Iran acknowledges drone shipments to Russia before Ukraine war
  + stars: | 2022-11-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said a "small number" of drones had been supplied to Russia a few months before Moscow's forces invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. In Iran's most detailed response to date on the drones, Amirabdollahian denied Tehran was continuing to supply drones to Moscow. "The drone part is true and we provided Russia a small number of drones months before the Ukraine war," he said. Russia denies its forces have used Iranian drones to attack Ukraine. The Iranian foreign minister repeated that Tehran would "not remain indifferent" if it were proven that Russia had used Iranian drones in the war against Ukraine.
That would be a longer and shallower economic contraction than the ones that followed the COVID-19 lockdowns and the global financial crisis of 2007-09. But the backdrop of high inflation this time is limiting the policy options available to the government. Hunt has warned of tough decisions on taxes and spending as he prepares to announce the new government's first budget programme on Nov. 17. "This is not a recession we should be offsetting with lower interest rates and expansionary fiscal policy," Chadha said. JERUSALEM, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Israel Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Thursday congratulated Benjamin Netanyahu on his election win as final results confirmed the former premier's triumphant comeback at the head of a solidly right-wing alliance. This time Netanyahu, the dominant Israeli politician of his generation, won a clear parliamentary majority, boosted by ultranationalist and religious parties. Netanyahu still has to be officially tasked by the president with forming a government, a process that could take weeks. BEIRUT, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Lebanon's finance minister Youssef Khalil said on Friday that the burden of repaying depositors whose funds have been frozen by the economic crisis should not fall solely on the government. Lebanon's financial system is estimated to have suffered from $72 billion in losses, but a recovery plan laying out how those funds would be recovered has yet to be finalised. "The state cannot finance whatever and however is asked of it, and the recovery of deposits should not come exclusively from its own pocket," Khalil told reporters. LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Following are reactions from senior figures around the world to the resignation of Liz Truss, who said on Thursday that she was resigning as Britain's prime minister just six weeks after she was appointed. I thank Prime Minister Liz Truss for her partnership on a range of issues including holding Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine. RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESWOMAN MARIA ZAKHAROVA"Britain has never known such a .... prime minister. LONDON MAYOR SADIQ KHAN, SPEAKING IN BUENOS AIRES"This morning I heard the news that my political opponent, the Conservative Prime Minister of the UK, has resigned. Had I known that organising the summit could lead to the resignation of the UK PM I'd have organised it sooner."
He said Russia acknowledged that the incident took place in international airspace, adding that patrols have now resumed, and British aircraft were now being accompanied by fighter aircraft escorts. Wallace visited Washington earlier this week, prompting speculation as to whether a specific threat or piece of intelligence had prompted the trip. Ukraine has retaken territory in eastern Ukraine, leading President Vladimir Putin to order a partial Russian mobilisation and also step up nuclear rhetoric. Wallace repeated that there would be "severe consequences" for Russia if it used nuclear weapons in Ukraine, adding that he discussed Ukraine's battlefield successes and the possible Russian response to them on the trip. He emphasised that the incident with the Russian fighter and the UK "Rivet Joint" plane highlighted the risks of miscalculation in interacting with Russia.
"I think it is a shambles and a disgrace," he said, in a video that a couple of other Conservative lawmakers tweeted in agreement. "I have made a mistake, I accept responsibility, I resign," she said in a letter to the prime minister. As a replacement, Truss appointed former minister Grant Shapps, who said recently that Truss faced a massive battle to survive. He also failed to offer a ringing endorsement of the prime minister. "I have been very clear that I am sorry, and I have made mistakes," Truss told jeering opposition lawmakers in parliament.
