Scantinel Photonics has raised $10 million in Series A funding from PhotonDelta. The German startup uses photonics chips to make autonomous driving more precise and safe. The startup says the game-changer is its use of photonics chips. These photonics chips are used to make LiDAR solutions and devices — which are integrated into AVs, and key in helping vehicles to sense objects and estimate distances on the road. Scantinel says it is pioneering a "new wave of LiDAR technology" that's more immune to interference and precise in its imaging, said managing director Dr. Michael Richter.

Lidar firms Ouster, Velodyne to merge in all-stock deal

Nov 7 (Reuters) - Lidar makers Ouster Inc (OUST.N) and Velodyne Lidar Inc (VLDR.O) said on Monday they would merge in an all-stock deal, forming a company with a combined market capitalization of about $400 million. Velodyne stockholders will receive 0.8204 shares of Ouster for each share held, representing a 7.8% premium to Velodyne's closing price on Friday. The combination will allow Ouster and Velodyne to consolidate their market position and product portfolios through cost-savings in engineering, manufacturing and administration. Velodyne shares were up 5.6% while Ouster rose about 1% in premarket trading. Existing Velodyne and Ouster shareholders will own about 50% each of the combined company.

Lidar makers Ouster and Velodyne have agreed to merge, combining roughly $400 million in market value. Lidar sensors are considered important components of nearly all autonomous-vehicle systems currently under development, and are finding increasing applications with advanced driver-assist systems as well as other areas of robotics. "We all knew that there is a need for consolidation in the market," Pacala told CNBC. Between them, Ouster and Velodyne had a combined $355 million in cash as of September 30, Pacala said. But as newer rivals with solid-state lidar sensors — including Ouster, founded in 2015 — entered the automotive space, the early leader fell behind.
The firm estimates that in 10 to 15 years, it's achievable for the humanoid robots market to reach $6 billion and continue to grow from there. Forecasting growth in the sector shows that humanoid robots could become a widely adopted terminal device, following only smartphones and electric vehicles, according to Goldman Sachs. Where investment opportunities lie The firm put together a list of stocks in its coverage universe that could benefit from the trend towards adoption of humanoid robots across a few different areas. "What's unique in humanoid robots' sensing module is gyroscope/ Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU), to keep the robot's balance," said Du. Automotive sensor company Luminar said it has begun production of its Iris lidar units for an automaker client, a major milestone that it had previously expected to reach around year-end. Luminar's lidar units are part of an advanced driver-assist system on the Rising Auto R7, a new electric SUV from the largest Chinese automaker, SAIC Motor. Luminar previously announced deals to supply other automakers including Volvo Cars and Polestar, but it hadn't previously revealed plans to begin production of the Iris units earlier than 2023. The lidar units are being made in a factory in Mexico owned by Canadian electronics manufacturer Celestica. Celestica and Luminar are together building a new dedicated factory, also in Mexico, that will be able to manufacture 250,000 Iris units per year.

Russell's company makes LiDAR tech, but Elon Musk has continually spoken out against the radars in the past. Russell founded Tesla self-driving rival Luminar Technologies in 2012 when he was a 17-year-old. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The National Science Foundation announced Thursday that it will not rebuild a renowned radio telescope in Puerto Rico, which was one of the world’s largest until it collapsed nearly two years ago. Instead, the agency issued a solicitation for the creation of a $5 million education center at the site that would promote programs and partnerships related to science, technology, engineering and math. The decision was mourned by scientists around the world who used the telescope at the Arecibo Observatory for years to search for asteroids, planets and extraterrestrial life. The education component is very important,” said James Moore, assistant director for education and human resource directorate at NSF. He said by phone that one of the agency’s priorities is to make STEM more accessible and inclusive and that the proposed education center would fill that need.
Swedish EV maker Polestar on Wednesday unveiled a new electric SUV that it's counting on to expand its sales and presence in the United States. The new model, called the Polestar 3, is a five-passenger EV that the company describes as a "performance SUV." Priced at about $84,000, the car comes loaded with technology, including an Nvidia computer running advanced driver-assist software developed by Polestar's part owner, Volvo Cars. Another potential rival, BMW's all-electric iX SUV, starts at about $85,000. Polestar is a joint venture between Volvo Cars and Chinese automaker Geely, which has owned Volvo Cars since 2010.
TOKYO, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Making its market debut on Wednesday, Japan's Socionext Inc (6526.T) bucked softening sentiment toward chips by surging 15% in Tokyo's biggest initial public offering of the year so far. The total deal size was 76.8 billion yen ($525 million), including an overallotment of 2.74 million shares. Based in Yokohama, Socionext was formed in 2015 out of a merger between chipmaking units at Fujitsu Ltd (6702.T) and Panasonic Holdings Corp (6752.T). Socionext says it designs SoCs for clients including major automakers and 5G vendors. But Chu said Socionext was coming in at a "wide discount" to international peers.
Despite having a smaller order book than its peers, JPMorgan expects Luminar will exit the decade as a revenue leader. He said Luminar is expected to be the "supplier of choice" in the long-run due to its engagement and design. The Orlando-based company has also invested in its software stack with Zenseact, which Chatterjee sees as a differentiator that will help Luminar outgrow peers solely focused on hardware.
