I was trained to chat with an older adult over the phone, considering it wasn't currently safe to visit in person. FriendshipWorks aims to address loneliness in older adults, but one-third of Americans are lonely, regardless of age. I know I was, with just a small social circle of family members and friends from growing up in the suburbs. Our unconventional friendship wouldn't have happened if I hadn't decided to volunteer (and volunteering is a common recommendation to build social connection). We're more than 30 years apart, as she's 72 and I'm 38, we come from different parts of the country, and we have different religious beliefs and racial backgrounds.

As the years passed and my children grew older, conversations with friends who also have kids thankfully moved on to more stimulating topics. I was reminded of this recently when I caught up with three close friends who are footloose and child-free. Chatting to my friends without kids was like having a glimpse into the person I used to be. Making time for my friends was good for meWhen I left the restaurant, I felt recharged and refreshed. New York CNN —OpenAI is worried that people might start to rely on ChatGPT too much for companionship, potentially leading to “dependence,” because of its new human-sounding voice mode. ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode sounds remarkably lifelike. Now, OpenAI is apparently concerned that fictional story is a little too close to becoming reality, after it says it observed users talking to ChatGPT’s voice mode in language “expressing shared bonds” with the tool. Some people are already forming what they describe as romantic relationships with AI chatbots, prompting concern from relationship experts. For now, OpenAI says it’s committed to building AI “safely,” and plans to continue studying the potential for “emotional reliance” by users on its tools.

Even works of art that we think of as coming from the minds of lone creative geniuses were group efforts: Michelangelo, for example, recruited some 11 painters to assist him with the Sistine Chapel. Still, it’s only in the past few decades that attitudes around labor and the power of collectivism have shifted, making artists not only quicker to collaborate but also to give credit where credit is due. No matter the field, though, certain projects require an outsize number of bodies. Then, too, there’s the practical if unstated fact that, as artists and creative types, these people are in the business of pursuing perfection. Often, combining forces is the only way to get them closer to it.

Earlier this week, another product contending for the future of AI companionship made its debut: an eavesdropping necklace called Friend. AdvertisementSchiffmann's original vision for an AI hardware device was a pendant that would act as a more standard-fare AI assistant called Tab — he once described it as a "wearable mom." Of the many AI hardware devices that launched in recent months, such as Humane's AI pin, Meta's smart glasses, and Rabbit's AI-powered R1, Friend is the most personal contender. In fact, on the day Friend launched, a competing AI hardware founder named Nik Shevchenko released a diss track — as any self-respecting 23-year-old AI hardware founder would do — insinuating that Schiffmann stole his idea. (It would not be the first time that Shevchenko built an open source competitor that closely resembled another AI hardware device.

Prickles have been around for at least 400 million years, dating back to when ferns and their relatives emerged with some bearing prickles on their stems. Lonely Guy genesBy removing prickles from various species, including roses and eggplants, the authors found that a LOG gene was responsible for the prickles in about 20 types of plants studied. LOG-related genes are found in all plants, even dating back to mosses, which are regarded as the first dry-land plant, Lippman said. “(LOG genes) have been repeatedly co-opted (a biological shift in a trait’s function) in different plant species for the formation of prickles, and also repeatedly lost in lineages where prickles are lost. For agricultural purposes, removing prickles could make harvesting easier and pave the way to get lesser-known produce into grocery stores.

Cats vs. Dogs? Cats Are Better. - The New York Times

It’s not easy not being a dog person. I once moderated a conversation for The Times between Susan Orlean and Julie Klam, both authors of books about dogs. “Everybody who reads my book is a dog person,” Klam, whom I also profiled for her memoir, “You Had Me at Woof,” said at one point. The very bad date in the story “Cat Person” has, of course, two cats. By contrast, I could see the appeal of dogs if they didn’t need to be trained, didn’t bark, didn’t need to be walked, didn’t shed, didn’t smell, didn’t require washing or grooming.

And oh, by the way, getting some daily exercise, not living in an environment that’s really polluted, that would be good.

A survey of over 2,000 content creators conducted by the influencer marketing agency NeoReach last year found that 48% of creators earned less than $15,000 a year.
