ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers are back in the World Series for the first time since twice being within one strike of winning the 2011 title. And these Rangers won't even be the first team to play in a World Series at Globe Life Field, their retractable-roof stadium that opened in 2020. Freese led off the 11th with a game-ending homer, and the Cards won Game 7 the following night. That 2016 division title is still the last for the Rangers, one of six big league teams without a World Series title. “I came here to get to the World Series, but I came here to win it.”___

The defending World Series champion Astros were again felled by a subpar start from Framber Valdez and lackluster play at home. But the Rangers got some insurance from an RBI double by Garver with one out in the eighth off Abreu. Josh Sborz walked Alex Bregman to start the Houston eighth and struck out Alvarez before José Abreu singled with one out. Abreu singled on a grounder to right field before Tucker grounded into a force out that left him out at second and sent Alvarez to third. Heim, who had a career-high 18 home runs in the regular season, also homered off Valdez in Game 2 of this series.

Like him, I’m an Arab, Muslim and American — an amalgam of identities that conjures up “pariah” in the world we live in. What does it mean for a mother who escaped war for the safety of an American suburb? This existential ballad of being Arab or Muslim in America is far more onerous, far more absurd. Wadea’s death foreshadows that these figures may spike again, and descend on the heads of Arab and Muslim Americans shadowed by suspicion.

The youthful playoff infusion is the continuation of one of the best regular seasons for rookie hitters in MLB history. Five rookies — Carter, Carroll, Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson and Minnesota’s Royce Lewis and Edouard Julien — had OPS totals over 1.000, and Jung wasn’t far behind at .947. “I’d say adrenaline-wise, it’s probably felt about the same as the regular season, maybe a tiny bit more,” Carroll said. It's probably no coincidence that the Rangers started to struggle around the time he got hurt — the third baseman hit 23 homers during the regular season. Texas had a 73-49 record in games he played during the regular season and a 17-23 mark when he didn't.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jose Altuve homered, Cristian Javier worked into the sixth inning of another solid postseason start and the Houston Astros beat the Texas Rangers 8-5 on Wednesday night, closing to 2-1 in the AL Championship Series. Javier set a franchise record for the defending champion Astros by extending his postseason scoreless streak to 20 1/3 innings. He threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings six days later, on Sept. 12 at Toronto, before going on the injured list because of the shoulder strain. LOT OF ZEROESJavier's 20 1/3 innings passed Joe Niekro's 18 innings for the longest scoreless streak in Astros history, for starters or relievers. HOUSTON (AP) — Jonah Heim homered, Nathan Eovaldi pitched six effective innings and the Texas Rangers beat Framber Valdez and Houston Astros 5-4 on Monday for a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series. They swept the Rays in the Wild Card Series and the Orioles in the Division Series, and then posted a 2-0 win at Houston in the ALCS opener. The Astros, who went 39-42 at home in the regular season, continued to struggle at Minute Maid Park. Montgomery pitched five-hit ball over 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Taveras provided a two-run lead with his solo homer in the fifth. The playoff-tested Astros, in the ALCS for a seventh straight year, had a tough time getting anything going against Montgomery. Jose Leclerc struck out one in a perfect ninth for the save and the Rangers' second shutout of the playoff. Now the Rangers get another chance at the Astros when they meet for the first time in the playoffs in a Texas-sized showdown with a trip to the World Series on the line starting Sunday night in Houston. The Astros completed the regular season matchup against the Rangers with a three-game sweep at the beginning of September. Seoul/Hong Kong CNN —When Hwang Ji-sun, 52, first joined the assembly line at South Korean carmaker Hyundai 22 years ago, women like her had it tough. A wider problemDespite the incremental improvements, South Korea still has widespread problems of gender-based exclusion and low pay, researchers say. Gita Gopinath, first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has proposed South Korea adopt new measures to help keep women in the workforce. Making childcare more affordable, lowering the number of working hours or allowing more flexible arrangements is key, she told a South Korean forum last September. In a culturally conservative society like South Korea, much more needs to be done to change perceptions about women in male-dominated professions, according to Hwang.

Scientists have long thought Earth's inner core is like a huge solid metal ball. It could help explain why Earth's magnetic field is so weird.
