ASHEVILLE, N.C. — When schools here reopen for the first time since Hurricane Helene unleashed a frightening deluge on western North Carolina, teachers won’t simply pick up where they left off in their lesson plans. While all Asheville City Schools students and staff members have been accounted for, they are grieving the deaths of other members of their community. “We’re not going to be able to just jump right into academics,” Asheville City Schools chief of staff Kim Dechant said. The city has restored water for toilets and handwashing at all other district schools, Dechant said. And with schools being closed for over a month, teachers will inevitably have to account for students’ learning loss.

One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY has taken to calling the measure the “Parent Replacement Act.” The group argues that the measure would be used to strip rights from parents and push transgender rights for minors, in particular. The coalition's website includes no articles or other information about the ballot measure seeking to codify a right to abortion. Hochul’s office has helped lead the state’s Democratic Party to spend over $1 million to advertise in favor of the measure, including local ads, campaign yard signs and mailers.

Embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Monday that he's accepted the resignation of his deputy mayor for public safety, Philip Banks, the latest senior official to leave as the mayor fends off an indictment and calls to step down. All three Banks brothers have denied wrongdoing. An attorney for Philip Banks, Benjamin Brafman, said Monday that federal prosecutors had assured him his client was not a target of the investigation. In addition to seizing the phones of the three Banks brothers, federal investigators also took devices from the city's police commissioner, Edward Caban, and one of Adams' closest aides, Timothy Pearson. At a press briefing last month, Adams spoke of his close ties to the Banks brothers.

Trucking and other logistics companies are racing to get as many goods as possible out of ports before a potential strike. The vast port operations of New York and New Jersey stand to be most affected, with about 4,500 workers in the region. Kathy Hochul said that her state and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have been anticipating the strike but warned of potential impacts. Under that authority, Biden could seek a so-called 80-day "cooling-off period" that would force dockworkers to stay on the job. New York City Mayor Eric Adams will step into a Manhattan courtroom and into the history books on Friday when he is arraigned on federal corruption and bribery charges that could force him out of office. Adams is the first sitting New York City mayor to be indicted on criminal charges in the modern era. “This was a multiyear scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said Thursday. Adams' indictment capped two weeks of turmoil in his administration, a period during which Banks, the city’s police commissioner, and the city's top lawyer, have announced their resignations. “You could almost picture them trying to cobble this together and try to tell a story so that they could say, ‘corruption, corruption’ at a press conference,” Spiro said at a Thursday press conference.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams insisted that he will remain in office despite his indictment. However, the city's charter outlines two ways Adams could be forcibly removed from his position. The committee includes five members: New York City's top attorney, the comptroller, the City Council speaker, the borough president serving the longest consecutive term, and a deputy mayor that the mayor selects, the city charter states. If Adams is removed from office or resigns, Jumaane Williams, the city's public advocate, would serve as acting mayor.
