The judge overseeing X's lawsuit against advertisers has recused himself following a news report that showed he owned shares of Tesla . In a recusal notice dated Aug. 13, U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor in Texas backed out of X's case against the World Federation of Advertisers, which was filed last week. X, formerly known as Twitter, is owned by Elon Musk, who is also the CEO and largest shareholder in Tesla. On Monday, NPR reported that O'Connor had owned shares of Tesla in 2022, the date of his last available disclosure, posing a potential conflict of interest. In X's lawsuit, the company accused a number of advertisers of engaging in antitrust behavior when they stopped ad campaigns on the site.

But to aviation experts around the world who watched the videos showing the 89-foot plane spinning slowly as it plummeted before crashing almost directly on its belly, the question of what had happened was simple to answer: The plane had stalled. When Eric Schmidt was the chief executive of Google in the mid-2000s, he dated Marcy Simon, a New York-based public relations executive. Mr. Schmidt and Ms. Simon were seen together on the French Riviera, at tech conferences and on Fire Island, where she owned a beach house. When a large yellow diamond ring was spotted on Ms. Simon’s finger, some speculated in the media that Mr. Schmidt might divorce his wife and marry Ms. Simon. But Mr. Schmidt moved on to other girlfriends. There have been contracts, amended contracts, arbitrations, lawsuits and the platoon of advisers that inevitably go along with all that.

Patrol cars used by the New York Police Department will soon bear a new motto, news that made me raise an eyebrow. Three important words — “Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect” — have been on the side of patrol cars since 1996, when this New York City kid was just 9 years old. And the N.Y.P.D.’s decision to drop the old motto — born in an era when the department was at least attempting to solicit the good will of a skeptical public — feels notable. It reminded me of a weird episode at the Police Department earlier this year when the department and several members of the top brass began using their official N.Y.P.D. social media accounts to attack a city councilwoman, a political activist and journalists.
