Delta Air Lines and its pilots' union have reached a preliminary agreement for raises topping 30% over four years, a milestone deal that could sharply drive up aviators' pay across the industry. Delta pilots voted in October to authorize a strike if a deal wasn't reached, while pilots at several airlines have picketed this year demanding contract improvements. Delta and the union were edging toward a deal in mid-November, CNBC reported. It also includes a one-time payment of 4% of 2020 and 2021 pay each, plus 14% of 2022 pay. The Delta agreement said pay rates will exceed United's and American's pay by at least 1% over the course of the agreement, which still needs union and pilot approval.

Some Medallion members can no longer access the lounge when traveling internationally in select cabins. According to Delta, starting January 1, only Diamond, Platinum, Gold, and Silver Medallion members can buy annual memberships to the Sky Club. Sky Club members flying on a basic economy ticket, as well as Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion Members flying internationally in Delta's Main Cabin or Comfort+ can no longer access the Sky Club, effective February 2. Access can be granted through other means, like having an eligible American Express credit card or a Club membership, according to Delta. These are huge changes for the airline, especially since anyone can currently purchase a Sky Club membership.

Starting Jan. 1, the price of an individual membership to Delta's Sky Clubs will increase from $545 or 54,500 miles to $695 or 69,500 miles. The airline recently rolled out special VIP lines for certain Sky Clubs so its most loyal customers aren't forced to wait for entry. In July, it said customers can get into Sky Clubs within three hours of their departure time, a measure aimed to avoid crowding.

Kennedy International Airport, the state said on Thursday. New York state Governor Kathy Hochul said construction will begin early next year on a 1.2 million-square foot (111,480-square-meter), 10-gate terminal at JFK. A $1 trillion infrastructure law signed by President Joe Biden in 2021 includes $15 billion for airport project grants. The FAA is expected to soon issue a similar environmental approval to a massive $8.5 billion project at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport that includes a new Terminal 2. Delta's glittering 1.3 million-square foot, $4 billion Terminal C began flights this summer.

Roughly 1,000 fast food workers at San Francisco International Airport are striking, saying they are experiencing stagnant wages and chronic understaffing. Most fast food workers at the airport make $17.05 an hour, which has remained flat for three years, the union said. The SFO Airport Restaurant Employer Council, which manages the 84 restaurants for the airport, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Airport food and drinks have grown more expensive, which could lead to further disparity in menu prices compared to wages, as in the case of the San Francisco workers. The SFO strike is open-ended, meaning there is no planned end date.

A major airline union said Friday that it has enough support among JetBlue Airways' roughly 3,000 fleet service staff to seek a unionization vote, in the latest move to organize workers. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said it will file an application for a union vote with the National Mediation Board. A vote could create the third major work group at the New York-based airline to unionize. "The IAM has sufficient interest among JetBlue Fleet Service workers to conduct a union representation election," the union said in a statement. Most major airline workers are already largely represented by unions, though some carriers like JetBlue are less so than some competitors.

The Transportation Department on Wednesday proposed stricter rules on when airlines would have to compensate passengers for canceled or delayed flights, a move that follows a surge in traveler complaints after Covid-19 roiled air travel. Some Democratic lawmakers have called for better consumer protections for air travelers. Complaints about airline refunds accounted for 87% of the 102,560 complaints the DOT logged in 2020 and about 60% of the 49,958 complaints in 2021. For example, American, United and Delta, got rid of ticket change fees for standard economy tickets in 2020. And last week, Southwest, which didn't charge ticket change fees before the pandemic either, said the vouchers it issues will never expire.
