"By doing so, Microsoft is trying to force customers into using its cloud computing service Azure and restricting competition in the sector." A television screen shows a news broadcasting of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol delivering a speech on emergency martial law, in Goyang, northwest of Seoul, on December 3, 2024. South Korea's won on Tuesday fell sharply against the U.S. dollar shortly after President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an emergency marital law. The U.S. dollar traded up as much as 2.7% against the won, before paring gains. Speaking during an unannounced televised briefing, South Korea's Yoon accused opposition lawmakers of controlling the parliament and throwing the country into a political crisis. Martial law refers to the temporary imposition of military authority over a civilian population, typically during a time of emergency.

President Biden has put a special emphasis on South Korea, choosing it as the first non-U.S. site for his annual international conclave, the Summit for Democracy. And in 2023, he hosted President Yoon Suk Yeol for a state dinner at the White House, where the tuxedo-clad Mr. Yoon sang “American Pie” to an adoring audience. Mr. Biden has also relied on Mr. Yoon to provide munitions for Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion. Now, with Mr. Yoon imposing martial law after wildly accusing the opposition party of conspiring with North Korea to undermine him, the American alliance with South Korea faces its biggest test in decades. We are seriously concerned by the developments we are seeing on the ground in the R.O.K.”

The secretary general of South Korea’s National Assembly, Kim Min-ki, condemned the military on Wednesday morning for breaking into the legislature during President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief imposition of martial law, saying that nearly 300 troops had stormed the compound. Mr. Kim offered the most detailed official account yet of the military’s incursion. About 230 troops were flown by helicopter onto the assembly grounds, and roughly 50 others jumped fences to gain entry, he said. Mr. Kim played closed-circuit footage of soldiers entering the compound, saying that all such video would soon be made public. As the secretary general, Mr. Kim is nonpartisan, but he was a member of the opposition Democratic Party until last spring.

President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea declared emergency martial law on Tuesday night, accusing the opposition of plotting “insurgency” and “trying to overthrow the free democracy.”It was the first martial law declaration in more than four decades in South Korea, which saw the end of a military dictatorship in the late 1980s. Mr. Yoon, who was elected president in 2022, has been in a near-constant political standoff with the opposition, which controls Parliament, and his government has faced plunging public approval ratings. In his speech declaring martial law late Tuesday, Mr. Yoon said he was making the move to “defend the free Republic of Korea from the threats of North Korean communist forces and to eradicate the shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people and to protect the free constitutional order. Through this emergency martial law, I will rebuild and defend the free Republic of Korea, which is falling into ruin.”

But with Medicare Advantage plans, there are provider networks that limit the choice of doctors and hospitals from which a beneficiary may choose, he said. Call Medicare Advantage plans or medical providers directly to find out if they are still covered, as brochures can sometimes be outdated, Cubanski said. Medigap, also known as Medicare supplement insurance, provides private insurance to help pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered under original Medicare plans. But experts say the choice between private Medicare Advantage plans and government Medicare original plans is largely personal. However, Medicare Advantage enrollees may need to get prior authorization before receiving certain types of care, Cubanski said.

The special counsel appointed to investigate President-elect Donald J. Trump is wrapping up his work without the charges he brought in two cases ever going in front of a jury. The special counsel named to lead the inquiry into Hunter Biden, the president’s son, has just seen the two convictions he secured wiped away by a presidential pardon. Mr. Trump, whose election victory last month has done nothing to blunt his desire for retribution against those who pursued or opposed him, is trying to install a new F.B.I. director, Kash Patel, dedicated to turning the nation’s premier law enforcement agency upside down. And President Biden, who for years cast himself as the principled defender of democratic norms and the rule of law, defended his grant of clemency to his son by saying Hunter had been “selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted” in a process infected by “raw politics.”

Opinion | Can Rahm Emanuel Flip the Script Again?
  + stars: | 2024-12-03 | by ( Bret Stephens | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There’s a buzz around Rahm Emanuel — the former Bill Clinton adviser, former Illinois congressman, former chief of staff to President Barack Obama, former mayor of Chicago — possibly becoming the next head of the Democratic National Committee. “What started as two wars in two theaters is now one war in two separate theaters,” he says of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. “We need to ensure that it does not expand into a third theater.”How soon might that happen? I mention 2027, a year that’s often seen as China’s target date for reunification with Taiwan, if necessary by force. Unlike with Taipei, to which America’s obligations are deliberately ambiguous, with Manila and Seoul our defense commitments are ironclad.

Axon Enterprise could be set up for continued gains in the months ahead, according to Morgan Stanley. Analyst Meta Marshall upgraded the stock to overweight, and her price target of $700 reflects about 10% upside from Monday's close. This comes as the stock has risen more than 146% year to date. "While the name is expensive and may need to grow into valuation given run YTD, over the long term, we see it as a core holding." "As a result, we are more willing to ascribe value to AI portfolio pulling through other products, which could lead to additional valuation upside (as prelim AI portfolio pull through is likely built into price after recent run)," Marshall continued.

CNN —A California man confessed to helping the North Korean regime prepare for an attack in a “sophisticated scheme” to illegally obtain restricted weapons and military grade technology, federal prosecutors announced Tuesday. Wen, who allegedly overstayed his visa and remained in the US illegally, was arrested Tuesday by the FBI. Thousands of US military personnel are stationed in South Korea to help bolster security and stability in the region. Justice Department officials said the arrest was unrelated to Tuesday’s internal political turmoil amid a declaration of martial law and clashes outside South Korean parliament. Akil Davis, head of the FBI’s Los Angeles division, said: “Not only did the investigative team prevent additional restricted items going to the North Korean regime, but they gathered valuable intelligence for the United States and our allies.”

South Korea's president, Yoon Suk Yeol, on Tuesday invoked martial law, a stunning move that threw the nation into turmoil. The last time that a South Korean leader declared martial law was in 1979 following the assassination of the president. South Korea's parliament voted unanimously to block the president's decree, declaring the shocking move invalid, but martial law remains in effect. The semi-official South Korean news agency also said that media and publishers fall under the control of the South Korean military. Hours after Yoon declared martial law, live TV showed South Korea's parliament passing a motion requiring the law to be lifted.

A little more than four years ago, the Supreme Court delivered a surprise victory to L.G.B.T.Q. Rejecting the position of the Trump administration, the court ruled by a lopsided margin that a federal civil rights law protected transgender people from workplace discrimination. In the intervening years, transgender rights have become a ferocious battleground in the culture wars, and controversies over health care, bathrooms, sports and pronouns played a prominent role in the presidential campaign. But the Supreme Court has had only glancing encounters with such issues since the employment discrimination case in 2020, which featured a majority opinion from Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, Mr. Trump’s first appointee to the court. That will change on Wednesday, when the court hears its second major case on transgender rights, a challenge to a Tennessee law that prohibits some medical treatments for transgender youths.

Elon Musk's battle over his Tesla pay is entering a new phase. A Delaware judge ruled on Monday that Tesla's shareholder vote wasn't enough to pass Elon Musk's $55 billion compensation package. One issue that may come up is whether Musk influenced the negotiations over his Tesla pay package, as the trial judge suggested in her initial ruling, he said. Given that Musk's pay package was set to be the largest ever for a CEO, there aren't many cases to turn to for direct precedent. "When you know Delaware law, you know that stuff like that is just not going to fly," Alon-Beck said.
