A fourth university has forfeited its women’s volleyball match against San José State University following controversy over the gender identity of one of the team’s players. In the lawsuit, Slusser says the teammate who was the subject of the media coverage told her she was a trans woman. Tony Hoang, the executive director of Equality California, said that in forfeiting matches against SJSU, school administrators are harming all students involved. The Republican governors of both Utah and Idaho publicly supported decisions by Southern Utah University, Utah State University and Boise State University to cancel their matches against SJSU. Previously, trans athletes’ participation in sports was regulated by state sports associations, school districts and, in college athletics, the NCAA.

At least 49 people have died and dozens of others are missing in western North Carolina, which includes hard-hit Asheville. Some of the victims of Hurricane Helene are cut off from the outside world. Two local television stations and two FM radio stations are also out of service in North Carolina, the FCC said. Internet providers often have disaster contingency plans, such as keeping backup generators and fuel on hand to keep service going during power outages. Companies that track internet connectivity say much of western North Carolina’s broadband internet speeds are slow and, in some areas, nonexistent. NetBlocks, a U.K. company built to track global internet censorship, said some cities and towns in the area expect severe to full broadband outages.

A lawyer for the Kentucky sheriff accused of fatally shooting a judge in his chambers announced the law enforcement official’s retirement Monday after the state’s governor threatened to remove him from office. “Rather, Sheriff Stines has made this decision to allow for a successor to continue to protect his beloved constituents while he addresses the legal process ahead of him,” said the lawyer, Jeremy Bartley. Andy Beshear told Stines he had until Friday to resign or face removal proceedings under a state law that allows governors to fire peace officers for neglect. A spokesman for the Kentucky State Police, which is investigating the shooting, has said the shooting occurred after an argument. In a filing, a lawyer for Stines said that he was protected from being sued in connection with the allegations because of his position as an elected official and law enforcement officer.

2 Georgia to fourth-ranked Alabama might have acted as a de facto knockout game. The College Football Playoff’s expansion to 12 teams this season has left more margin for error for teams with national title ambitions that play in the sport’s four most powerful conferences. But that doesn’t mean the stakes are necessarily lower for Saturday’s meeting of undefeated Southeastern Conference rivals (7:30 p.m. But Georgia also has imperfections, such as its 74th-ranked third-down conversion rate, its 81st-ranked third-down defense and its numerous penalties. Read previewFour senators on Wednesday released a bipartisan report chronicling the myriad failures by the Secret Service that preceded an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump in July. The interim report from the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said that the Secret Service failed to "clearly define responsibilities" during the fateful rally. AdvertisementThe report also said Secret Service personnel responsible for planning coverage of the July 13 event "denied that they were individually responsible for planning or security failures and deflected blame." The staff report states that the Secret Service was told that local police had seen a "suspicious person with a rangefinder" near the building at about 5:45 p.m.By 5:52 p.m., at least eight Secret Service personnel had been told about the suspicious person, according to the report. But that information was not relayed to key Secret Service personnel who were interviewed by Senate investigators. The Senate report comes just days after the Secret Service released a five-page document summarizing the key conclusions of a yet-to-be-finalized Secret Service report on what went wrong, and ahead of a Thursday hearing that will be held by a bipartisan House task force investigating the shooting. "This was the result of multiple human failures of the Secret Service," said Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the top Republican on the panel. Investigators found that many of the people in charge denied that they had responsibility for planning or security failures, and deflected blame. Democrats and Republicans have disagreed on whether to give the Secret Service more money in the wake of its failures.

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman said Tuesday she thought her colleagues should have taken a more measured approach to last week’s half percentage point interest rate cut as she worries that inflation could reignite. In explaining her rationale, Bowman said the half percentage point, or 50 basis point, reduction posed a number of risks to the Fed’s twin goals of achieving low inflation and full employment. Though Bowman favored a reduction, she preferred the Fed lower by a quarter percentage point, more in line with the traditional moves at the central bank. In recent statements, Fed officials have cited easing inflation and a softening labor market as justification for the cut. At last week’s meeting, individual policymakers indicated they expect another half percentage point in cuts this year and another full point in 2025.
