategy is showing results. The $28 billion U.S. listed games-to-payments company Sea (SE.N) has been exiting some markets and slashing jobs and discounts. Overall group revenue grew 17% to $3.2 billion in the quarter, beating analyst estimates. Sea is now working toward achieving Shopee’s adjusted EBITDA breakeven by the end of 2023. The improvements will shore up support for its decision to remain in Brazil, a big emerging market.
Piyush Gupta might be banking’s boldest boss

Piyush Gupta of $65 billion Singaporean lender DBS Group (DBSM.SI) appears to be that CEO, whether he thinks of himself that way or not. Yet the two banks trade on a similar multiple of 1.5 times their estimated 2022 book value, according to Refinitiv. There is limited room for growth in DBS’ tiny home market, a city with a population of 5.5 million people. That, plus the pressure to maintain that 1.5-times-book market value, means Gupta needs to keep finding ways to grow. U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks on Nov. 14 while at the G20 summit in Indonesia.

Wealth darling DBS channels Singapore’s success

MUMBAI, Nov 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Singapore’s status as a financial centre is thriving, and DBS Group (DBSM.SI), the city-state’s $63 billion wealth darling led by Piyush Gupta, is reaping the benefits of its home market’s success. It makes the Lion City’s pragmatism a key pillar of support: Singapore generated 62% of DBS' total income in 2021. DBS’ wealth management business is attracting money at a rapid clip: net new asset inflows amounted to S$15 billion during the first nine months, doubling from a year ago, Gupta noted. The bank’s annualised return on equity hit a record high of 16.3% too. The bank’s return on equity also hit a new record high of 16.3%, up from 13.4% in the prior three-month period.
The results rounded up a strong showing by Singapore banks after larger peer DBS Group (DBSM.SI) reported a forecast-beating 32% jump in quarterly profit to a record high and UOB Group (UOBH.SI) also posted a record quarterly profit. Singapore banks, which boast one of the strongest capital buffers in the world, have effectively weathered the COVID-19-induced slump and are now benefiting from rebounding Asian economies. Singapore-based OCBC's net profit increased to S$1.6 billion ($1.13 billion) in July-September versus the S$1.55 billion average estimate from four analysts, according to Refinitiv data. SINGAPORE, Nov 3 (Reuters) - DBS Group (DBSM.SI) on Thursday reported a forecast-beating 32% jump in quarterly profit to a record high and forecast a bullish outlook, as higher interest rates boosted net interest margins at Southeast Asia's largest lender. Net profit at DBS came in at S$2.24 billion ($1.58 billion) in July-September, beating an average estimate of S$1.97 billion from four analysts, according to Refinitiv data. The bank's return on equity rose to a record 16.3% and net interest income surged 44%. Its net interest margin, a key profitability gauge, improved to 1.90% in the quarter from 1.43% a year earlier. Last week, local peer UOB Group (UOBH.SI) beat market estimates with a record quarterly net profit of S$1.4 billion after net interest income swelled and credit allowances declined.
SANTIAGO, Nov 2 (Reuters) - The largest pilots union of Latam Airlines (LTM.SN) in Chile voted to strike on Wednesday, a day before the company said it was planning on concluding its exit from bankruptcy. The Union of Latam Pilots (SPL) said it represents 313 of Latam Airlines's approximately 500 pilots and that 99% of its members voted to approve the strike. The statement said that the company's proposal to link pre-pandemic salary to flight hours is unfeasible and could be reached, at best, three months out of the year. While pilots voted to strike, Chilean law establishes up to four days in which either party can request mediation from the country's labor department.
