I predicted last weekend that the Democrats will find a way to jettison Joe Biden; that likelihood seems to fluctuate daily or even hourly, but for now my prediction stands. Because it is so obvious to me, I had long assumed the Democratic Party would consider it equally obvious. But it is no longer clear to me that the party’s elected officials actually share that assumption. But to the extent that goal conflicts with other, more mundane imperatives, more than a few Democrats seem to view beating Trump as a secondary objective. I wrote about this in the context of Biden’s “save democracy, vote Democrat” rhetoric before the 2022 midterms, but clearly the point merits new elaboration.

If current trends continue, Mr. Trump could rack up one of the most decisive presidential victories since 2008. The Biden campaign hoped to change this political dynamic by calling for a historic early debate in June. Of all the battleground states, Mr. Biden had been performing best in Wisconsin. What I am hearing from congressional Democrats about President Biden is this: He has done little to nothing to allay their fears. The caucus meetings House and Senate Democrats held this week were an airing of grievances and despair, but they didn’t chart a path forward. What they need is a process through which they can gather the information they need to make a final decision. There are two main camps among congressional Democrats. Representative Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is among those who told his colleagues that Biden should step aside.
