The Social Democrats secured their strongest backing in more than two decades. Danes on Tuesday handed the Social Democratic Party a mandate to form a new government in a general election seen as a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's handling of the pandemic and her leadership to overcome yet another crisis. "Thanks to all Danes who have trusted us with your vote, it's a huge vote of confidence. The Social Democrats again became the biggest in parliament with 27.5% of votes. She said she will submit the resignation of her one-party government to the Queen on Wednesday and seek to form a broad government.
Although Lula's 2003-2010 presidency effectively reduced destruction of the rainforest, he embraced traditional industrial development with little regard for emissions. In the United States, the progressive Green New Deal languished in Congress, while President Joe Biden adapted some of the ideas for his climate agenda. Marcio Astrini, the head of environmental lobby group Climate Observatory, said Lula's proposals were a promising blueprint, but added: "Whether it will happen in practice is another matter." By contrast, Bolsonaro's campaign has said little about his environmental proposals for a second term. REUTERS/Bruno Kelly/File PhotoSAO PAULO, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Brazil's presidential election on Sunday may determine the fate of the Amazon jungle, the world's largest rainforest, after deforestation soared in the past four years under President Jair Bolsonaro. Destruction in the Amazon rainforest last year hit the highest level since 2006, according to the government's space research agency INPE. Lula took office in 2003 with levels of Amazon deforestation near all-time highs. By 2010, his last year in office, deforestation had fallen by 72% to near record lows.
CANBERRA, Australia — Australia has reversed a previous government’s recognition of west Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the foreign minister said Tuesday, prompting consternation from Israel. The Cabinet also reaffirmed that Jerusalem’s status must be resolved in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said. Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it would summon the Australian ambassador over the issue. She described former Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital as out of step internationally. Only a handful of countries, including Kosovo and Guatemala, have joined the U.S. in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
SYDNEY, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Australia on Tuesday reversed a decision of the previous government to recognise West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, saying the status of the city should be resolved through peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian people. Former United States President Donald Trump had recognised Jerusalem as the capital a year earlier. Wong told reporters Morrison's 2018 decision "put Australia out of step with the majority of the international community", and was met with concern by Muslim-majority neighbour Indonesia. The Guardian first reported a change to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website to remove language describing west Jerusalem as the capital on Monday. Israel's embassy in Canberra was closed on Tuesday, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CNN —A criticism of US lawmakers by the President of South Korea has gone viral on social media – after a hot mic picked him up using an expletive. In a video published by South Korean television broadcaster MBC on its official YouTube channel on Thursday, Yoon can be seen walking along the stage after chatting with Biden before turning to his aides and speaking. The Global Fund is an international organization trying to defeat HIV, TB and malaria across the developing world and Yoon’s remark appears to be a reference to Biden’s pledge to contribute $6 billion, which would require Congress approval. Many social media users have taken to mocking Yoon, while the expletive he used has become a popular search term on the South Korean online portal Naver. His remarks were not lost on members of the opposition liberal party who commented on the issue at Thursday’s National Assembly.

Dorin Chirtoacă: Moldova’s fate is indeed decided today“The fate of the Republic of Moldova is indeed decided today. Dorin Chirtoacă said that members of the electoral bureau of the polling station where he voted told him that no person got COVID-19 there after the first round. The politician noted the people should not be afraid of the alleged clashes as those reports of the last two weeks were misleading and those lies can be stopped by taking part in voting. In the runoff vote, the elections are declared valid regardless of the voter turnout. If both of the candidates get the same score, the candidate who gained more votes in the first round emerges victorious.
