Twenty-three Nobel Prize-winning economists endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump in a joint letter released Wednesday. The nearly two dozen economists said Trump's economic agenda, which includes hardline tariff proposals and a slate of aggressive tax cuts, would "lead to higher prices, larger deficits, and greater inequality." Joseph Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize for his market economics research in 2001, spearheaded the joint endorsement among his fellow laureates. Stiglitz led a similar effort to endorse President Joe Biden in June, publishing a letter signed by 16 Nobel laureates. That came just two days before the fateful presidential debate that ultimately derailed the president's reelection bid.

Passengers are suing Royal Caribbean after a cabin attendant was found guilty of hidden recordings. AdvertisementPassengers are suing the Royal Caribbean cruise line after a cabin attendant was sentenced to 30 years in prison for secretly recording adults and children in states of undress with hidden cameras. In one lawsuit, a Hawaii-based passenger, identified as Jane Doe, is seeking $75,000 in damages from Royal Caribbean. It argues that Royal Caribbean should have foreseen the risk of sexual assault, given the prevalence of such incidents on ships. Royal Caribbean Cruises stock closed at $203.35 on Tuesday, up 1.72%, and close to the 52-week-high reached last Thursday.

The reason why Treasury yields are rising isn't complicated — it's because investors are demanding more compensation for the risk they are taking when buying government debt. From a market standpoint, the burst higher in Treasury yields can be told through the "term premium." The moves higher in the term premium closely replicate those of other Treasury yields. However, traders are growing less certain about December, even though the Fed last month penciled in another 50 basis points in cuts this year. "The rise in term premium is the result of higher real interest rates and stronger economic data.

South Korea says 1,500 North Korean troops have been sent to aid Russia in its war in Ukraine. They also said that North Korean troops could find themselves little more than cannon fodder. Other experts said North Korean troops would experience the roughest end of Russia's notoriously brutal military hierarchy, which marks some as expendable. "The grim reality is that the North Korean troops will likely simply be cannon fodder for Russia," said Edward Howell, a North Korea expert at the University of Oxford. The Many Links Between Project 2025 and Trump’s WorldFormer president Donald J. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he had nothing to do with Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s conservative policy initiative to reshape the federal government. But Project 2025 has numerous ties to Mr. Trump and his campaign, a New York Times analysis has found. L. ZorcJump to the full list of authors, editors and contributorsSpokespeople for Project 2025 have denied that they are advocates for any particular candidate, and Project 2025 has no official ties to the Trump campaign. To limit the appearance of connection, Mr. Trump’s transition team has been excluding prominent people linked to Project 2025 from its preparations. Project 2025 additionally calls for the dismantling of the federal Education Department, which Mr. Trump has also pledged to do.

Ron DeSantis penned the cease-and-desist letters sent by Florida’s health department threatening to criminally prosecute local TV stations over their airing of an abortion rights ad, the department’s former general counsel said in court documents. “I did not draft the letters or participate in any discussions about the letters prior to October 3,” Wilson wrote. Spokespersons for DeSantis and the Florida Department of Health did not immediately respond to CNN requests for comment. Wilson’s allegations come after local TV stations began airing an ad by Floridians Protecting Freedom, the group behind the state’s “Yes on 4 Campaign,” promoting a ballot measure seeking to overturn the state’s six-week abortion ban by enshrining abortion rights in the state’s constitution. Local TV stations also received support from FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, who said earlier this month that “threats against broadcast stations for airing content that conflicts with the government’s views are dangerous and undermine the fundamental principle of free speech.”

Messi came on as a substitute in the second half and stole the show with a rapid-fire hat-trick, netting three goals between the 78th and 89th minute. This made the 37-year-old the all-time leading goal scorer in the club’s short history – his 33 goals take him past teammate Leonardo Campana’s current total of 32, according to the team. The win – the squad’s 22nd of the season – pushed Miami’s point total to 74, breaking the MLS record of 73 set by the Revolution in 2021, per the club. “For the team, it’s a boost of confidence, more confidence,” said head coach Gerardo Martino postgame, via Inter Miami. That’s because cocoa prices have more than doubled since the start of the year and have remained at record highs, according to Wells Fargo data shared with CNN. The surging prices have caused grief for confectioners during prime chocolate sales seasons like Valentine’s Day and Easter. The company’s president, Michele Buck, said in a call in August with analysts that cocoa prices are “not sustainable,” and pointed toward higher prices. Though hope is on the horizon, experts project cocoa prices will remain high until at least September 2025. A federal judge on Thursday issued a temporary restraining order against Florida’s surgeon general, the latest development in a legal battle over a television ad supporting the state’s abortion rights ballot measure. Earlier this month, the Florida Department of Health sent cease-and-desist letters to multiple broadcast stations that had aired the ad, threatening criminal charges against stations that didn’t stop playing it. The restraining order against Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo lasts through Oct. 29. Even before the decision, Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel had denounced the cease-and-desist letters as a violation of the First Amendment. North Korea got a good deal by sending its officials to help Russia's Ukraine war, experts said. In a discussion on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: "North Korea has, in fact, entered the war," per state-run outlet United24 Media. CNN —A record number of early votes have been cast in Georgia on Tuesday as residents headed to the polls in a critical battleground state that is grappling with the fallout from Hurricane Helene and controversial election administration changes that have spurred a flurry of lawsuits. More than 300,000 ballots were cast Tuesday, Gabe Sterling of the Georgia secretary of state’s office said on X. Georgia election officials say absentee ballots went out by the US Postal Service as scheduled and were not impacted by the storm. It’s also possible that the state could continue to see high numbers of early votes given that Georgia law now mandates two Saturdays of early voting and allows for two Sundays of early voting if a county desires. Legal fights continueMeanwhile, state judges are scrutinizing a number of new rules passed by the Trump-backed Republican majority on the State Election Board that Democrats warn could inject post-election “chaos” into the Georgia.

The power needs of data centers will temporarily prolong the demand for coal, maintaining the reliability of the electric grid but delaying the nation's decarbonization goals, according to Moody's Ratings. The electricity demand from data centers could more than double to 35 gigawatts by 2030 compared to 17 gigawatts in 2022, according to a Moody's report published Monday. "It can be cost effective for them to supply coal to those power plants, and those power plants can, in turn, meet the incremental demand coming in from the new data centers," Sama said. The benefit to U.S. coal producers, however, will be temporary as data center developers transition to cleaner sources of power, according to Moody's. But sustained coal demand in the U.S. due to data centers could briefly lift prices before coal resumes its decline after a few years, according to Moody's.