NICOSIA, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The euro zone economy may be facing a recession but rate hikes remain absolutely necessary because persistently high inflation is damaging the economy and stability, European Central Bank policymaker Gabriel Makhlouf said on Tuesday. "The euro area is facing a difficult combination of high inflation and low economic growth, including the possibility of a technical recession," Makhlouf, Ireland's central bank governor said in Cyprus. "History teaches us that these issues will only be exacerbated if we delay action and raising interest rates is absolutely necessary as persistent inflation is damaging to macroeconomic stability." Swiss considering wider EU sanctions on Iran over Amini death
  + stars: | 2022-10-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
ZURICH, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Switzerland is considering whether to adopt the strengthened European Union sanctions against Iran following Teheran's crackdown against demonstrators outraged by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (WBF) said it had noted the EU had extended sanctions to a further 11 individuals and four organisations in connections with the death of Amini and the reaction to the demonstrations. No time frame was given before Switzerland makes its decision, with the WBF saying it would examine the EU sanctions. A decision could be made by either Economic Affairs Minister Guy Parmelin alone or together with the Swiss cabinet. Neutral Switzerland has already adopted some U.N. and EU sanctions against Iran imposed over the country's nuclear activities and human rights violations.
Eleven French nuclear sites affected by strike, union says
  + stars: | 2022-10-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Companies Electricite de France SA FollowPARIS, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Strikes have affected 11 French nuclear power plants, an FNME-CGT power union representative said on Tuesday, delaying maintenance at 17 different reactors. Power production was also reduced by 1.8 gigawatts (GW) at three other nuclear reactors, data from operator EDF (EDF.PA) showed. Members of FNME-CGT have been staging rolling strikes at French nuclear power plants for several weeks over wages, heightening the risk of power supply shortages as the French utility struggles to get enough reactors back online for winter. Maintenance operations are continuing on the reactors that are currently shutdown despite the strikes, an EDF spokesperson said on Monday. The strike is part of a general strike on Tuesday that has affected train traffic, schools and other sectors.
Euro zone industry output up in August much more than expected
  + stars: | 2022-10-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
BRUSSELS, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Euro zone industrial production soared in August far beyond expectations as manufacturers boosted investment despite fears of an upcoming recession, official estimates showed on Wednesday. The European Union's statistics office Eurostat said industrial production in the 19 countries sharing the euro increased 1.5% month-on-month in August for a 2.5% year-on-year rise. Economists polled by Reuters had expected much more modest increases of 0.6% on the month and 1.2% year-on-year, after production fell in July. "All the evidence suggests that euro zone industry is heading for a significant contraction in the coming months," said Andrew Kenningham, chief Europe economist at Capital Economics, a London-based research outfit. Among the bloc's largest economies, France's industrial production rose 2.5% on the month, Italy's was up by 2.3%, whereas output declined in Germany by 0.5%.

BUDAPEST, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Hungary should prepare for a prolonged war in neighbouring Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Monday, sharply criticising European Union sanctions imposed on Russia which he said have "backfired", driving up energy prices. Orban, long at odds with the EU over some of his policies seen in Brussels as anti-democratic, urged a ceasefire to end the war and said the sanctions against Russia were dealing a blow to Europe's economy. "We can safely say that as a result of the sanctions, European people have become poorer, while Russia has not fallen to its knees," Orban said. "This weapon has backfired, with the sanctions Europe has shot itself in the foot." Orban, whose government is in talks with the European Commission to secure billions of euros in EU funds blocked over rule-of-law concerns, said his government would launch a "national consultation" asking Hungarians about sanctions.
When Russian troops withdrew from the town on Sept. 9 and 10, he wept with joy as he and other detainees were suddenly set free. Russia has consistently denied its troops have committed war crimes since its troops invaded Ukraine in February. On Monday, the Kremlin rejected allegations of such abuses in Kharkiv region, where Izium is located, as a "lie". A grave of 17 Ukrainian soldiers was also found. One of the Russian soldiers did surreptitiously give him water without the others seeing, he said, and he was eventually released by his jailors - and found by passers-by.

Sept 8 (Reuters) - Airbus (AIR.PA) on Thursday confirmed it had revoked all remaining A350 orders from Qatar Airways, raising the stakes in a safety and contractual dispute with the Gulf carrier. "Airbus confirms that it has removed 19 Qatar Airways A350s from the backlog," a spokesperson said. Qatar Airways had no immediate comment. Airbus said it had booked orders for 843 jets between January and August, or a net total of 637 after cancellations including routine order reversals by customers and the aircraft withheld from Qatar by Airbus. It delivered 382 jets over the same period, or a net total of 380 after deducting two A350 aircraft built for Aeroflot but impossible to deliver due to sanctions.
